Chapter 111: Not possible (2)
Since Rafael was claiming to not be angered by her conversation with Logan, Annalise decided to move on from it before she did anger him by continuing to speak about it. As long as she had ended the first day on a positive note, she was satisfied.
"Why are you following me?" Rafael asked since Annalise continued to walk behind him. After her explanation of what happened between her and Logan, he expected she would leave him alone since there was nothing left for her to do. "Are you planning to sing me to sleep?"
"Of course not. I am to close the curtains for you and do any tasks you need to be done before you go to bed. I am following Mavis’s instructions," Annalise said. Everything she did had been on what Mavis or Edwin told her.
"She has been here for years and still does not understand me. You are finished for the day. Have dinner and rest right after. I do not need to leave the manor tomorrow, but you are to be at my door before breakfast. Do not stay up late and then you are not here when I wake up. I am expecting a second day that is better than the first," Rafael said, stopping in the middle of the hall so he could send her off. "Go on."
"I feel as though I am being told by my father not to stay up late with friends. I will be here before you wake up in the morning. Have a good night," Annalise bid him goodbye. She could jump for joy that she was finally free of being by his side for long hours.
"You are doing a terrible job of hiding that you are pleased to be finished for the day. Good night Annalise," Rafal said, shaking his head as he turned to leave. She had to be from another world since there was no one like her.
She was like the birthday gifts his mother would wrap up for him. Pretty on the outside with a surprise waiting for him. The fact that Annalise’s parents had another child concerned him. The two must have had a hard time raising Annalise and her brother. It was hard for him to manage having to deal with Annalise.
Rafael imagined that as a child, surrounded by farm animals, there was so much for her to pull pranks on someone with. It was good that she was not ready to marry anyone. She was saving her future husband from his awaited heart attack from what he would find in his bed if he were to piss off Annalise.
Rafael entered his quiet room. It turned lively only when Annalise or Edwin would come inside. The windows were wide open with the curtains blowing to the ceiling because of the high wind. Instead of going to shut the window and pulling the curtains so the sun would not be on his face in the morning, he went to his bed to lie down.
The cold air would prevent him from sweating in the middle of the night.
Rafael pulled his shirt over his head and placed it on the small drawer beside his bed. He then lay on his bed with his right hand covering his face. He still felt like a fool for being bothered by something he misunderstood.
Whatever was to happen between Annalise and Logan did not concern him, but he could not get rid of the slight irritation when he thought of her telling Logan that she loved him.
"It is not possible," Rafael said.
There should be no way in this world that he had started to become intrigued by Annalise, more than her being his maid, and he was showing jealousy. He had never had such thoughts or feelings for any of his servants. It was a line he was determined to not cross to avoid trouble in the future should the relationship turn sour.
"I was merely surprised to hear her say it," Rafael said, but even then he could not escape hearing the lies in his words.
Annalise was different. She was able to humor him and he found himself enjoying his conversations with her. Sooner or later, this curiosity he had for her would vanish like all the other things he had once been curious about. Once he got used to her antics, he would no longer be intrigued by her.
He knew that it would so that he would not make Annalise being his maid uncomfortable for her.
Or him.
Rafael found it hard to sleep as he tried not to think of what happened tonight. It did not help that Edagr’s words about Annalise filled his mind. Luck was on his side that Tobias might not be coming to the town so the foolish king would not see Annalise by his side and assumed there was something between them.
He forced himself to fall asleep, even if he had to be haunted by the ghost of men who he had killed when he was at war. Having those men show up in his dreams to remind him of how many lives he had taken was better than the internal battle he was facing right now.
Somehow, Rafael was able to drift off to sleep after many curses under his breath for failing to do it at first.
The sound of something dropping on the floor alerted Rafael. His eyes flew open as he sat up and he looked around the room to find the source of the noise. Unlike the dark room he fell asleep in what felt like only an hour ago, the room was now bright as a new day was upon the town.
Rafael was once again puzzled by the sight of Annalise in his bedroom. This time she was closing the windows. The curtains were already tied with a string to stop them from blowing around. He had not heard her when she entered the room again. If not for her dropping something, she would go unnoticed in his bedroom.
Rafael could not say he was drunk or in deep sleep and that was why he had not noticed her. He slept no differently than he did other nights when he would hear Edwin coming inside his room.
"How are you coming in here without me noticing you?" He asked.
"Good morning," Annalise greeted him first. "I knocked on the door and even said good morning when I entered, but you did not respond to me. You did not even stir when I walked inside. Judging from your face, it did look like you were having a bad dream. Maybe that was why you did not notice me? You were too occupied, dealing with your nightmares."
Annalise made sure to make some noise when she entered the room this time. She couldn’t help it that he had not noticed her. Maybe he wasn’t as alert as he thought he was or she was just too skilled at sneaking around to force herself to be loud.
He did look like he was having a bad dream when she came closer to the bed to see him. She purposely pulled in the windows to make a loud sound to wake him and it worked.
Rafael palmed his face, trying to make sense of what was happening to him these days. His dreams could not have made him ignore the sound of someone in his room. "Where did you say you came from again, Annalise?"
