Chapter 127: His type of woman (1)

"You are to fold it like this. It is simple and quick to allow you to move on to another task in good time. You won’t need another person to help you if you’ve followed the way I have now taught you," Mavis said as she folded a sheet for Annalise.

’How did I get here?’ Annalise wondered.

She finished cleaning Rafael’s bedroom after giving it a quick look around and found nothing important. She concluded that everything important was all in his study which he kept locked.

Though that was bad for her because it meant she had to sneak in again, she applauded someone in his position for not being foolish to leave important information lying around in a room that was not locked. Rafael shouldn’t trust all his knights and he certainly shouldn’t trust his maids. She was an example of why.

Just like her, there were others who would be sneaking around, trying to get information for their own motives. Annalise doubted she was the only one here pretending to be a maid.

"Are you listening to me?" Mavis asked, snapping her fingers to get Annalise’s attention once more. "It is a lot to remember, but it is important that you do. Since he wants you to stay by his side and you seem to like this position, you must remember everything that I am telling you. You are to become the perfect maid despite this," Mavis said, motioning to Annalise’s full body.

’What is it with the people here and their insults?’ Annalise questioned in her head.

"I have been listening and taking in your words. I was just repeating it in my head. I am sorry if it seemed like I was not paying attention," Annalise apologised.

She liked the lesson from Mavis, but it was just weird for the two of them to be alone like this.

Mavis stared at Annalise for a moment, trying to place if her words were a lie, but she could not find Annalise to be lying to her face. "You have remembered how I told you to treat his guests? No matter what they say, you are to stand on the side and smile. You can vent your anger or cry when you are alone."

"Why would I cry?" Annalise asked out of curiosity. She was only to serve and stand around for whatever Rafael needed.

Mavis sighed, knowing that Annalise was oblivious because this was her first job as a maid. "Most of his guests will be men with wealth or titles who do not know when to hold their tongue because they can afford to say what they want. It would not be the first time one of them were to say something uncomfortable to a maid in the room. You must not say anything or let it show that you are uncomfortable. Just smile."

Mavis had experienced them becoming entertained when she showed that she did not like their words. They started to talk to her like a child, telling her not to be afraid. From then on she masked her feelings and just smiled.

"If I stand around smiling at the things they say, wouldn’t that send the wrong message?" Annalise asked.

She had a feeling there would be the one person to try touching her and she was not fond of being touched by the men here.

"That is just what you are meant to do. If anyone tries to get too close to you, Rafael will stop them. He is kind to not let anyone interfere with his maids. The chances of him bringing a bad guest here are low, but there may be times you must go with him outside of the manor. It is the same for when there are young women who are looking to get his favour and hate to see any woman beside him," said Mavis.

"I understand," Annalise replied.

She was not looking to have any more Delilahs in her life. Annalise did not see exactly where she went wrong with Delilah since she had told Delilah that she was not here to be with Rafael. There wasn’t much she could do when Delilah asked for the dress since it did not belong to her.

In the end, Annalise chose to blame Delilah’s parents because of how they spoiled her. Delilah held out her hand and expected everything to fall into it.

’Perhaps it was when I told her that I only take orders from Beatrice, but that was what I was told,’ Annalise said, still not seeing that as enough reason for her and Delilah to be where they are now.

"Fold it as I have shown you. What is she doing here?" Mavis asked, stepping to the side to get a look at the young woman who just walked by the hall. "Who let her through the gates? Where is Edwin? Of all things to happen when Rafael is away."

Annalise turned around to see who had come to get Mavis so worked up all of a sudden. She hoped Delilah had not wiggled her way inside of here while Rafael was away. Annalise had a no-killing rule while she acted as a maid, but if something was done to her, there would be a funeral, but not for her.

"Lady Giselle!" Mavis called after the young woman.

"Oh," Annalise said and then sighed in relief. She would take Giselle over Delilah any day, but as Mavis asked, how did Giselle get inside the gates when Rafael would not want her to be here? Unless Rafael had returned and allowed her inside.

Annalise put down the sheet and followed Mavis to get the answer to her question.

Mavis followed Giselle who would not slow down as she walked to the dining room and Annalise followed behind Mavis. She found it very rude for Giselle to continue to ignore Mavis calling after her as she walked inside the manor.

Annalise picked up her pace, walking past Mavis to catch up to Giselle. She managed to reach her and stepped in front of Giselle.

"Oh, that scared me. Were you trying to make my chest hurt?" Giselle questioned, touching her chest as her heart rushed from the maid suddenly showing up in front of her.

Annalise smiled despite her annoyance that Giselle had Mavis running after her. She and Mavis weren’t the best of friends, but Mavis was still the head maid so the guest should listen to when Mavis tried speaking to her. "The head maid has been calling for you, Lady Giselle."

"Oh!" Giselle exclaimed, remembering Annalise from the last time she was here. "I did not hear anyone calling after me and it was rude for you to block my path."

Annalise didn’t believe her since it was hard to ignore Mavis when she was so out of breath from the short run. You had to hear the wheezing, her footsteps, and then your name being called. Annalise kept quiet so she wouldn’t make another enemy.

She did Mavis a favour by getting Giselle to stop walking through the manor as if she owned it. Now it was time for her to leave.

"Lady Giselle. It is wonderful to see you again. Is there something I can help you with?" Mavis asked.

"I am here to see Rafael obviously. I did not get the chance to speak with him as much as I wanted the last time I was here. Where is he?" Giselle asked, looking around for him. She got all dressed up just for him.

Annalise walked around the pair since she did not want to be present for what would be said.

"He is not home at the moment so if you could please-"

"Then I will wait for him and while I do, I want her to be my maid," Giselle said, pointing at Annalise.

Annalise stopped walking and closed her eyes. She was always in the wrong place at the wrong time.
