Chapter 25: Let’s Keep Him
Chapter 25: Let’s Keep Him
It was early in the morning when Dimitri woke up. The Sun hadn’t fully come out yet. Though he had something to eat last night, he felt hungry. It was the kind of hunger that wouldn’t go away so easily.
Without making any sounds, he carefully stepped out of the room and walked down the hall. He didn’t know where anything was. He could see a garden out the window, and there were a few trees there. Maybe he could have some fruit, he thought.
He was too nervous to ask anyone. He didn’t want to offend anyone and get kicked out. This was the first time in a while he slept peacefully. He knew it would be selfish of him, but he wanted to stay here... Would it be too much to wish for?
Around the same time the Marquess woke up. He had a good night’s sleep after a very long time. He was able to get closer to his children and attempted to make up for the time lost, it felt like a burden was off his shoulders.
What he didn’t count on was his children committing crimes in the dead of the night, and their ringleader being his youngest child! Ignorance is bliss... But that bliss did not last too long.
He went to the garden, he actually wanted to sit on the swing and watch the sunrise just like he did when his wife was still alive. He didn’t know there would be an unknown boy there.
’Was he a servant’s child?’ He thought. His doubts were reasonable enough.
The servants had their own quarters and school where their children received basic education. It was unusual for them to bring their kids over here, but it wasn’t fully impossible.
He watched as the young boy jumped and tried to reach for the apple that hung near him.
Perhaps because the boy had blond hair, it reminded him of his sons. He instinctively went over to help the boy get the apple he wanted.
Dimitri immediately bit into the apple, he didn’t think of saying thanks, he was too hungry. Only after taking a few bites, he realised that the man was just looking at him. He wiped his mouth and thanked him immediately.
Manners were not something that was taught to him, he would’ve forgotten to thank him if he had left.
"What’s your name?" The Marquess asked gently. Seeing the boy eat so eagerly made it clear that he was starving. He started to think of possibilities. He certainly wasn’t underpaying his servants! Then why was this child starving?
Was there abuse? Or maybe young boys simply have a great apetite.
Dimitri looked up and gulped. Did he do something wrong? Was he going to get kicked out?
"I’m sorry. I won’t do it again, I promise." He handed over the apple with a bit of reluctance.
The Marquess frowned. Did he look like a bad adult who would reprimand kids for taking a fruit? It was quite a hit to his self-esteem. He knew he was a handsome man, children were always drawn to him.
"You can have the apple..." He gave a knowing look, he was asking for his name.
"Dimitri..."
"Don’t worry about it, Dimitri." The Marquess plucked another one and handed it over to the boy. He could tell that this child was only a few years older than his daughter.
’The people here are so kind!’ Dimitri could almost cry but he tried his best to stay strong.

"Wakey, wakey~"
"Huh-"
Adeline was sleeping soundly when a voice woke her up. She was too tired from last night so she went right back to sleep.
"WAKE UP!"
’What the hell?’
"Your dad discovered Dimitri! Go get him!"
Adeline didn’t get time to get mad at the Goddess. Maybe for the first time, she had a valid excuse to pop by out of nowhere and startle the life out of Adeline.
Adeline didn’t know where to begin searching for them. Maybe if the Goddess had given her the full information instead of being an annoyance...
"Be glad I’m helping you. They’re in the garden by the way."
Adeline rolled her eyes and went into the garden. The sun had just risen, it was still early in the morning, and all the servants started their tasks for the day. The maids were carrying around some bedsheets to clean when a small figure zoomed past them.
"What was that?"
"I don’t know..." The wide-eyed maids continued walking as if something weird didn’t just happen.
"Dad!"
Adeline ran up to him with all her might. From a distance, she could see that the two were interacting. There didn’t seem to be any tension between them though, that was good. Her cheeks turned incredibly red. As she approached them, her tiny legs slowed down.
’I need to *gasp* exercise more *wheeze*’
"Linny?"
Since the Marquess was dressed plainly, Dimitri didn’t think he was a noble. He just assumed he was a servant working in the manor. Now that he heard Adeline call him dad, he realised that this person was someone with a lot of power.
He tried to make himself scarce. He was just an ordinary boy, he felt intimidated being in the presence of someone with so much power, the power to dictate the fate of thousands.
"What are you doing here?" Adeline managed to ask between her gasps.
"You just missed the sunrise."
Adeline nodded but in her mind, she was thinking, ’What’s the plan? I just came here without thinking. What am I supposed to do?!’
She turned to look at Dimitri which caught her father’s attention.
"Right, where are your parents, Dimitri?"
"They... aren’t here."
Adeline was internally screaming. Her father just asked an orphan where his family was. ’DAD!’
The Marquess frowned after hearing his answer. What did he mean by ’They aren’t here?’
"Dad... So, I can explain. I brought him home, let’s keep him, okay?"
"..." Her father was rendered speechless.
Dimitri was on board with him being kept by Adeline.
This was the first time she brought home a guy in her two lifetimes.
