Chapter 113: Spoiled (2)
Rafael gave Edwin the command to let Henry inside of the gates and allowed him to come inside his study so they could talk without the servants trying to listen to the conversation.
"Rafael," Henry entered the study with his arms wide open. "It has been a while since I met with you or your father. It is good to be here again."
Rafael did not share the same excitement. Whether Henry would ever be allowed to step foot inside his manor depended on how this conversation would go. "It has not been long. You were here for the party and for dinner when I was asked to escort your daughter."
"That is true but it feels longer for some reason. Our families have never been angry with each other," Henry said, sitting down on a couch in front of Rafael. "Do you have any cigars or something to drink here?"
"I do not have either one. Our families would not be at odds if not for what your daughter did. Get to the point and stop stalling. Say what you have come all this way to tell me," Rafael said.
He wasn’t in the mood for a pleasant conversation with Henry. This was not a time to be acting like nothing was wrong.
"Right," Henry said, taking his own cigar out of his coat for him to light. "I’ve been dealing with a lot from my wife and daughter these days. It is not a second that goes by without me having to hear that you have broken Delilah’s heart and then there is the fact that you shamed my daughter in front of your servants. You know that my family has a reputation to uphold and Delilah is looking to marry so there-"
"Your daughter forgot about this reputation you speak of when she tried to undress before me. You should be more worried about her actions than me kicking her out of my home. I gave her the chance to walk out here without my help. She did not move so I moved her. Did you come here to tell me that I was the one wrong in that situation?" Rafael asked, leaning back in his chair.
He was tempted to throw the small stone which belonged to Annalise at Henry’s head and if the conversation annoyed him more, he would throw the big rock which belonged to him. The only thing stopping him from throwing either one already was the fact he would have to get rid of Henry’s body when he was finished if the force of the stone ended up killing him.
"No, my daughter is also wrong. I have given her an ear full for what she did and she is not leaving home without an escort. I had to fire a good coachman because of this. You don’t seem to-"
"If you light that cigar in my study, you will find yourself on fire," Rafael warned.
He did not smoke and he did not allow it in his study or bedroom. It was rare that he made an exception for anyone in these places. If Henry wanted to smoke as they spoke, this conversation would need to be had outside so his study would not be left with that awful smell.
Henry stopped in the middle of lighting his cigar. He never saw why Rafael had to be different from all the other men who smoked and go as far as to make him stop now when he desperately needed his cigar. "I will respect your wishes since I sit in your home. I am not pleased that you placed my daughter over your shoulder and shoved her into your carriage. I am also aware of the fact that you threatened to place her in your dungeon. I hope that was something my daughter misunderstood."
"She did not. I planned to place her there and depending on how she behaves in the future, she shall find my dungeon to be her new home," Rafael answered, admitting to what he said.
Henry squashed the cigar in his hands thanks to his anger. "My daughter is not just anyone who can treat and speak to as you please. She is a Harrison."
"I don’t give a fuck if she were the queen. Your daughter resorted to trying to undress herself so she could claim that I had ruined her. Her final attempt to get me to marry her. Then she failed to leave my manor when I told her to. I was free to deal with her how I see fit, just like I am free to deal with you now. If you are here for an apology, you won’t get it from me, a servant, and even a horse if they could speak," Rafael said.
Henry’s failure to see that what happened was Delilah’s doing was the reason she did something so foolish. She knew her parents would cover it up and look to get him to feel sorry for her. Paint him to be the villain so he would look to have her near him again as an apology.
Delilah and her parents had misunderstood him. He did not go around claiming to be a good person. They didn’t know him well enough as they thought to know that he could be cruel in his reactions to the stupid things the people around him did.
"You cannot threaten me and look to get away with it. You fail to see the shame that you would bring on my family if word of how you kicked my daughter out of your home were to get out and-"
"I am sure that me letting the town know that your daughter was crazy enough to undress before me while we were alone would be what shames your family. I have been generous enough to not speak of it to anyone other than my mother. Though I have been kind to not unleash my anger for the shit your daughter did, I have to deal with you and your wife approaching me or my mother to speak of my actions. Are you stupid?" Rafael asked, wanting an honest answer.
Henry’s anger rose with Rafael’s disrespect, but there was nothing much he could do as he sat in Rafael’s home. He had hoped that with how much time had passed, Rafael would have calmed down by now and looked to find a solution for both sides to move past this and be as they once were.
He still wanted Delilah to marry Rafael so he could find himself closer to being around the king. No matter his wealth, he never had the chance to be near the king or be invited to the palace. Being the father-in-law of Rafael would grant him a better opportunity to enter the palace.
"I am not here to argue with you," Henry sighed.
"Really? You make it hard to tell," Rafael said.
"I came here so early because I wanted to end this growing feud between our families before it could get out of hand. I apologise for what my daughter has done. I do not like what you did in reaction to what she started, but I am tired of trying to make you understand the fault in your actions. I was told that this started over a maid. Bring her here," Henry said, his tone sounding like he had given Rafael an order.
The room was silent for a few seconds until Rafael’s laughter was heard.
