Chapter 126: Controlling (3)
River knew there was something more to the story because of how defensive Rafael had become, but since he was bound to hear something from Henry telling others about it, and they had something more important to talk about, he was dropping it for now.
They entered his study which had technically become Beatrice’s study since she was always in here. There were flowers placed all over the study since she claimed it needed to have more life and colour inside of it.
"Before I killed the man he sent, I was told that Travis is bringing some young lady to town for you to get married to. I was a bit impulsive and did not get the name, but I am sure we will find out soon who it is. He seems to be looking to get what he missed your mother did not marry," River said.
Rafael didn’t know what the world had against him for everyone to be looking for him to get married and to someone of their choice. "Why is it always marriage?" He asked.
River felt bad for Rafael since every way he turned, there was someone speaking about marriage. He already had to deal with his mother who was losing patience waiting for grandchildren. "Because you make a good candidate for a husband. You and your friends seem to have some pact to not get married and there are many who are up to the challenge to change that. I will try to find out which family this young lady is coming from."
"I can ask around to find out what family has recently come back to town or what new family has settled here. I will find her and Travis. The bastard must be somewhere close by. If there is anyone among your knights you think is not loyal to you, I suggest you send them off to be under someone else’s command. It is good you have gotten rid of Connor already," said River.
"Now that he doesn’t have to pretend that he likes being a part of Rafael’s knights, he has been finding it hard to keep his mouth shut about things that have happened on his journey. If I were this Travis, I would befriend Connor. Even the men in the palace looking to find something about Rafael will befriend him," Christian said.
He would like to see Connor just for a few minutes to help him permanently shut his mouth.
"Connor has already left for White Town so there is no way for him to speak to Travis unless it is through letters, but the knight he is under is strict. He only allows letters from relatives. I will keep an eye on his father to see if anyone approached him to send a letter. Was mother truly alright or is she trying to not have me worry?" Rafael asked though he figured it was the latter.
"She started to panic just from hearing that he was here. Your mother still has some stories about her relationship with her brother which she has not finished telling me, but I am aware that he started to be controlling once his father gave him a bit of power to deal with your mother’s engagement. I should have killed him back then, but your mother and I were more focused on getting out of town," said River.
When Beatrice came to him in the middle of the night, confessing she wanted to be with him, he prepared to have the two of them leave town and stay where her family could not find them. It was only when he returned to the knights did they stopped hiding.
"We have brought our issue from the past to you-"
"You have nothing to apologise for. Even if you killed him in the past, there would be some relative hunting you down now. It cannot be helped that her family does not know when to quit trying to get something from her and now me. If possible, we should just trap all of them in a house and burn it down," Rafael suggested. The children he could leave be, but every other fool would die.
"I think it is better to split up the ones who are in on Travis’s plans and kill them one by one. I have not forgotten the names of those who offended her and joined Travis in ridiculing her. The door to the past has opened up and now I have unfinished business to finish up. I have called on some knights to help guard your mother. I must find her a guard," River said as she could no longer be alone.
Most of the time, he travelled with Beatrice or she would travel by herself when going to Rafael’s home, but that could no longer happen with her crazy brother looking to toy with her.
"There is a lot for you to deal with concerning the border and then the trouble that Grant is stirring up in the palace. I know that you want to help protect your mother and kill that bastard with me, but I will take care of it. I will call upon you should I need your help. Do not argue against it," River added when Rafael tried to deny his request. "It will give your mother peace of mind to know that you are not involved."
"I will make not make any promises that I will not find him and kill him. I can only promise that I will do it quietly so mother will not find out. It is both of our duties to protect her. You as a husband and me as a son. I cannot sit still when there is a dangerous threat looming around her and I would prefer if you do not ask me to keep out of it," Rafael said.
"I knew that you would not back down. Keep in mind that your mother might kill me if she learns that you are getting involved in dealing with her brother. You like having a father, don’t you?" River asked to make sure they were on the same page about him not wanting to be scolded by his wife and potentially lose his life.
"You are too dramatic," Rafael replied, walking to the door to leave. His parents seemed to be doing fine now that the moment had long passed. "I am returning home. I have much to do back home. I will say goodbye to mother before leaving. I will try to make it for dinner soon to help put her in a better mood. I will do my best to come more often."
"You only live four houses away so I do not understand why it is so hard for you to visit us more. We have both missed you the weeks you were gone. I told you not to overwork yourself like I did when I was your age. There was so much that I missed out on because I lost myself in thinking about the kingdom. Now there is this family matter. Do me a favour and do something that makes you happy, son," River advised Rafael.
Time could not be turned back to enjoy the moments you missed. You needed to enjoy them while they were right in front of you.
