The Knight's Mysterious Maid -
Chapter 48: Attention (1)
Chapter 48: Attention (1)
Annalise was confused when the knights stopped their hard work to collect her eggs. They were just standing around looking in the same direction where she heard someone yell, but she had not paid much attention to it then.
"Where did Rafael run off to?" Giselle asked for anyone to answer. She spent far longer than she would have liked searching for him and now that she had finally found him, he was off again without speaking to her. She needed to make the most of her being the only lady here.
Giselle knew there would soon be other ladies swarming this estate to see Rafael because she had overheard them. That was why she arrived so early and by some luck, she was able to get rid of Delilah. This would be a good day for her if Rafael would just stay in one place.
Giselle intended to be the one to capture his attention and prove the girls who had said she blended in with the background wrong. She returned to town looking different in hopes this bold look would be able to seduce the man everyone wanted. Girls like Delilah who tease her were only now jealous that she was getting so much attention from men.
Annalise remembered this young lady as the one who tried to use her as a shield by the front door. Now she knew why the knights were so distracted. Had they never seen a lady before?
They were the ones standing around half-naked and yet, no one was gawking at them. At least not right now.
They should at least have the decency to not stand and stare.
Annalise went to stand in front of Giselle to block her body from their eyes. Yet again this town confused her. She heard of an unwritten rule for ladies to dress moderately before men so they wouldn’t be seen as presumptuous or be seen the same as the women in what were called red-light districts.
The men here could walk around shirtless, but the ladies had to be aware of their surroundings so she didn’t see why the woman before her was practically flaunting her chest.
’They’ve created so many rules for themselves that they are unable to keep up with them,’ Annalise concluded. At this point, she should stop trying to learn their rules and just take things as they were before her.
"Is there something I can help you with?" Annalise politely asked so she could use this young lady to get away from the chickens.
Giselle took a step back and eyed the maid before her from head to toe. This was the same maid that Rafael had taken to speak with alone and on her way here, she saw Rafael close to the maid before moving away. ’Why is there only one maid out here with all these knights?’ She thought.
"I am looking for Rafael. Where is he going now?" Giselle asked, placing her hand over her nose, as the scent of the chickens was not pleasant. The scent was so horrible that she wanted to vomit. If not for Rafael, she would torture herself like this.
"There was something urgent the young master had to take care of, but he should be back soon. The knights are still training, as you can see. Well, they were training before your beauty distracted them," Annalise said since they were still standing around doing nothing while some of the eggs she needed were not collected.
Giselle resisted the urge to smile after hearing the compliment. It didn’t matter that it came from a maid. A compliment was a compliment in her eyes. It felt good to finally have someone acknowledge how she looked today without her feeling there was a joke hidden in their words. "Thank you," Giselle replied.
"Instead of waiting here where there are feathers and the smell isn’t something to enjoy, you can wait inside, and I can bring you something to drink or eat while the young master is busy. I’m sure the knights would tell him that you wish to speak with him," said Annalise.
"That sounds better than playing hide and seek with him plus standing around in the hot sun. Very well. Come with me," Giselle said, picking up the bottom of her dress so it wouldn’t be dirtied. She turned around to walk back inside, where there was shade and no awful smell.
"Wait what?" Annalise asked, confused as to why she needed to follow. She intended to use her to go back inside and maybe grab some food for the young lady before going to do another job. Annalise wasn’t looking forward to being stuck with the woman Rafael was running from.
Annalise looked behind her at Christian, who smiled and shooed her away with his hands.
"Come along!" Giselle yelled when she noticed she was not being followed. "You shall wait by my side and tend to me while I wait for Rafael. I have some questions that need to be answered."
Annalise smiled as she had to turn down the request to follow. "I’m afraid I cannot leave my duty, which is to collect eggs. I can bring you something to drink, but then I would have to leave-"
"You need to go to the head maid and tell her you want the maid to be by your side," said Christian.
Annalise balled up her fists to hold herself back from attacking the knight, who was not being helpful at the moment.
"That settles it. Come with me, and I will go to the head maid," Giselle said.
"Or," Annalise interrupted since she had a better idea in mind. She didn’t know what Giselle was like or what questions she wanted to ask, but she was not going to take any chances of ending up in another Delilah situation.
"How about you go take a seat inside, and I shall find the young master and bring him to you? I will say that it is urgent and he must come right away. A beautiful lady like yourself should not be kept waiting or walking all around. He should come to you. Did that work?" Annalise muttered as Giselle nodded her head like she agreed with it.
"It did. I hope you will not disappoint me with bringing him to me. Go on," Giselle said, flicking her hand for Annalise to get moving. She was tired of walking around in her shoes, which were tight and had a bit of heel.
Annalise didn’t know how she got herself out of this, but she was glad it worked. She turned around to follow where Rafael had run off. If only her father knew that to get rid of Rafael, he only needed to place women on the battlefield, and Rafael would run away.
Annalise stood beside Christian and whispered, "I will tell the young master that it was you who sent me to find him for her."
She would bring everyone down with her once she found Rafael and told him a young lady needed to speak with him.
"Is that so? Then, Giselle. Rafael is busy taking care of a private matter, which would take an hour or so. If you wish to stay, take the maid and enjoy a drink or a bit of cake. I will find the head maid and tell her the maid is by your side," Christian said, resisting the urge to smile at the young maid glaring at him.
This maid could do many things except make Rafael think he helped find him for Giselle. That would result in intense training as a punishment, and he was not up for that at the moment.
