Chapter 23: Hope

"Hey! She won’t do that..." Alaric looked at her suspiciously, "Would she?"

Adeline was at a loss for words, just what was her stupid brother thinking? She wouldn’t kill someone! She was just a child!

A bright white glow emerged from her hands which immediately healed all of her scars. If there are no wounds, there is no crime. How was she going to get him arrested? Adeline smirked with satisfaction. The Goddess finally did one right thing.

It didn’t hit Alaric until they reached a dark alley what was happening.

’Why am I here? How did they convince me to come here??’

He looked at the two partners in crime next to him and frowned. He thought it would be an uneventful night after the ’eventful’ morning. But here he was, Aaron woke him up saying there was something wrong with Adeline.

He was so worried that something happened to her that he jumped off the bed and started to sprint!

They rushed to her room at once. He knew something was wrong when he saw her dressed in a black robe, her evil smile didn’t help. Why was she dressed like the Grim Reaper?

"She looks fine-" He couldn’t help but remark. Didn’t Aaron say that something was wrong?

He looked at Aaron who looked very guilty. He couldn’t meet his eyes and turned his face away. That was when he knew that some shenanigans were going on.

"Brother, look! I have powers!" She grinned. Something amazing happened to her and she just had to share it with everyone. See! Now she had powers too!

Adeline wouldn’t tell anyone outside her family about her powers. She would trust them with her life. Alaric didn’t know how dangerous her powers would turn out to be. He was delighted that she awakened her powers.

Five years of age isn’t too late for magic to awaken so he wasn’t too concerned. She was a Kendrick! She would gain her abilities sooner or later. He was ready to be a proud big brother when she brought forth a ball of white light.

The smile on his face quickly turned into a frown. This was... Healing powers... While Aaron didn’t know much of the implications, Alaric did. How did his sister get healing powers?! She never had them... They can’t just suddenly grow!

"This can’t be... Healing powers? Why? How?"

"But it is! I could prove it to you! No one is hurt right now though." She turned to look at Aaron with a knowing gaze.

He flinched immediately, was his sister going to hurt him to prove that she had healing powers? No, she wouldn’t do that. He had to tell himself that because he truly couldn’t trust his gremlin of a little sister.

"Let’s call father." He turned to leave to go wake his dad up but he was immediately stopped by Adeline.

"No! I- believe it or not, the Goddess came to me in a dream, and she instructed me to save a boy. I have to carry out this mission." That sounded believable right?

Somewhere up there, a Goddess sneezed, "What the hell? Is there pollen here? What kind of a Goddess has allergies?"

And that was how Alaric ended up being in a dark alley with these two troublemakers. Well, he was wrong, there was only one troublemaker, and the other was her lackey.

Once Adeline healed the cuts on the orphanage’s owner, Alaric swiftly knocked her out.

Dimitri seeing these people take care of his problem so fast didn’t make him trust them more. He was still sceptical, there was no free food in this world. He didn’t have anything to offer, or so he thought.

He wasn’t wrong in his way of thinking. Wind magic wasn’t something that was coveted. It was welcomed but not desired. Why would these people go out of their way to help him, was it because they were kind-hearted? He would like to believe that.

"So, is this him?" Alaric asked Adeline with doubt.

Adeline nodded with much energy.

Knowing that they came here specifically for him made him feel nervous. They wanted something for him...

Adeline could sense that something was wrong. His hand was holding hers the entire time but upon mentioning him he immediately let go.

"Would you believe me if I said that I don’t want to hurt you?" She reached and took his hand. His hands were dirty, well, his entire person was dirty. But that didn’t deter her. When she looked at him with those earnest eyes, he felt like he could believe her.

Why? They just met, but she brought some sense of comfort he was never used to. No one ever protected him like this... Not since the disaster anyway.

Alaric carried the young boy back to the carriage parked further away from this place. Dimitri felt embarrassed but Alaric insisted.

He could see that the boy was bruised up in a few places. He could guess that Dimitri didn’t eat anything for a while, he didn’t want him to exhaust himself.

Throughout the entire journey, he couldn’t help but sneak glances at Adeline. He felt ashamed to look at her so directly. She didn’t hide though, she kept staring at him with a big smile on her face that made him blush.

He quickly looked away, he would’ve covered his face but he felt like that would be even more embarrassing.

All of this happened in a span of a few hours, meanwhile, the Marquess slept blissfully unaware of the fact that his children snuck out, knocked out a woman, escaped the guards and kidnapped a child!

Upon Alaric’s requests, most of the guards stayed quiet and didn’t alarm the Marquess. Of course, they didn’t want to wake up the Marquess and tell him his children brought back a stowaway. Still, it was just a way to delay the inevitable.

"Linny, who is this?!" The Marquess could not believe what he was seeing! Just what did his daughter do?!
