Chapter 139: Ember Dust

REAGAN POV

A knock sounded, interrupting my thoughts. I answered without bothering to look up because I knew who it was. "Come on in!"

Nikolai opened the door and stepped inside. He walked in with his usual confidence and I could feel his eyes on me the entire time as he yanked a seat and lowered himself into it. I looked up only to find him watching with an intense look on my face.

I looked back at the papers I was busy studying and then I looked back up at him when I saw he was yet to say anything which meant he must have been brought with some news and by the look on his face, it wasn’t good news at all.

"Alright, what is it?" I demanded.

Nikolai motioned his head towards me. "You first, you look a bit worried!" He stated rather than a question.

I looked up at him before I looked away from him but I didn’t bother to say any otherwise. "Of course I’m worried." I admitted, "The whole thing with Dahlia and her family is just one big screw up and I can’t help but notice how it’s taking a toll on her." I finally looked up as I rubbed a hand over my face, "She barely eats, barely sleeps and I know she is sneaking out."

"To go and be the black knight?" Nikolai’s voice dropped to a whisper.

I shook my head, heaving out a sigh as I leaned back against my seat. "No, no, no, no, it’s not that. I mean I did think about it but it’s not that. With a baby along the way I do not think she will be into such activities, so I assume she is meeting with the rebels."

"That is probably her next move, siding with the rebels ever since she threatened to kill her father." Nikolai stated, "And you know she probably wouldn’t have that idea if you just told her the truth, because I have a feeling you two would make a great team!"

I glared at Nikolai who just continued to stare at me smirking and if he wasn’t my friend, I would have punched him in the face. Swallowing I grabbed the papers I was reading and shoved them inside the drawer. "Like I said, not knowing would keep her safe."

"Yeah, so you say." He said and I just gave him another glare to which he grinned at.

"Alright do you actually have news for me or you are just going to sit there and be a smart ass all day?"

Nikolai frowned as if he was thinking about it for moment. "You know that could be so much fun."

"Nikolai!"

Chuckling, Nikolai sat up straight when I growled at him in response. "Whatever man but you are right, I do have some news!" He said and he reached into his waist bringing out some pouch. "It wasn’t easy but I finally do got some nasty information and I will tell you one thing Sigurd is one big bag of dick and if I had my way, I’d like to slice and dice him into a couple million pieces, stuff him inside a sack and then find some old witch to hex the bag and then, I will wrap him up in iron chains and throw him into the ocean!"

I frowned as I stared at Nikolai who had a look of rage on his face. "Yeah, that was weirdly descriptive!" I said as I reached for the pouch, "And what is this?"

"Why don’t you open it and see for yourself?"

I reached inside the pouch, my hand grasping some kind of glass. Pulling them out, I placed them on the table. Inside of them was some golden yellow powder but it also looked a little bit like glitter. Something about it looked oddly familiar, like I’ve seen it before but I don’t really know where I had seen it but I can tell it was something I had seen before.

Scowling, I picked up one of the vials that contained the golden dust spinning it in my palm squinting my eyes at it with curiosity. The golden dust shone faintly in the candlelight, capturing my attention and the way it swirled in the vile was almost hypnotic, like it was calling out to me. "What is this?"

"Ember dust!" Nikolai jaw’s clenched as he responded, "Or eye of the tiger like the local calls it."

I arched a brow up at him, "Eye of the tiger?" I repeated still staring at the vial. I mean I can get why it is called eye of the tiger and all of that but that doesn’t explain what it does, "And what exactly does it do?"

"Oh nothing in particular just that it’s an highly alchemical drug that had been conjured up from the west, quite popular amongst the Kahkil’s...."

"The Kahskils? We don’t deal with the kashkils." I interrupted Nikolai who nodded his head at me.

"Yeah, I probably would have had that same thought if that old bastard didn’t set them off on us two weeks ago!" Nikolai said and I arched a brow up at him, "Sigurd the old crone has been buying and importing it through ships into Iravia and the purpose of this drug it to enhance combats. It’s said that just a small dose can make even a baby take down a grown ass man but when in consumed in maximal amounts..." Nikolai heaved out a sigh. "Well let’s just say what it makes people do, the story ain’t pretty. It makes people mindless, makes them feel so much rage it practically turns them into beasts before it consumes them entirely."

I cocked my head at him, "And what exactly has this got anything to do with...." I trailed off as Nikolai looked at me with a pointed look, "You think he is feeding Evie with this?"

"There hasn’t been any solid evidence because it’s hard to get intel in the castle but I know that he is feeding Evie that and do you want to guess what a major side effects of the ember dust is?"

My hand closed around the vial tightly in anger, "Memory Loss!" I said starting to remember where I had known the drug from.

"Bingo!"
