The Last King Of Darkness
Chapter 55 - 44 Betrayal

Chapter 55: Chapter 44 Betrayal

Karamon proudly replied, "That’s right, we killed them all, twelve Ungraded and one Mature Level, all by ourselves, very easily, without any pressure."

Egger humbly said on the surface, "No, no, actually there was a bit of pressure. The enemy was strong, especially that Mature Level crow. You have no idea how tough it was. I bet it wasn’t at Primary Rank, at least Middle Rank or High Rank."

Reslin frowned and said, "Stop boasting, everyone. In fact, we had a very tough time. I got some injuries, several companions have almost drained their Spiritual Energy, and we’ve nearly used up our supplies. From here on out, we can only rely on you guys."

Only then did the four of them show a hint of a smile.

The tall Captain said, "You need to get those wounds treated quickly; it would be bad if they got infected. We have a medic in our team; let him take a look at you."

A person in a blue robe, holding a crystal, approached, and waves of blue light spread from the crystal, clearly of extraordinary healing power.

Karamon grumbled, "I can do that too." But he still went over with the three others.

Rod’s heart finally settled, and the last bit of worry vanished without a trace.

Now that there were eight of them, the Guardian wouldn’t make a move.

As long as they took care of the Corrosive Material, today’s patrol mission would be essentially over, and he could properly sort through the spoils of battle.

Rod watched as Reslin and the others approached them. He was about to switch off the Eye of the Soul to conserve some Spiritual Energy when he suddenly noticed that the Spiritual Energy of the four opposite them boiled over, rapidly strengthening, even causing obvious pulsating waves.

Rod’s mind flashed; he understood instantly and shouted, "Watch out! They are the enemy!"

But it was too late. Karamon was struck directly in the back of the head by a heavy hammer and fell to the ground on the spot.

Reslin was impaled in the chest by a Thrusting Sword from the front.

Only Egger reacted quickly, turning into white smoke and taking to the air as two Great Swords aimed to chop him down.

The man in the blue robe sneered, flipped his hand, and the crystal was turned upside down. The blue waves instantly turned purple-black and shot out, swiftly enveloping the white smoke.

The white smoke struggled within the waves, but could not break free; he had no choice but to revert to his original form and fall from the sky, crashing heavily to the ground.

The man in the blue robe took a step forward, stepped on his face, turned the water into ropes that bound him, and sneered, "So much for the most promising ’White Smoke’ Egger, a student destined to stay behind."

Egger’s eyes reddened as he exclaimed indignantly, "You are Doomsday believers!"

The man in the blue robe laughed, "No, we are humanity’s Saviors. Doomsday believers are just the prejudiced terms you short-sighted maggots use for us."

The leader shouted, "Stop talking! Extract their Soul Traits!"

Bang!

An electrically fast figure flew in, kicking away the Spirit Gun that Rod had just half charged in his hands.

"Trash!"

The man seemed to detest Rod extremely, grabbed his neck and dragged him over.

Rod despaired. Apart from the Spirit Gun, he had no combat ability. He had only been at the academy for a little over ten days, and he had only been in contact with the mysterious power of Spiritual Energy for the same amount of time. With the fall of Reslin and the others, they had no hope; charging the weapon was just a desperate struggle as there was another Guardian who hadn’t made a move yet. They had no chance of turning the situation around.

But in the next moment, the situation changed again.

Rod clearly saw the Guardian above adjust his position, falling from the air. His figure was concealed in strange shadows, unnoticed by anyone.

His right hand flickered with a profound glow, plunging directly into the man’s crown.

Bang.

His entire head exploded, and the headless body fell straight to the ground.

Blood splattered over Rod’s face, and he stared blankly as the Guardian rushed forward to engage the other three in combat.

You weren’t with them after all?

After the shock passed, Rod quickly came to his senses.

