The Knight's Mysterious Maid
Chapter 86: Mother knows best (2)

Chapter 86: Mother knows best (2)

"Delilah said she was telling him of her feelings for him, and he got angry with her. I understand that Rafael does not feel the same way, but it didn’t call for what happened after," said Rachel, feeling offended that Beatrice questioned what she said when it was true that Rafael put Delilah over his shoulder.

She thought differently of Rafael, so this disappointed her. Then again, men always had hidden anger. Rafael was not as gentle as everyone painted him to be. At the end of the day, he was still a knight with a temper.

"Rachel, I think of you as a smart woman. Doesn’t this story seem odd? Your daughter went to tell my son how much she loved him, and it ended with him forcibly taking her out of his home? Why am I only hearing about my son’s actions? Tell the story from the beginning, Delilah. Not missing anything out," Beatrice said, wanting to hear the tale Delilah told her mother.

Beatrice was not angry with Rachel. All of her anger went to Delilah, who knew what she had tried to do and why Rafael reacted as he did, yet she allowed her mother to travel here, and she sat quietly. Just thinking about what might have happened if Delilah had succeeded in undressing and then crying out, angered her further.

Delilah bit her lip, not wanting to speak of what happened yesterday. Her parents were not to know since she would deal with it on her own. She had bad luck for someone there to have told her parents. She couldn’t help thinking that it was Benjamin. He should consider himself fired.

Delilah told her mother she did not want to come along to see Beatrice, but her mother would not let her stay home.

"I-I don’t want to talk about what happened yesterday-"

"Well, isn’t that why you and your mother came to my home so early in the morning when I have not yet enjoyed a full breakfast? You are telling me something about my son, so I would like for your mother to hear the full story before anything is said to anger me., More than I already am. It is taking all my strength not to lash out right now," said Beatrice.

"Do you already know the full story, Beatrice? You didn’t send a note to us. Am I missing something here?" Rachel asked, looking at Delilah, who quickly turned her head to avoid meeting her eyes. "Delilah, tell the full story from the beginning. I have come here early without notice to end this."

After enough time had passed for Delilah to confess, but she did not, Beatrice said, "That is disappointing considering how much I have doted on you. I wish for Rafael to experience the joys of marriage, but I will not force it on him, and I will not allow anyone to do it. Yesterday, your daughter decided to undress in front of my son after he banned her from coming to his home."

"Delilah!" Rachel gasped, covering her mouth.

"That is not true, mother. That is not what happened," Delilah said, grabbing her mother’s left hand. "Something happened before that. He was punishing me-"

"Before that? So it is true? Have you lost your mind?" Rachel asked, raising her voice. What would lead Delilah to think she needed to undress herself in order to find a husband? Only women with no class needed to undress themselves to get a man. Why did she let her travel to Beatrice’s house? "Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is?"

"Mother, you must listen to me first. Something happened with his maid, and I was angry that he was not going to punish her. He banned me from his home over a silly mistake," Delilah argued.

"I don’t think paying a maid to steal a dress from another maid is a silly mistake," Beatrice said. She knew the full story thanks to Edwin. She wondered if Delilah had always been this childish. It was good that she never tried to tell Rafael to marry Delilah.

Rachel touched her chest as a terrible pain arose there. It was one horror story after another. "You have all that you need at your fingertips. Why would you need to steal from a maid? You!" Rachel exclaimed, grabbing Delilah’s hand. They should not be having this conversation in front of Beatrice to make them more of a laughingstock. "We are going home."

"Mother, it is a misunderstanding. You should question why Rafael would gift an expensive dress to a maid. Do you want your son to be tangled with a maid when there are so many young women with status from whom he can choose a wife? You should question why he favors her so much," Delilah said to Beatrice. Why was no one else stopping Rafael from wasting his time with a maid? He could do so much better with someone like her.

Beatrice wished others would follow along that she did not care about the status of the woman Rafael would show interest in. As long as he got married and gave her grandchildren, she was satisfied.

To judge any woman Rafael brought to her would make her no different than her family, who judged River. She could only step in when she felt like her son was being used and Rafael could not see it.

"Beatrice, I apologise for disrupting your morning. I would not have bothered you if I knew this story and not the one I was told. Please disregard if I seemed rude earlier. I worried about her reputation," said Rachel.

Beatrice felt sorry for Rachel. Young women had to be careful with how they carried themselves and spoke so they would not ruin themselves and their chances of finding a good husband. Having a daughter was somewhat stressful since you had to worry about the smallest thing affecting them. Having your daughter act like a fool made your duty harder. Beatrice understood why Rachel would be angry, and for that, she would not get angry with Rachel.

"I am not mad at you, Rachel. Mothers are protective, and at any sign of our child being mistreated, we act without thinking. You were missing the full story. I won’t speak of what Delilah did, and I am sure Rafael does not care to tell anyone. I can’t say the same for anyone else who saw, but I will ask Rafael to tell his servants and knights not to say a word. Consider this my last gift to you," Beatrice said, aiding Delilah because she did not want her to experience the same ridicule she did.

The town tormented women for their actions more than men. If word of what happened got out, Rafael would be fine, but Delilah would not.

Delilah was confused by what Beatrice meant by the last gift. "Why is it the last?" She asked.

"Because I can no longer accept you as a guest here," Beatrice stated the obvious. After what Delilah did, it would be a slap in the face for Rafael if she continued to entertain sit-downs with Delilah. You could not try to ruin her son and then think you could sit around with her to enjoy tea the day after.

Delilah had to consider herself lucky that Beatrice was not yelling at her right now. Rather than work herself up as her mind wanted, Beatrice wanted to end the relationship she had with Delilah and eventually the one she had with Rachel if their children not getting along created tension.

Delilah found Beatrice to be ridiculous for following Rafael’s lead to cut her out of her life. She could always get back into Rafael’s good graces if his mother was still around her. "I would have made the best daughter-in-law you have ever seen. I still can," Delilah muttered, getting to her feet to leave.

Beatrice knew that one day she would have to slap sense into Delilah for still trying to pursue Rafael. She would not be as gentle as she is now.

"What am I to do with that girl?" Rachel sighed as Delilah marched out of the room.

"Keep her away from my son," Beatrice answered. She knew Delilah loved Rafael, but she never thought it was this serious for Delilah to go to such lengths. If you loved someone, you would not hurt them. If needed, you loved from afar if they could not give their heart to you.

"I will try. I had no idea she had gone to meet with him. I can’t keep her inside since she needs to marry this season so she can move on from Rafael. I will need to place someone beside her to watch where she is going at all times. What are you going to do about this maid Rafael is treating well?" Rachel asked.

Rafael could sleep with the maid if he wanted, but he should also spend his time looking for a wife.

"Pat him on the back for treating his servants well? What do you want me to say, Rachel? Tell him to treat the servants poorly?" Beatrice asked, not seeing what she had to speak to Rafael about Annalise for. She knew the dress was given to Annalise because of something Connor did. "Pay attention to your daughter instead of worrying about who my son gives a dress to. Worry about who she will try to strip in front of next."
