Chapter 113: My Fight
Chapter 113: My Fight
His own wife who pushed him to the brink, and those children... Those damned children who came as guests but slowly tore down everything he worked hard to build. He will take revenge... This will not be the end of him.
The room felt heavy even after the Duke stormed out, slamming the door in a final act of defiance. The silence that followed was deafening. It was awkward and sad.
They were uncertain about where to go from here. They looked at each other, the one who felt most out of place was the assassin.
Everett was the first to break the silence. His gaze fell upon the assassin- his eyes a mixture of anger, sadness, and helplessness. He wanted to scream, he wanted to cry, and he knew that his father was the one behind all of this.
Behind his downfall and his mother’s death. But the man wasn’t without blame, he played an active role in his mother’s death. He was just as much of a sinner as his father. Why was he an assassin? Why did have to accept the mission and kill his mother?
His eyes flickered for a moment, the redness didn’t dissipate one bit, he narrowed his eyes before muttering, "I hope you die a miserable death." His voice cracked as he finally spoke, his words sharp and full of bitterness.
Without waiting for a response, Everett turned and fled from the hall. He ran towards the door to leave this estate he once thought would belong to him.
He was unable to endure the intensity of his emotions any longer. He needed to be away from there. He didn’t want any of it anymore. What was the point? It came at the cost of his mother’s life!
The assassin was left alone with his thoughts, he did not try to defend himself. Everett’s words cut deep, and he knew they were well-deserved.
None of the others intervened, as much as they were glad that the assassin chose redemption... His crimes would never be erased. The sorrow he brought to the victims and their families would never be erased.
He hung his head, his expression one of quiet resignation. Deep down, he understood that his actions had led him to this point, and he accepted the consequences. It was indeed his fault.
He closed his eyes, perhaps to shut out the disappointment in himself or to hide the shame he felt. He decided to leave the estate and turn himself in.
Knowing that his testimony alone would never be enough to convict the Duke. And with no evidence to back his claims, why would anyone believe the words of a hired killer? He didn’t expect redemption, but he felt the weight of his actions more than ever.
It would be best to leave and not waste anyone else’s time.
Once he was gone, the awkward silence filled the room once again. Dimitri couldn’t stay silent anymore. He knew it wasn’t his place, but he had to say something! It was too awkward!
"Without evidence of his crimes or his infidelity, how are we supposed to take him down?" Despite everything they had seen, there seemed to be no clear path forward. Was their sneaking around all for nought?
Adeline was lost in thought, carefully considering everything that had happened. She knew that bringing down the Duke would not be simple, especially without solid proof. She was holding onto the hope that the intelligence guild would find something.
One clue... Just any clue, some detail that would link the Duke to his crimes and expose him for what he truly was. It was the only lead they had as of now, she was hoping that it would be enough.
The Duchess, however, looked at the two of them with a determined expression, her eyes filled with a fierce resolve. She shook her head as if dismissing their concerns. "Do not worry, children," she said firmly.
She had taken the back seat for far too long, she couldn’t let two children take on the burden of finding proof. What kind of a Duchess would she be?
"This is my fight. I will not ask you to carry this burden." Her voice softened, but there was a strength to her words that made it clear she did not want to involve them further.
She was the Duchess of the East, and these children were her responsibility, she was going to be protecting them, not the other way around.
If anything were to happen to them, she knew she would never forgive herself.
Adeline, however, felt very differently, she was not going to back at all! She wasn’t here out of kindness or loyalty. Her main reason for helping the Duchess was to gain her favour, to create a bond that would make the Duchess indebted to her.
She needed this connection if she could take on the Holy Temple. She was so close, quitting now would be a waste of her previous efforts.
"I don’t intend to back out now, Your Grace. I still have one more lead, let’s see where that goes." She looked straight into the Duchess with much confidence. She crossed her arms to make sure her stance was clear.
The Duchess was taken aback by her confidence, she was so strong for a child! Or was it naivety? She shook her head and smiled, "You really are your father’s daughter."
Adeline smirked, she took pride in that compliment. She was indeed her father’s daughter, her head was held up high. She missed him so much at this moment. It also gave her the motivation to finish things off faster!
She wanted to go home! She wanted to meet her brothers and father! And maybe... The other male leads too! They’re slowly growing on her!
There was still the Anna problem left, his mother had just woken up and she didn’t know if it was the right time to tell them. They were so happy, she couldn’t bear to bring them down.
With the Duchess waking up, she was sure that Anna wouldn’t be able to sit still. There were servants planted in the estate, she must have gotten the information about her awakening.
But, the Duke was looking over the Duchess like a hawk, he had increased security until she recovered fully. Anna wouldn’t be able to do anything... For now.
Once she returns to her home, she would have to expose that person and get her kicked out once and for all.

"What? Adeline visited our intelligence guild?" The Marquess frowned, since it was Adeline, he got the information about where, when and what request she made.
Glancing at the information he sighed, "Women who went missing or pronounced dead five years ago and now information on a specific noblewoman. Just what is she doing?"
He knew exactly what she was doing, stirring up more trouble. He thought that sending Dimitri would be enough but seeing her shenanigans he decided to send some of his knights for protection.
He sent her to the Eastern Duchy to be safe! That was the only reason he chose that over the Northern Duchy, but trouble always followed his daughter.
