Chapter 85: Mother knows best (1)

"We should take some of our flowers and plant them in Rafael’s garden. Just because men live there does not mean his manor should be dull without any color. He has not commented on the apple trees I had planted around the yard," said Beatrice.

"The boy is too busy to notice," River said, helping Beatrice to dig out the flowers she wanted to be removed.

"I still think we should tie him and trap him here so he could take time off from worrying about the kingdom. The next time I see the king, I am going to let him have it. Always sending my son around when there are plenty of other men to help this kingdom. I should just yell at all of them," Beatrice grumbled, angrily pulling out the weeds among her plants.

River kept quiet to avoid her anger turning to him. He needed to keep her far away from the king as possible to avoid going to war over her killing Tobias.

He looked at the bottom of her dress stained with wet mud. He had told her to sit back while he did what she wanted with a garden or to let a servant do it, but she wanted to do it herself. The poor weeds did not deserve to get pulled out with so much anger.

"We should invite him to dinner. I would even cook so- Why did you just frown, River?" Beatrice asked, tilting her head to get a better look at his face. "You have said many times that you like my cooking, did you not? Has it not improved over the years?"

"You should take a look at the tomatoes you’ve been growing," River replied, pointing at the almost red tomatoes to help change what they spoke about. He could stomach her food to not upset her, but he would not torture Rafael with it.

"Have you been lying to me about my cooking?" Beatrice asked. He had complimented her so many times that she took she was good at it.

Beatrice had never cooked a day in her life before she married River, but with him always away working, the least she could do was try cooking so that he would have something warm to eat when he returned home. She also cooked for herself and Rafael when River was away and they could not afford servants. She thought it would be nice for her to cook like the old days.

"You are mean," Beatrice said, scooping up mud and throwing it at River. "Fine, I will have the cook prepare something for us so you do not need to worry about eating my food. You’ve survived on it for so long so it couldn’t have been that bad."

"Mrs. Callahan."

Beatrice looked away from River to the butler who stood behind her. "Yes, Charles?"

"You have two guests. Rachel is here with her daughter Delilah. They say the matter is urgent about your son," said Charles.

"Is that so?" Beatrice said, flicking the mud off of her fingers. "I will be there shortly. I need to get changed before I have a trail of mud following me as I walk inside. Seat them in the drawing room and get them something to drink."

"What is the issue with them and Rafael? I hope it is not talking about marriage," River said since they had turned down the offer many times. He was tired of hearing how the two families could benefit from a marriage with Rafael and Delilah.

"It is not about marriage. I will tell you about it after I have spoken to the two of them. Our beautiful day of gardening has been interrupted. I will join you right after," Beatrice said, leaning forward to kiss his right cheek as she smeared mud on his left cheek. "I will need to pull out more weeds to get rid of my anger."

Beatrice got to her feet and dusted her hands onto the already messy dress. She was not in the mood to talk to Rachel like she would on other days, but she was curious to hear what the mother and daughter came to her for.

While Beatrice hurried to get dressed to not let her guests see her covered in mud, Delilah and Rachel impatiently sat in the drawing room.

Rachel could not believe the stories told to her of someone seeing Rafael carry Delilah out of his home over his shoulder. She did not believe it until she questioned Delilah and saw the panic in her eyes. Rachel wanted to strangle Delilah for once again going to Rafael’s home without telling her or her husband.

Rachel had the necessary steps for Delilah to get Rafael already planned out, but Delilah would not sit still and continued to ruin her plans. Now she had to take time out of her day to visit Beatrice. It took hours for her to calm her husband down and prevent him from going to Rafael to ask him what caused him to hold Delilah as he did.

Delilah was not some bag of vegetables for Rafael to hoist over his shoulder.

"How much longer must we wait?" Rachel questioned the butler. What was Beatrice doing that she could not come out to greet them right away? "It has been more than ten minutes since we arrived."

"The lady will be here shortly," Charles answered.

"I am sorry to have kept you waiting. I was in the garden with River when you came, and I didn’t want you to suffer the sight of me covered in mud," Beatrice said as she entered the drawing room. She placed her hands behind her back and shooed Charles away.

"Gardening. How wonderful," Rachel answered, trying to hide her disgust at the job a servant should be doing instead of a lady. "We came by unannounced, so it was only right that we give you time to get ready," Rachel said as she stood to greet Beatrice.

Beatrice forced a smile. "Then why does it sound like you were complaining to my butler when you showed up on short notice?" She chuckled. "I hope you liked the drinks he prepared. Now, why are you here?"

Beatrice sat on the opposite side of Rachel and Delilah.

"I don’t know if you have heard it yet, but yesterday, your son placed my daughter over his shoulder and threw her into her carriage. We have been friends for many years, and I just can’t understand why your son would treat my daughter so," said Rachel.

Beatrice smiled, amused by how much Rachel left out of what happened yesterday. She kept a good relationship with Rafael’s butler so that she would receive messages when there was trouble. Rafael would not visit to tell her about Delilah and look to deal with this duo, but this was a battle Beatrice would fight for him.

"And what did Delilah do that led up to that point?" Beatrice asked, turning her attention to Delilah, who wanted to be anywhere but here. She loved Delilah, but not more than her own son. Did Delilah truly believe she could walk into her home and act like she had done nothing wrong?

The smile Beatrice wore slowly disappeared. To try trapping her son and then show up before her with her mother wanting an explanation, Delilah must have lost her mind.
