Chapter 84: Rafael’s maid (3)

Annalise pinched herself as she stood with Mavis outside Rafael’s room. What did she do to be awarded easily walking into Rafael’s room and not have to sneak into it? She almost hugged Mavis because of her excitement. Whatever good luck had fallen upon her, Annalise did not want it to go away.

Annalise inspected the large grey door with a frightening design on it. If she didn’t know any better, she would assume that Rafael was not human.

"You need to be here before he wakes up," Mavis said, opening the door. "The curtains need to be pulled back to let in the sun. You need to be as quiet as possible not to disturb his sleep."

’This is certainly a knight’s room,’ Annalise said in her head as she took in the sight of different armor carefully placed on shelves and an array of swords hung on the wall.

This would have to be one of her favorite rooms in the manor since it had so many weapons for her to get her hands on. Annalise’s hand itched to try using one of the swords to see if it would be lighter than it looked and how sharp the blade was.

Annalise tore her eyes away from the wall to avoid the temptation. While it was her favorite place to be, it was also the worst since she wanted to get her hands on a sword. Before she would leave here, she knew what she was going to take.

"I hope you are listening," Mavis’s voice interrupted her thoughts.

"I am," Annalise replied, hoping she had not missed anything important.

"If he trains late in the night, his armor might be placed on this table. Take it and place it on the shelves over there with the others. Do not try moving his sword. If you are careless and accidentally drop it, you will anger him," said Mavis.

"I would never drop his sword," Annalise promised. She would be angry alongside Rafael if she let a well-crafted sword slip from her hands. It was like dropping a baby.

"Don’t pick it up," Mavis stressed. No matter how many times she said this, there was the one maid who was happy to see the sword Rafael used and touch it. It ended with Rafael inspecting his sword for scratches when he returned. "You will need to run water for his baths in the morning and night. He doesn’t need you inside the bathroom with him but stand on the outside in case there is something he needs. Understood?"

Annalise nodded her head. She was grateful that she did not need to help him bathe like she heard some maids would do for people with his status. She didn’t mind serving him as his maid, but bathing him would be a new low considering they were enemies.

What if they were to meet on the battlefield and he would taunt her about bathing him? It wouldn’t end well for him to piss her off, but it wasn’t something she wanted her peers to hear.

"The rest of your job is easy. You have to follow him around and do as he says. If he leaves home, there will be times for you to follow him. If not, you stay here and clean his room. The maids like this job because your workload is less and the pay is higher. Now," Mavis folded her arms. "What did you do to make Delilah be after you?"

"What? She’s after me? Like trying to kill me or to apologise?" Annalise asked, not sure which one it was. Delilah was an unpredictable young woman, lost in keeping Rafael to herself. Annalise wouldn’t put it past Delilah to one day try to kill her because she was now Rafael’s maid.

"Why would a woman of her status have to apologise to a maid? There would be no need-"

"Do you forget that you are also a maid? You are above us, but you still serve Rafael. You are no better than I am in Delilah’s eyes. If someone wronged you, are you not deserving of an apology?" Annalise asked.

It was one thing for Delilah to look down on her and not want to apologise, but it was odd for Mavis to think she was not owed one from Delilah. Annalise didn’t want an apology from Delilah for stealing the dress since she got back at Delilah, but if she had not placed the beetles in the dress and Delilah had been caught taking the dress, would she not have to apologise because it concerned a maid?

Mavis knew nothing about what happened as far as Annalise was concerned. The head maid would want to please guests, but shouldn’t there come a time when Mavis should be on the side of the maids? Annalise wasn’t Mavis’s biggest fan, but if a guests were to hurt Mavis, she would get revenge for Mavis.

"For many of the maids who live here, you are like a second mother. It wouldn’t feel good for you to look down on us too. What is next?" Annalise asked, moving to further inspect the room.

Mavis unfolded her arms, watching Annalise in silence. She didn’t know how to respond to Annalise’s words right now. She did defend her maids, but this was Delilah they were talking about. The young woman was always respectful while Annalise would cause her headaches. What could Delilah have possibly done wrong?

"You," Mavis paused to clear her throat. "Come with me to the bathroom. You need to know where everything is and then I will show you his clothes. It would be good if you could help him select what clothes he would wear every day or when he has an important party to attend. You don’t need to wash his clothes, but you must gather them and give them to one of the other maids. We can’t have you wasting time washing his clothes and not by his side."

Just as Annalise was going to follow Mavis into the bathroom, the door opened, and Annalise thought it would be Rafael with his scary timing to interrupt Mavis telling her what she needed to do, but it was only Edwin.

"Is there something you need from me?" Mavis asked, going to the door to speak with Edwin privately.

Annalise used this chance to continue walking around the room to see more of what Rafael was like. The place he rested his head would have all the things he liked. She looked at his bed, and on the small table beside it, there was a knife.

Annalise wondered if he had placed it there on purpose to protect himself from anyone betraying him or if it was there for no reason.

"They did what!?"

Annalise flinched after Mavis’s voice filled the room. She worried for whoever had caused Mavis to yell. For once, it was not her. It was a miracle.

"I was just there with them. These girls are losing their minds. To be fighting when they should be picking up leaves. Take over telling Annalise what needs to be done as Rafael’s maid. I will deal with those maids," Mavis’s voice became softer as she left the room.

Annalise frowned at the mention of leaves. That was where she was before Mavis looked for her, and it was there Mavis announced she would be Rafael’s maid. She left Cara behind with the others.
