Chapter 110: Not possible (1)

Annalise followed Rafael to the dining room. His pace was much faster than it was when they walked through the town, but she was able to keep up with him. Her first day as Rafael’s maid was going well, but then she just had to anger him by having a conversation with Logan when she was meant to be focusing on Rafael.

’It is not like I wanted to speak to Logan. He came to annoy me,’ Annalise thought.

It was not fair for Rafael to be angry with her when this was Logan’s fault.

Annalise went off to the side as Rafael sat down at the table. They somehow managed to be on time so she could avoid Mavis scolding her for bringing him down late. The table was already set with Rafael’s food for the night. Since it was only him, there wasn’t much food placed on the table besides small plates of meat, vegetables, and other food to fill one person.

"Annalise."

Annalise looked away from Rafael to Mavis who whispered her name.

"Pour his drink," Mavis mouthed.

Annalise nodded her head and walked to the table to ask Rafael what he preferred from the selection placed on the table. "Young master, what would you like to drink?" She asked.

"Young master?" Annalise asked again after no response from him. It was impossible for him to not have heard her. Was he truly angry with her? Over something so small?

"Water," Rafael answered.

Annalise sighed in relief that he answered her since Mavis and Edwin were both present and she did not want neither one to think she had done something to upset Rafael. She concluded that he might have been lost in thought and did not hear her the first time.

After spending almost a whole day with him, she did not place him as a petty person who would not speak to her simply because of her conversation with Logan.

Annalise picked up the jug filled with water and went back to Rafael’s side to pour it into his glass. She hoped his dinner would go by quickly so that she could enjoy her own dinner and share out the treats to her friends. She needed to ask Jonah to warm them up so they wouldn’t be so cold.

Annalise placed the jug down and stepped back to where she was a moment ago. The water was placed for Rafael to drink, but he did not pick it up. ’That is why we should wait until he asks me for something to drink.’

Rafael ate his food in silence like he did every other night, but for some reason, there was something which made dinner not pleasant. Nothing had changed for him to be so displeased. He was lost in thought trying to figure it out and then Annalise’s voice was heard behind him. He was a fool to purposely not answer her the first time.

It had been so long since he felt this annoyed by something he shouldn’t be annoyed by. Nothing had happened to him for him to be annoyed, but he was. He was since he had opened the door and heard Annalise speaking to Logan.

Their conversation did not concern him and he knew that Logan had feelings for Annalise. Logan was always a charmer when it came to women, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise that he was able to get Annalise to confess to him. Still, Rafael thought she disliked Logan and wanted nothing to do with him. It was hard not to see the frown she wore whenever Logan showed up around her.

Rafael stopped in the middle of cutting his meat. He had to be crazy to be sitting down at his dining table, thinking of Annalise and Logan of all people. "Ha," he put down his knife and covered his face with his right hand.

"Young master," Edwin said, approaching Rafael since he was behaving strangely. He looked at Annalise for an explanation only to have her shrug her shoulders.

"I am fine, Edwin. I just had unpleasant thoughts. Give a bit of wine. The usual," Rafael said. He needed it to help take his mind off of what was irritating him.

"Right away," Edwin replied, leaving to get the wine quickly. He was determined to get Rafael out of the foul mood he was in. He wondered what it could be to have Rafael so lost in thought. Rafael was fine when he checked on him a little while before dinner.

Annalise looked down at her feet to pass the time while Rafael continued to eat without saying anything else. He did not call on her or Edwin to have more water or wine poured. He just ate quietly and then stood up when he was finished.

Annalise followed him back to his room so she could close the curtains for him or do any task before she would be done for the night.

"I don’t love Logan," Annalise started to get straight to the point. She had to make this clear so no one could talk about her being in love with Logan. The only thing she wanted to do with Logan was kill him and it pained her that she could not. "I was not having a pleasant conversation with him while working as your maid. I was trying to send him away."

"By confessing to a man who has feelings for you? How was that supposed to send him away?" Rafael questioned. Her thinking seemed to be backward. You do not confess to a man who holds feelings for you. It will only make him chase you more now that he knew you were interested.

"I wasn’t thinking it would really send him away. He never leaves when I tell him to. I thought he was only intrigued by me because I have not quickly fallen for him. So I told him that I loved him, but I did not mean it. As you can see, he accepted it even though it was not from my heart. I have started to question the common sense of your knights," Annalise said.

She was starting to question how the Callahan was a formidable threat when they had someone like Logan with them.

"I thought I was doing really well today and it seemed like my conversation with Logan put an end to that since you were angry. I am sorry. I will try to do better tomorrow," Annalise promised, certain that tomorrow would be far better than today.

Rafael stopped just as they reached the top of the stairs. "You did not need to apologise for having a conversation with Logan. You do not need to be mute when you were simply standing outside of my door. You did nothing wrong," he answered.

"It is good to know that I did not mess, but then, can I ask why it seems like you were annoyed when you caught us talking? And you seemed to ignore me at dinner. If you were angered by it, it is fine. I will work harder tomorrow and not make the mistake again-"

"I said you did nothing wrong," Rafael interjected, tired of hearing her promise to work hard when the problem was with him getting upset over a small confession that did not mean something. "I am not annoyed by what you did."

He was annoyed that he thought so much about it.
