The Knight's Mysterious Maid
Chapter 50: Attention (3)

Chapter 50: Attention (3)

"I have no interest in the young master therefore there isn’t much advice I can offer you," Annalise replied.

"That’s good. I would hate it if you had eyes for the man that I intend to marry since I happen to like you. You are quiet, honest, and I happen to like that your earlier comment about me being beautiful seemed to come from your heart. If not for you being a maid, we would be good friends," said Giselle.

Annalise didn’t like the last comment. Why was there such a distance between them simply because she worked cleaning while Giselle was some sort of lady whose family never let her lift a finger?

Though they were from different worlds, Annalise’s status at home would place her far above the young woman seated before her. Yet she never held back from making friends with those who would enter her father’s home to clean it. There were many times when she joined in to help them clean so they could go out into the fields to play around.

Her father wasn’t hidden away in a palace where his people could not reach him to voice concerns or receive shelter. There would be someone with a higher status who would look down on Giselle and not want to welcome her as a friend. Surely, that would not feel good to hear.

"My lady, I should get you something to drink since you were walking around for so long and then in the hot sun. Excuse me," Annalise said, slightly bowing her head before leaving.

Giselle was not childish like Delilah, but there was something about the young woman that made Annalise not like her yet. Annalise didn’t intend to be friends with Giselle so she didn’t want to think too much about what was said a moment ago.

Life worked in a strange way where one could be swimming in gold now but then have to clean the floors of someone else later. Then the people you distanced yourself from, because you saw yourself above them, would not help you because they could not forget your words.

"Bush girl."

Annalise sighed when she heard the ridiculous name. She didn’t know which was worse. Bush girl or pervert? Wasn’t she dealing with enough by having to fight chickens and listening to a young lady talk about marrying Rafael? What had she done to deserve this?

"Oh right," Annalise muttered as she remembered the snakes and the beetles. "Those people had it coming to them, so bad luck and bad timing, please leave me alone."

"Talking to yourself now? Should I start calling you a crazy girl? Hey! Don’t speed up," Logan said, trying to keep up with her. She was quite fast on her feet for a little lady.

Annalise abruptly stopped, not wanting to deal with the nuisance behind her. He was like a dog, sniffing her out when he knew she wasn’t in the mood to be annoyed. "What do you want from me?" She asked.

Logan walked around Annalise to stand before her. He was getting luckier at running into her. "I saw my friend walking by and thought I would come to say hello."

"Friends?" Annalise repeated the word that she would not use to define them. "I wouldn’t even say we are acquaintances."

Logan touched his chest, where there was a stinging feeling. "I feel like I have been burned with this kind of response too much this week. How are we not friends? I saved you from getting bit by a snake, and we talked for a bit at the party. Not to forget that I intend to beat the shit out of Connor when I see him."

"No one asked you to do that or anything else," Annalise replied, walking around him.

"Well, I did and I will because I care. I want us to be good friends since each time I am around you, I have fun. Being my friend isn’t so bad. Ask anyone- no," Logan took that back since there were a few fools who would say something foolish to embarrass him. "Ask anyone I point you to, and you will learn that I make a good friend."

"I thought your growing interest in me was what kept you bothering me," said Annalise.

Logan’s eyes widened, and for a second, he lost his footing.

Annalise lazily looked to her right where he almost fell. "So I was right. Kill that interest now before I do it myself. I don’t need any more friends. Leave me alone."

Logan coughed as he was still getting over the shock of her already knowing he was trying to court her. A friendship was merely the start. "How could I not be interested in you? You are quite the woman, but I am just looking for friendship right now. Nothing more. If you ever need my help-"

"You would offer it?" Annalise finished for him. He had suddenly become useful. "Okay friend," she stressed the word friend. "I need your help with something or someone."

"W-What- Uhmm," Logan cleared his throat. "What is it that you need help with?"

Annalise smiled at the fact that he had no idea what he just offered his help for.

"Absolutely not!" Logan crossed his arms into an x after Annalise took him to the dining room and showed him Giselle sitting alone.

"I thought you were going to help me, friend," Annalise stressed the word once more.

Logan now realised something about her. "You’re a cruel woman, Annalise. I am not going to approach Giselle and offer to take her to Rafael, who is probably hiding, so you can be free of her. I like living, and I won’t if I take her to Rafael."

"Some friend you are," Annalise said, turning around to make her way to the kitchen to get something to drink.

"Wait, wait, wait," Logan repeated, reaching out for her hand to stop her, but Annalise noticed it and moved so he could not touch her. "How about we get the butler to tell her that Rafael is busy and send her away?"

"Wonderful idea. Go tell him," said Annalise.

"Now hold on," Logan said, putting his right hand up. "I came up with the idea therefore, you should be the one to find Edwin and have her leave. That and the fact that his expressionless face creeps me out. As a friend, I must encourage you to deal with your own problems."

"Really?" Annalise smiled, watching Logan happily nod his head. "Well, it’s too bad we are not friends. I will find someone else to help me, or I will just suffer through hearing her attempts to make the young master her husband."

"Why not just tell her about the other young women who showed up not long ago?" Logan pointed over his shoulder, where he last saw them. The guards at the gate were going to get an earful from Rafael for letting just anyone in, especially when the knights had fallen back into training. "I like to call it hunting season, and the women are the hunters. Rafael is the prized animal they want. It is rude to leave in the middle of a conversation."

Annalise ignored Logan and walked back into the dining room to tell Giselle this news.

Giselle looked at Annalise’s empty hands. "You’re back without a drink. Don’t tell me that the kitchen doesn’t have something prepared, or did you forget what you were going to do?"

"No, I was just informed that there are other young ladies here to see the young-"

"What!" Giselle yelled, getting to her feet. She could not sit around when there was competition here. "They’ve got another thing coming if they think they will get to speak with him when I have not had much time with him," she muttered, walking off without hearing which way to go from Annalise.
