Chapter 26: Save them all
"Dad... So, I can explain. I brought him home, let’s keep him, okay?"
"..." Her father was rendered speechless.
Dimitri was on board with him being kept by Adeline.
This was the first time she brought home a guy in her two lifetimes.
In the study, he carefully listened to Adeline’s explanation. From discovering her powers to the task given to her by the Goddess to save Dimitri.
Immediately the strange boy in his home wasn’t his biggest issue. He didn’t have time to reprimand her for sneaking out at night... What should he do?
Anyone from the temple would be able to sense the healing powers on her, if she were to ever encounter them, many problems would arise. His daughter might be taken away from them.
The only good thing was that the temple didn’t let them go out and treat people, however rich or poor they had to come to them for treatment. The chances of Adeline having an encounter with them were rare.
The second thing he was concerned about was that the position of the Saintess was empty. She was prophesied to be the only one who could carry out the word of the Goddess.
If Adeline heard her voice, did that mean she was the Saintess? He needed some time to think.
"Are you mad at me, Dad?" She asked with wide eyes. She just got a new, amazing dad! She didn’t want to offend him so quickly!
He looked at his daughter standing innocently in front of him. She didn’t know any of the implications her powers brought. He wanted to keep it that way. He would never want her to think of herself as a burden or something that could endanger their House.
"No, Linny. You and your brothers must have been up late trying to carry out the word of the Goddess. You should rest. As for Dimitri, we can definitely house an additional child, don’t worry about it." How could he blame them?
He wasn’t exactly an ideal father, did he even have the right to be mad? He took a deep breath and put on a smile. He didn’t want his daughter to misunderstand him.
The worry on her father’s face didn’t escape her eyes. She wondered what bothered him. Sponsoring a child was something many of the noble houses had done, bringing in Dimitri wouldn’t be a problem. She was sure of that, otherwise she would have never brought him in.
’Maybe it’s because he’s a refuge?’ She thought to herself.
In the story, Edward is more of a villain. He wanted to monopolise Annora’s attention, and to do that he would go to any lengths. And those attempts would often end in Annora getting hurt.
The author didn’t care if he hurt many, but when it hurt Annora it would be a big deal and a serious plot point.
How he became a Male lead, Adeline didn’t understand. How many people liked him in the first place... Was the second biggest mystery! There was so much fan art about him it was infuriating!
Since he was nothing but a possessive, villainous man, not much is discussed about the Holy Temple and its inner workings. The author didn’t want people to hate him after all, she made sure to rarely mention all the dirty work he did.
It was summarised in a sentence, the Holy Temple is bad. Annora would be the one changing things with the help of the male leads.
Due to the lack of information, Adeline was unaware of the problems she had to face because of her healing powers. If she had known, she would have been cursing out the Goddess even more!
All she knew was that the Holy Temple was after healing powers, but her family should be strong enough to protect her, right?
As she approached her room she found Dimitri waiting for her. Although it was against the etiquette to let someone from the opposite gender enter her room, she didn’t care. He was just a young boy, it’s fine!
He looked nervous, his cheeks were flushed from stress.
"I- I have something to ask you."
Dimitri’s mind was filled with those two children. He promised... He promised he would help them. He knew he was asking for a lot. Adeline taking him in was more than he could ever ask for, but there was a sense of guilt that ate him up. If they woke up to his absence, they would be heartbroken. He couldn’t do that to them. He was prepared to do anything to repay Adeline if she saved them.
"Take a deep breath and tell me." Her kind smile seemed to calm him instantly.
He mustered up the courage to ask for a favour, he was in no position to ask favours but he had to try.
"Could you save two children? I promised I would protect them. I will work hard and provide for them but I’m not strong enough to get them here..." His head bowed.
Adeline blinked, that was it? It took her a second to understand his side, he was in a difficult position and unlike her, he couldn’t just snap her fingers and make it happen.
That realisation hit her harder than expected. She was in a position that could help so many people, and coupled with her healing powers she could do so much.
The Holy Temple wouldn’t help anyone unless huge amounts of money were involved, but she didn’t need money, she could help those poor refugees that no one had a second thought about.
When Dimitri was given a bath, the maids noticed his condition. So many wounds, scratches and bruises. When Adeline heard about it, she couldn’t help but cry.
Her body was that of a five-year-old’s, it gave an immediate reaction to the harrowing information she had just learnt. No child should ever experience that, and as someone who is privileged, she decided to make things right.
Being a bystander to all this would just be wrong of her. She might not be able to help everyone but she might be able to help some.
She placed her hands on her hips and smiled confidently, "We won’t be saving one or two Dimitri... We will be saving all of them!"
