Chapter 24: Thoughts
Chapter 24: Thoughts
All of this happened in a span of a few hours, meanwhile, the Marquess slept blissfully unaware of the fact that his children snuck out, knocked out a woman, escaped the guards and kidnapped a child!
Upon Alaric’s requests, most of the guards stayed quiet and didn’t alarm the Marquess. Of course, they didn’t want to wake up the Marquess and tell him his children brought back a stowaway. Still, it was just a way to delay the inevitable.
"Linny, who is this?!" The Marquess could not believe what he was seeing! Just what did his daughter do?!
"Linny, who is this boy?! You cannot cry your way out of this, young lady. Explain." He repeated with a louder voice.
’Damn it.’ Her cuteness isn’t working anymore! Her father is demanding answers, where should she even begin?
On the way home Dimitri and Adeline fell asleep. Dimitri’s head leaned on Alaric’s shoulders while Adeline made herself comfortable on Aaron’s lap. Eventually, Aaron fell asleep too, he leaned against the window of the carriage. The only one awake was Alaric. He was still processing what happened.
Adeline revealed that she had healing powers and roped him into rescuing this young boy. Rescuing him wasn’t on his mind, it was the least of his worries. The main problem was Adeline’s healing powers.
Such an incident never occurred before. No one discovered that they had healing powers later in life because the Holy Temple’s test had 100% accuracy.
The children of aristocracy born with healing powers are given away to the temple, if the families had the chance to establish a connection with the holy temple, they would obviously take it. Other than the royal family, the temple had the most influence over the empire.
If a child with healing powers was not taken in by them, they could see that their powers slowly dwindled, there was something the temple did to nourish these powers that others just didn’t know. That was why no one other than them was able to capitalise on it.
Alaric shook his head, giving up Adeline to the temple was not an option. Her discovering she had this power would cause waves in the empire, she was the only one who developed these powers later on. He figured his father would agree with his plan, and hide her powers until they dwindled.
But they were going to be very wrong about this, her power was given by the Goddess herself, and nothing can cause it to dwindle.
After coming home, Alaric ordered the maids to clean up Dimitri. Aaron woke up by now and followed his brother inside. Alaric carefully placed Adeline on her bed and closed the door.
"What do we tell father?" To say Aaron was stressed was an understatement. Alaric gently patted his head.
"You don’t have to worry about any of this, go to bed, Aaron. Sweet dreams."
Alaric went to check up on Dimitri. He couldn’t help but feel restless. He was dropped in an unfamiliar environment and the few people he was familiar with left him with strangers.
Eventually, he calmed down. He didn’t want to give them any more trouble so he silently let himself be washed.
Once he was cleaned and dressed, he looked absolutely adorable. Alaric couldn’t help but feel protective. He had blond hair just like Aaron, and his crimson eyes which were like that of a ferocious wolf finally relaxed.
"Um, sir?" Dimitri knew none of his saviours so he decided to be as respectful as possible. It was clear that they were part of the aristocracy. As much as he held some resentment towards the noble as a whole, he couldn’t simply hate the people who helped him.
"You can call me Alaric. I’ve prepared a room for you. We can talk in the morning." In the room, there was some porridge prepared. Adeline made sure to tell Alaric to prepare some food for him, god knows when he had his last meal.
The warm bath and food made Dimitri feel much better. He didn’t know what tomorrow brought but today, he wanted to experience this warmth to no extent.
Still, worry plagued his mind. What would happen to that woman from the orphanage, what would happen to those two kids who put their trust in him?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hey! Lady! Wake up!"
The owner who was knocked unconscious by Alaric was woken up by those drunk guards. They went in that direction but nothing turned up. By the time they got back, this woman was on the ground, flat on her face.
"Huh- What happened? Why am I here? Where are those kids?!"
"Kids? This lady sounds more drunk than I am. Ahahaha." Both of them burst into laughter. They now considered this woman crazy and decided to just leave.
"No! He hurt my face! I won’t let him go!"
"Lady, we don’t have time for dealing with crazy people. Go home."
She quickly touched her face to feel those wounds. Her hands had blood but there were no injuries on her face. She suddenly remembered that someone healed her.
"Stop!" She ran and tried to pull those guards back. At this point, she too started to believe she was insane.
"There was a girl, that girl healed me!"
The guards looked at each other and shoved her away, she fell straight to the ground.
"We should throw her in the mental asylum. She wants us to believe that someone from the Holy temple healed her and just left? Hahahaha."
Healing powers that could instantly heal you unlike medicine were a commodity. The Holy Temple was the only supplier of this commodity, knowing how greedy they were it was hard to believe they found it in their heart to treat someone for free.
Which priest would be roaming in this part of the town at such a time? They brushed her off once and for and left.
Anger boiled in her, and as usual, she took it out on the children...
