The Knight's Mysterious Maid
Chapter 124: Controlling (1)

Chapter 124: Controlling (1)

Annalise was still puzzled when Mavis left her alone. She now knew what Rafael had spoken to Mavis about when he took her inside the library and he left out that it was her who told him about the gates.

It couldn’t be helped that Mavis knew it was her, but it wasn’t like she was trying to get Mavis fired. She was only trying to find a way out to meet with Thomas.

Now that Mavis wanted her to clean Rafael’s room, she was once again unable to find a spot to train. However, if she could not leave to find Thomas tonight, since she would have to search the town for wherever he might be as it was not a day for them to meet, she would sneak off down by the river to start training again.

Annalise finally got over the small shock of Mavis starting over with her and began to head up to the second floor to clean Rafael’s room. The sooner she cleaned it, the sooner she could go back to her room and rest since she could not go down to the river when there were so many eyes watching.

’I will be alone in his room,’ Annalise smiled.

She was presented with a golden opportunity to sneak around and look at his swords. This time, she needed to avoid cutting herself with a sword and to make sure that would not happen again, she could just not touch the sword, but how was she not supposed to pick it up when it was right infront of her? This time there wouldn’t be anyone to barge inside the room to startle her and have her almost drop the sword.

Annalise entered Rafael’s bedroom and closed the door behind her. She locked the door before she could step any further into his room. The last thing she needed to happen was Mavis or Edwin entering while she was playing with a sword.

Annalise went straight to the wall full of swords and picked up the same sword she cut herself with. "What would it take for me to get a sword like this without stealing it?" She asked herself.

She had to leave her precious sword with Thomas and now that she saw the swords Rafael owned, she found it time for her to get a new sword. She could not replace her old sword since it was special to her, but it should have a sibling.

Annalise unsheathed the sword to look at the blade. She touched the metal, intrigued by how it was melted and the markings that were made on the sword. The weapons back home were great thanks to people like Thomas who were able to remake the designs of any weapons they collected from fallen Castro border guards, but they were in need of more resources to make their weapons.

They had to venture out beyond their land to get metal and other resources. It was a dangerous trip, but worth it to protect everyone.

Annalise positioned herself and swung the sword. "Oh that is wonderful. I miss this," she said, almost tempted to hug the sword which was better than a child.

Before she could get carried away, she put the sword back how she found it and started to clean the room so she could be free to do as she wanted right after.

Meanwhile, Rafael rode a horse to his parents’ home with Christian right behind him on his own horse. He could not stop worrying about how his mother would react to her brother being in town. Rafael knew that he was coming because of the letters sent, but he did not anticipate his arrival would be so soon.

Rafael and Christian were let into the gates without any hesitation from River’s guards when they arrived. A servant took the reins of the horse after Rafael jumped off and practically ran to the door so he could see his mother sooner.

She was a fragile woman despite how strong she was to take care of him while she was still figuring out how the world worked since she once lived a pampered life.

She spoke kindly of her mother and recalled how her father used to spoil her, but she spoke nothing of her brother when she told Rafael stories about her side of the family.

"Rafael-"

"I am going to see my mother," Rafael said as he walked by Charles who happened to be near the front door to open it for him and Christian. He could not stop to speak with anyone now.

"Hello," Christian greeted the butler. He took one look back at the path to the house which was stained with blood. Servants carried water to try washing it away. He knew Beatrice well since she treated the knights like her sons and knew that she would not be happy to see blood anywhere in her home.

Beatrice had a family of knights, but she was not fond of seeing blood or fighting because it made her worry for her husband and son’s lives.

Before Rafael could run upstairs to the second floor where his parent’s bedroom was, Charles stopped him.

"Your mother and father are in the garden," Charles said. It was a peculiar time for either one to be gardening after what happened in the front yard, but Beatrice only calmed down when she went into the garden and distracted herself.

She could not leave home since River forbade her from going anywhere so she could not try speaking to her brother. Beatrice wasn’t fond of River not allowing her to leave her own home.

Rafael changed direction to the garden and just as Charles said, he found his mother stooping down on the ground with a small tool in her hand as she dug at the dirt. His father stood off to the side watching her and from this, he knew the two were not speaking to each other.

"Mother," Rafael said to get her attention.

Beatrice did not look up from her work in the garden and said, "I am fine. There is no need for you to worry, Rafael."

"She was not fine-"

"I am better now," Beatrice quickly said, drowning out River’s words. She did not want to worry Rafael with how afraid she had been of her brother being here when she now learned that he was not here yet.

Rafael sighed. The fire in her that she used to answer his father showed that she was fine now, but he did not see why the two of them were at odds when they should direct their anger to his uncle. "Why are the two of you fighting?" He took a risk and asked.

"Your father seems to think that I am crazy enough to leave our home and seek out my brother when I know how dangerous he is more than the two of you know. I am not a fool and I do not like to be controlled. If I want to leave, I should be able to leave without a guard blocking my path because of my husband’s order," Beatrice answered. If she had to leave, it would have been to see Rafael.

"I am only protecting you," River said.

He knew that her anger had little to do with him, but the fact she felt controlled like she was when she came of age back when she lived with her father and brother.
