Chapter 112: Spoiled (1)

Chapter 112: Spoiled (1)

"It is a small town, about four days ride from here named Nox after a great lord who lived there a long time ago. We don’t actually live in the town. We live in the mountain area so we have space to take care of our animals and we normally ride into town when we are ready to sell an animal or vegetables we have grown. Did I do something wrong already?" Annalise asked, feigning a panicked look.

Should she have knocked hard enough to break the door or stomped on the floor as she entered his room? Why couldn’t he just accept the fact he was more tired than he realised and that was why he failed to notice her right away?

"No," Rafael said to stop her from worrying. It was a matter of him failing to be more aware. "Continue what you were doing."

"Yes, young master. Perhaps you are in need of more rest. You have only recently returned from a long trip and you are already back to training your knights. You need at least one good day of laying around on your bed for your body to go back to normal. Then you won’t be so tired to not hear when I come to you. You look as though you need to sleep some more right now," Annalise said.

Surely the kingdom could grant the commander of the Callahan knights a day for him to rest.

"I am fine," Rafael replied, palming his face as he let the sleepiness leave his body.

Contrary to what others believed, he had been getting plenty of rest. He went to bed right after dinner and woke up just in time for breakfast. The most he tired himself out was for a few hours he trained with the knights. The rest of the day he was in his study looking over letters from the palace, border, or knights from other towns.

Annalise didn’t try to push it any further and went back to open the window she had purposely closed before it would be too hot in the room. "I will prepare your bath shortly," she said. She would give him time to fully wake up before she did so.

When she was finished tying the curtains to stop them from blowing around because of the wind, she came to Rafael’s bed to pick up the shirt he wore to dinner last night. In her eyes, it was perfectly clean to wear again before another wash since he had only worn it for less than an hour at the table and then inside his bedroom, but as Mavis instructed, it needed to be washed.

It was fine for Mavis to say they needed to wash every bit of clothing Rafael touched because she wasn’t the one that did not have to be constantly washing.

Annalise picked up the shirt and started to fold it so she could then place it in the basket another maid would come to collect later.

A knock on Rafael’s door disrupted the silence in the room. Annalise placed the shirt back down and went to the door to see who had come to speak to Rafael. She crossed her fingers, hoping it was not Logan once more. His presence last night had done enough.

"Good morning Edwin," Annalise said after she opened the door and found the butler standing before her.

"Good morning. Is the young master awake?" He asked.

"He is," Annalise replied, looking at Rafael who started to get up off the bed.

"Please inform him that Henry Harrison is at the gates. Please let me know his response," Edwin said.

’Harrison?’ Annalise thought. If she remembered correctly, that was Delilah’s last name and so Henry was her father.

"Excuse me. Young master, there is a Henry Harrison for you at the gates-"

"Tell him to get the hell away from my gates," Rafael replied, not interested in speaking to Henry now when he did not even have his breakfast. What was going through Henry’s head for him to be visiting so early?

Annalise folded her lips. Surely, he could think of a better response. "He is Lady Delilah’s father, isn’t he? Wouldn’t he be able to get her to stop what she is planning?"

Rafael stood up from his bed. "You are not speaking to him or anyone from her family."

"I do not plan on speaking to her or her family, but wouldn’t it end quickly if you speak to her father? I am not trying to tell you what to do. I am only concerned about how long I might be targeted," Annalise said.

The only downside to Rafael speaking to Henry was that he might stop her from being his maid if his conversation went well. However, Delilah was one big headache just waiting to happen and Annalise had too many things to worry about already to have to be looking out for what the heartbroken woman would do to her.

"You are safe as long as you are by my side and here in the manor, but I will speak to him if it will ease your mind. You will owe me something if the conversation goes nowhere. Why do you look surprised?" Rafael questioned, coming to stand in front of her.

She averted her eyes for three seconds before looking at him again because she did not want to lose their little game.

"I do not see what I would owe you. Do you not want to stop worrying about Delilah? Speaking to her father might free you of having to worry," Annalise said, not seeing where she fit in to owe him something.

"I prefer to have a quiet morning where the only people who annoy me are the knights. I wanted to send Henry away because of how this conversation will go, but you want me to speak with him. Should my morning be ruined, shouldn’t you take responsibility?" Rafael asked.

"I do not think so, but since you are the young master I will say yes," Annalise answered. Whatever she would owe him could not be so bad.

Though she did not want to owe him anything, she might have done the same if she was in his position with someone asking her to speak to someone she knew would only anger her.

"Stop addressing me as a young master," Rafael said, finding the two words to be more irritating now than ever. "I have told all of you time and time again that I am not a young master. You can address me as Sir Rafael or just Rafael. The latter is what I prefer."

"You would need to tell that to the butler and head maid. They are the ones who instructed us to refer to you as the young master. I might get in trouble for addressing you as anything other than that if they do not know you have given me permission to address you as Rafael," Annalise replied.

Using his first name when he was not around was already a dangerous game if Mavis were to overhear you.

"Then I will speak to them after breakfast. Stay here. I do not want Henry to get a good look at you," Rafael said, going to get the shirt Annalise had folded. "You should hope that this conversation goes well so you will not owe me."
