Chapter 123: A woman’s attention (2)

"Why is he fighting with us?" Michael whispered to Christian.

"To impress a woman," Christian replied, looking to the side at Annalise who was probably the only person enjoying seeing Rafael fight against them.

Michael didn’t see that as the reason why since the only woman here was Rafael’s maid and the sky would have to fall before she could be the woman Rafael was trying to impress. This was the same woman Logan had warned everyone else not to court since she was his. "I don’t think that’s the reason he’s trying to kill us," he answered.

"You are still too young to understand the things a man does to get attention from a woman," said Christan.

"Aren’t we the same age?" Michael asked, certain that they were.

"Oh right. You’re so short that I forget you are not a child," Christian replied, still watching Annalise. Every time she cheered after Rafael won he was picking someone else from the men to fight against. If they did not get rid of her now, they might end up having to fight Rafael all day. "Michael, go suggest to her that Rafael might want water."

"It’s your plan so why the hell do I have to leave where I am to speak to that woman? What if I were to be caught by Rafael while I speak to her? You just said that he was doing all of this to get her attention. If that is true for even a second, the sight of another man around her would have him ready to fight me next. You cannot fool me," Michael said, proud of himself for seeing right through Christian.

"I supposed there had to come a point in time when you would have common sense-"

"Oh no. He’s looking this way or am I just looking his way and it seems like he’s looking at me?" Michael panicked.

"And now that moment for you to have sense has passed. It is your time to fight against him," Christian said, pushing Michael forward to fight against Rafael next. While Michael fought, he needed to look for a space to hide. He was not going to have his body bruised all because Rafael was going hard to court the weird woman.

"Commander," Michael greeted Rafael with a shy wave. "I would love to fight against you, but I fear that I am sick-"

"Your sword," Rafael said, not caring about the lies Michael was coming up with. Michael was full of energy right before he said he would be the one fighting all of them one on one.

Michael feigned an offended look. "Do you not care about my health? I am a scout more than I fight. I think it is necessary that I stay back when I don’t feel good. You don’t want this to become something serious. And Christian was the one talking bad about you wanting attention!" Michael revealed this as a last attempt to not go against Rafael yet.

"That little shit," Christian cursed, wanting to strangle Michael for dragging him into this. "That is not what happened-"

"Sir!" A guard from the gates came running into the yard.

"What is it?" Rafael asked, pushing his sword into Michael’s hands.

"We received a message that your father has killed five men. Cut off their heads and send them off in a carriage. Your father wishes to speak with you."

"Michael, take over training this group. Christian, come with me," Rafael ordered as he walked toward the manor to get changed and visit his parent’s home. This was the first time he ever heard of his father killing someone and then sending their heads off somewhere meant that it was personal.

"Yes, Sir!"

"What am I to do?" Annalise asked, following Rafael as he walked at a great speed back inside.

Rafael stopped now that he remembered Annalise. "There might still be some danger so you are to stay here and keep out of trouble. Do not for a second think of going through those gates while I am not around."

"Okay," Annalise replied, watching him continue to leave. She wished to know what it was that called for his father to kill someone and remove their heads. ’After I made up my mind that I do not want to visit his parents anymore now something has happened and I cannot go,’ she thought.

There were more battles in this kingdom than she and her family were aware of. The people here were pointing their swords at each other. Annalise wished they would do it more often and forget about the border.

Annalise would like to know who it was that River was fighting against, but she doubted this would be spoken of out loud unless the other maids heard something or one of the knights let it slip out.

The bright side of Rafael leaving was that she had time to herself to find a spot far past the river to try training or to start writing a letter to Thomas. If Rafael had gotten Mavis to change her rule, it meant Annalise could leave to find Thomas tonight.

Annalise started to walk back inside the manor to be out of the hot sun. She lost all interest in the knights training since Rafael was not present. It just wasn’t the same when the commander was not present.

Annalise went back inside and immediately felt that her bad luck was once again upon her as she stumbled into Mavis. She tried to turn around to get far away, but Mavis stopped her.

"Stay right where you are. You are just who I have been looking for. The young master- Sir Rafael," Mavis corrected himself. "I just heard him inform Edwin to prepare a horse for him. While he is away, that does not mean you are free to sit around. You should dust his room, change the sheets of his bed, and do whatever cleaning needs to be done while he is away."

"I understand," Annalise replied.

"I know that you must have something to do with all the changes he is making. Before you became his maid, he did not bother to speak of not wanting to be called young master, and it is not a coincidence that he is now aware of maids not leaving the gates at a certain time. I cannot tell if you spoke of it to place me in a bad light or if there are other reasons. I just know that you bring trouble, but since he is hellbent on keeping you by his side. I will start over," said Mavis.

"What?" Annalise questioned, confused by what Mavis said.

"I still think that there are far better maids who have been working hard and training for that position, but you seem to fit by his side and he is willing to keep you there. Rather than continuing to try to change his mind, I will make you better. Regardless of what you think of me, I care about his reputation and I shall not have you ruin it. So be prepared for the training that will come. We shall all forget that you were a little farm girl," Mavis said.

Annalise felt like she had somehow fallen into another world because of their conversation. She was unable to respond to what Mavis was planning to do with her.
