The Knight's Mysterious Maid
Chapter 49: Attention (2)

Chapter 49: Attention (2)

’He’s going to die a slow, painful death by my hands one day,’ Annalise glared at Christian, who placed her right where she did not want to be. He unknowingly made himself a double enemy to her, and she was never going to forget this very moment.

"Come along," Giselle said, desperately wanting to get out of the sun. "I should have asked my brother to help me find him, but that fool ran off as soon as I gave him food."

’Why am I stuck with the person everyone is running away from?’ Annalise sighed. She crossed her fingers, hoping Giselle would be much better to be around than Delilah.

Annalise followed Giselle inside to the dining room, where Giselle sat down at the head of the table as if she were already Rafael’s wife.

Giselle placed one leg over the other and stared at Annalise, who looked at the floor. "What do you think of me?" She asked. She knew what others thought because of the way she dressed and her boldness.

"You are a pretty young lady," Annalise replied, not knowing what else to say since she did not know much about the lady before her. What was her personality like? The only other thing Annalise knew was that she could make Rafael disappear. ’I am almost tempted to kidnap her and use her if he tries helping the border guards.’

"That’s what everyone says. Is there nothing else to comment on?" Giselle asked.

"I don’t know you," Annalise softly said, reminding Giselle of the small detail. Should she list out fake compliments?

"That is true, but you maids normally have so many compliments that it gets me out of my foul mood. What do you think of my appearance? Do you think it will help me catch Rafael?" Giselle asked.

’Catch him?’ Annalise thought, picturing Giselle running after Rafael like the knights outside were trying to catch chickens.

"I thought the women here were to dress more modestly. I am from the countryside, so I have a hard time adjusting to this town," Annalise answered.

"So that was why you tried to shield me from their eyes. We should dress modestly. Honestly, I did not leave home looking like this. My uncle would have killed me. I just tugged the dress down a bit when I got by the front door in hopes I could seduce Rafael. I have to beat those other ladies who have their eyes on him. Has anyone other than Delilah visited him?" Giselle asked, playing with her fingers as she nervously awaited the answer.

"I have only seen Lady Delilah-"

"Good!" Giselle exclaimed, happy with this answer. "That means I have been the second to make my move. I could call myself the first since Delilah is like a child to Rafael. Hardly a woman he would want to share his bed with."

Annalise didn’t see how Giselle’s situation was any better when Rafael ran away from her the moment he saw her coming.

"What is with that face? You just thought something bad of me, didn’t you?" Giselle pointed a finger at Annalise. "What is it? Be out with it quickly! I want to hear the truth."

"I didn’t think anything bad of you, my lady. I just..." Annalise paused to take a deep breath. "This bold appearance you have does not want to be working. Maybe he doesn’t want a woman who gets so much attention from other men. I am certain that with one wrong move I will see something that I have, but I don’t want to see it from another woman unless we are bathing in the lake."

Giselle touched her chest. It was secured better than others realised, but there were times when she almost had them slip out. What else was she supposed to do to get his attention if not this? Before her new bold personality and the way she dressed when her family was not looking, she was always forgotten in the back.

"This is all I have. Shouldn’t this be enough to get a man to want to wed me? I got the attention of all his knights back here. You saw it!" Giselle yelled, frustrated that her appearance was working on the man she needed it to. "Do you think because he’s spent so much time with knights that his interest in women is gone?" She whispered.

Annalise leaned down to be closer to Giselle and whispered, "I don’t know what you are asking me."

Giselle didn’t see what was so difficult to understand about her words. Did the maid not want to talk about it since it would cause a big scandal? "Forget about it. He was seen with a few women in the past, but then he just stopped. Those women were hard to compete with. They weren’t ladies of wealthy houses, but their beauty must have lured them to him."

"Do you think that if I learned to use a sword, he would take an interest in me since my appeal isn’t working? He must want a woman interested in war or knowing how to defend herself. He doesn’t talk much when I ask about other things. I should get my brother to help me pick up a sword. It cannot be that hard since you just swing it around and cut someone."

Annalise had something to say to that but resisted the urge since she did not want to get too wrapped up in it. What did sound intriguing to her was this young woman asking Rafael questions about war. She could offer her help in giving questions to ask Rafael and other things a knight would be interested in, in exchange for the responses Rafael gave.

A maid from the countryside, where they didn’t know her family, might seem suspicious if she asked too many questions, but a young lady trying to get Rafael’s attention would seem perfectly normal.

No one would think much of it, and they would politely stop her when they felt she was asking too much. Normally, they would not want a lady asking too much about the war. They were meant to focus on simple things like marriage and children.

Annalise thought it was stupid considering the fact that everyone should know the truth about wars to know if they should pack their things and try to go somewhere safe. Annalise found that this kingdom had a habit of keeping its people in the dark. Feeding lies about their enemies.

At home, the women, men, and children were all well informed, so the women of age or with children could run away to nearby groups like them while the others defended the land.

"What would you do if you wanted to get his attention? There are some of you who like to sleep with your employers. The town has had a few moments of scandal with husbands and maids when the wives are away or even when they are there. There was one maid so bold as to taunt the wife, who could do nothing to get rid of her because the husband loved the maid and even made a child with her. Disgraceful," Giselle shook her head.

’I don’t want to get his attention,’ Annalise thought. That was not what she was here for. She was meant to go unnoticed while gathering information and learning their ways. Somehow she ended up not only catching his attention but also having him watch to see when she would mess up again. ’These women should do whatever I did.’