If they weren’t together, then only one possibility remained—the Guardian must have known that the Doomsday believers were coming and used them as bait, aiming to capture all of these human traitors, becoming the oriole behind the mantis stalking the cicada.

Understanding this, a fire of anger inevitably arose in Rod’s chest.

"If that’s the case, why didn’t you tell us earlier?"

"Even if you were afraid of alerting the target, you could have launched an attack the moment they appeared, and we could have helped you fight."

"Why wait until we were ambushed and wiped out before taking action?"

Rod found it hard to understand, he quickly picked up his gun and ran to Reslin’s side, his chest had a hole, and blood gushed out, his face was pale, but thankfully there was still a breath of life.

Rod fumbled to bandage his wound, but he could not stop the bleeding.

Just as he was getting desperate, he suddenly heard Egger shout, "Rod, hurry, go save Karamon first, he needs to wake up to save us all!"

Rod looked back and saw Egger lying on the ground, firmly bound by purple-black coils.

It seemed these could restrict his Characteristic, preventing him from turning into smoke.

"How do I save him?"

Rod ran to Karamon, turned him over, and found his eyes tightly closed, his lips turning blue, breathing weak, already in a deep coma.

"In the second pocket on the left side of his belt, there’s Summoning Powder, it can awaken sleeping spirits."

Rod wasn’t sure which was the second pocket, so he just pulled everything out, a few boxes of rouge-like ointment, a few boxes of powders of different colors, some blue pills, and a bottle of orangey drink-like potion.

"The green box! Scoop out some powder and place it in front of his nose to sniff."

Rod couldn’t find anything to scoop with, so he just poured the whole box of green powder into Karamon’s nostrils.

Karamon almost immediately woke up.

He sneezed frantically, with tears and snot streaming down, he couldn’t even speak clearly.

"ACHOO! What’s happened to me... ACHOO, what happened, ACHOO, my head hurts so bad... ACHOO ACHOO PFFT PFFT!"

Egger, not bothering to blame Rod, shouted, "Karamon, hurry and save Reslin, he’s dying!"

"What?"

Karamon jumped up, and through tear-blurred eyes, he saw Reslin lying on the ground, bleeding profusely, and immediately ran over and fell on top of him, blue light surging from his hands, wrapping him in waves of healing water.

Reslin’s bleeding quickly stopped, his wounds rapidly healed, and his breathing gradually became stable.

Rod then felt a little relieved and turned to look at the battle ahead.

The Guardian had gained absolute advantage, seeming to possess some shadowy ability, moving swiftly through shadows to dodge enemy attacks.

The two Shadow Spears in his hands were relentless, striking like a fierce gale without a moment’s pause.

The three could not withstand the Guardian’s fierce attack and kept retreating.

With a metallic clang, the Guardian parried a Giant Sword, his figure slipping into shadow, the Thrusting Sword passing harmlessly through his body without inflicting any damage.

The other Shadow Spear tore through the purple-black waves, shattering the crystal in the robes’ hand.

Countless purple-black gases escaped from the broken crystal, and the bindings on Egger were released, he immediately leaped up and sprinted over, pulling out two potions to pour down Karamon’s throat in succession.

Meanwhile, Karamon’s hands had not left Reslin, thick blue light almost drowning him.

"Enough!" Egger shouted, "Your Spiritual Energy is running dry! Keep going and you’ll die!"

"But, but..." Karamon was in tears, he still couldn’t see anything, too much Awakening Powder made his soul feel like it was in an ice cellar, "I’m scared he’s dead."

His voice full of sobs, Egger said softly, "Relax, he won’t die, he’s already better."

Only then did Karamon let go, sitting on the ground, exhausted, constantly wiping at the unstoppable tears and snot.

With a voice filled with deep chill, Egger said, "Those Doomsday bastards, none of them will escape!"

Nothing was more infuriating than being betrayed by one’s own comrades, Egger no longer cared about any side effects, downed all his Recovery Potions, and was about to join the battle when another unexpected event occurred.
