Chapter 114: Found it!

When dawn broke, Adeline was already up. She set off towards the intelligence guild with a sense of urgency. Every moment counted, she needed to get her hands on that information and get evidence on that man!

When she reached the entrance, she was greeted by that very same man again. She was a VIP she didn’t have to keep saying the code. There was only one person in the entire continent with pink hair. And it was the boss’s daughter!

Looking around, the shop was empty as ever, she came across the sign again. A secret for a secret... But this time she stayed strong and was prepared. Even though the guilt nagged at her, repeating over and over again that she stole the position of Adeline...

She ignored it and kept her head high.

In the inner chamber, Adeline was handed a thick file containing Alice’s entire life story, including an assassination report. She felt a chill run down her spine.

She vigorously flipped through the pages, realising just how thorough and interconnected the guild’s intelligence network was. They even found the information about her death! The information the Duke struggled to keep a secret!

The report painted a detailed picture of Alice’s life and her ties to the Duke. She was a woman who had lived under the shadow of manipulation, tangled in a secret relationship with a powerful man who had ultimately betrayed her.

Although there wasn’t evidence that proved that the assassination was orchestrated by the Duke, it was given to her more like a statement. Which was understandable, he went through hell and back to keep things under wraps.

She wasn’t going to find the evidence that quickly.

The guild had also uncovered information on Alice’s property... A remote mansion the Duke had gifted her long ago. This estate, though old and seemingly forgotten, might still hold the secrets Alice had left behind.

Since her death, no one had lived there due to its isolated location and the high upkeep costs, which made it undesirable for most people. This remoteness had preserved the place as it was, a forgotten relic hiding long-buried truths.

This would be perfect for her to find out any clues or hidden items that could serve as evidence.

Adeline knew that Alice, sensing danger, might have hidden something important in that house... Perhaps proof of her relationship with the Duke. She wasn’t a naive lady, but she wasn’t strong enough to face the Duke head on.

For the sake of her son, she must have hidden something!

Unbeknownst to Adeline, the Duke had similar thoughts. He, too, was aware that Alice had hidden something in the house. He remembered signing a document when Everett was born... A birth certificate establishing him as the child’s father.

At the time, he had thought it prudent to have legal proof of his connection to Everett in case something happened to the Duchess. And by that, he thought of eliminating her completely and taking over the Duchy.

Without her hindering him, and with Everett being the heir, he could easily gain control over the Duchy. He would have proof of being his guardian. He wouldn’t have to worry about the vultures who would try to become his guardian and take over the estate.

He punched the wall in his room, he planned for everything! He planned and schemed and all for what?!

That document that could have helped secure his future could become the very proof that would threaten his life, his status, everything!

Fearing the birth certificate and other incriminating documents might still be there, he set out to retrieve them before anyone else could. The Duchess, those bratty children, he planned to destroy anyone who would come in his way.

Dimitri was not accompanying her at the moment, he was in the estate training. Without Everett glaring daggers at him every second of every day, he could finally practice in peace.

As Adeline arrived at the house, she was greeted by an eerie silence. Dust coated the floors, and the air was thick with a sense of abandonment. She coughed a few times, the place was just so dusty.

She began searching methodically, checking each room and examining hidden compartments, old cabinets, and forgotten corners. She started off with the master bedroom, this must have belonged to Alice!

But she found absolutely nothing there! Adeline felt frustrated. She was in the body of a child, there was only so much she could do before getting exhausted.

"Goddess! If you are hearing me, I could use a little help!"

There was no reply from her. Adeline sighed to herself and kept looking.

Annoyed at the goddess she was stomping her foot while she walked around. That was the only way she could vent her anger!

She went to the room next to the master bedroom, it was smaller and was decorated like a child’s room. ’Well, this must be Everett’s room." She didn’t know where that child went. Now was not the time to think about it.

She had to find something! As she stomped her way across the room, she fell!

"Aaah!!" Her leg went straight through the wooden floors, she got scratches all over her ankle! The wood was probably decaying, and that was why her stomping was enough to break it.

She carefully took her foot out and started to heal it. She didn’t want to contract any diseases! She looked down at the hole she created, the crooked edges led to a secret compartment

She seemed to have stumbled upon it, in there was a box. Adeline was surprised and happy! This must be it! This box must have contained the clue she needed!

She looked around her and realised it was all dusty, she did not want to sit anywhere there while she perused the contents of the box! Putting all her concentration on one point she imagined a comfortable chair.

And voila! There it was, a white glowing chair made of pure holy power, hopefully, this chair was more comfortable than the last one. She sat on it with her legs crossed and carefully opened the box.

There were a bunch of memorabilia, children’s toys and bibs, it was probably Everett’s. Adeline did not care about any of this. She needed clues! She dug out all the stuff in the box and finally, below everything, there was a piece of paper.

"This has to be it, I am begging on my knees... Metaphorically." She was not going to put her knees on the dusty floor!

Carefully she opened the paper, it was old and looked like it would tear easily. Father... Mother... Name... It was Everett’s birth certificate! And it was the Duke’s signature! She was sure of it!

When she stole letters from his study she saw his signature, this was it! This was all that she needed to bring him down! She clutched that piece of paper close to her heart and decided to deliver this to the Duchess immediately!

She didn’t tell the Duchess she was going out today, if she did, she would probably be forced to stay back for more etiquette lessons! She didn’t even take knights, if she did, the Duchess would have noticed!

Her companion was only one person, the carriage driver...

"So, you found it." A voice echoed from behind.
