Chapter 22: Powers

A few hours ago...

"Hello, Linny."

"Aah!"

All the maids turned to look at Adeline. She had to come up with a quick reason as to why she yelped out of nowhere.

"Sorry, my Lady, I will be gentler." The one combing her hair thought it was because of her.

"No, no. It is alright. I just want to sleep so you all should leave."

Once they left Adeline took a deep breath. ’This darned Goddess!’

"You’ll get used to me eventually, Linny."

"I don’t want to get used to it! And stop calling me Linny!"

The Goddess took deep offence to this, "Why not?!"

Adeline simply glared at the ceiling, of course, the glare was intended for the Goddess.

"Boo-hoo why do you hate me so much?"

Adeline wasn’t fazed by her crying. She doubted the Goddess actually cried.

"Stop with your crocodile tears. It’s good that you contacted me. I have a bone to pick with you. Didn’t you say I was the one you pulled into the story? So, how does Annora know about Dimitri’s situation?" It didn’t make sense. Adeline was worried this divine being was nothing but a liar, a scammer who intended to play her.

"Hmm? I know nothing of that. What I spoke is the truth. You’re the only one I pulled into the story."

Even if she was lying Adeline had no way of knowing. Either she could believe the Goddess or she couldn’t. Right now, she didn’t know what she should do.

Adeline was a ball of stress at this point. She frowned and covered her face with her hands to calm down.

"Stress isn’t good for a young child."

"Shut up, you’re the reason why I’m like this."

"..."

"You call yourself a Goddess but do you have any powers?"

"Of course! I can read minds."

Didn’t she say she just acquired this skill? Does that mean that she can acquire new skills?

"Reading minds is sort of a given. That’s a default skill of a Goddess or any divine being for that matter. You sound like a scammer, y’know?"

Adeline didn’t hear anything back from the Goddess for a while. The silence was almost eerie. Suddenly, Adeline found herself glowing.

’What is happening?!’

She was glowing so bright that it hurt to open her eyes. She quickly jumped down and hurried to close the curtains, she didn’t want to alarm anyone.

Adeline slightly levitated off the ground, she felt energy coursing through her veins.

"Hey! What is happening?"

"You owe me big time."

Once the glow faded she could finally feel the changes in her body. She felt more invigorated... Just what happened? Instinctively she managed to gather power in her hands. A ball of white light formed.

"I gave you the same powers as the heroine of the story. Now pray to me, child. I am a Goddess! Humph!"

Adeline’s jaw dropped. What?!

She had healing powers now? Healing powers were rare, the priests blessed the children when they were born and measured their divine powers. If they had divine powers, they were to be taken away to the Holy Temple, no questions asked. The Holy Temple cultivated these powers and considered them their property.

This arrangement seemed to take place when the Lunaria Empire was born. It was an agreement between the Holy Temple and the Royal Family. Babies with healing powers were very rarely born.

If they were born in the house of a civilian, they’d gladly take the money offered by the temple and give away the child. If they were born in the house of a noble, they could either bribe the temple and keep the child, or give it away.

Heirs are important for noble houses. But if the Holy Temple were to stake their claim on the child, they would give in for two important reasons. One, it was ordered by their Emperor. Two, this would be their chance for them to gain connections to the Holy Temple.

Although some people did protest against this arrangement it was never overturned.

How could the Emperor overturn this arrangement? With the growing rate of monster attacks, they are in need of healers. They will be sent to the bordering vassal states along with the imperial army to ensure their safety.

Although the Royal family didn’t like a power that could rival their influence... They had to endure for the sake of the Empire’s safety.

Adeline knew of these implications if she was discovered to have these healing powers she would be taken away. Why couldn’t she have fire powers like her brothers, or literally anything else?! Her powers were a ticking time bomb. She could never reveal it to anyone.

"Go on, thank me."

Still, Adeline appreciated the powers. It was still something, better than nothing. Although she was still slightly suspicious of this Goddess, she appreciated the help nonetheless.

"Thanks..."

"That didn’t sound too sincere. I’m a benevolent Goddess so I won’t hold it against you. Since I’m so kind and you’re so grateful. I decided to provide you with a snippet of information."

Adeline couldn’t help but frown at the change in the way she spoke. Was she mad that she said you don’t sound like a Goddess so she started to speak formally?

"Why do you sound so formal?"

"Hush, child. Now listen. I know that you want to get Dimitri on your side, so I shall extend my helping hand to you. He is about to face a difficult situation, go, rescue him and make him owe you a debt."

"..."

This Goddess... Had quite the personality.

Aaron was sleeping peacefully until a little gremlin slammed his door open.

"Wake up, Brother. We are going out."

He shivered after seeing Adeline’s evil smile. ’I want my sweet sister back!’

He was well aware that he had no authority as an older brother. She took him too casually. So he decided to wake up Alaric. If he was going down, Alaric was going down with him.
