THE Knight's Hidden Princess -
Chapter 138: The Benefactor
Chapter 138: The Benefactor
The only thing I could see was darkness, so I had to rely on someone’s other senses to navigate. I was being led into some house of some sort and I almost tripped a few times but I was roughly yanked backwards before I could stumbled. I gritted my teeth, refraining from speaking. The ground under my boots was smooth and the air was heavy with the scent of wet wood and also of ale, lots of ale and if I smelled closely, I think I could perceive the stench of vomit in the air.
I heard a chair squeal against the floor and then before I knew it I, a heavy hand descended on my shoulder forcing me to sit. Then the huge sack that had been placed on my head was suddenly removed and I had to close my eyes at the brightness that invaded my sight.
I was right after all, we were in a tavern! I thought as soon as my eyes became used to the sight in front of me. The room was dimly lit with dancing lanterns that were placed on the hewn wooden walls. The stench of stale ale and unclean bodies clung to the air now, obscuring the scent of the remains of some left over that was on a nearby table.
There were some new addition to the merry group. Some men and women sat in their seat, hands casually resting on their cups as they accessed me with nothing but suspicion in their gaze, they didn’t trust me which was good.
"So now we are bringing her to this meetings?" One of the women said and I recognized her as one of the group of women who always wove baskets for some of the fishermen. "Isn’t it enough that we get to see her at the camp, now we have to see her here too?"
"Calm yourself Maya," One of the men said, "Let’s hear what the reason is!"
"It’s fucking ridiculous is what it is!" Dwayne responded with a huff before he went to go and sit at the bar while pouring himself a cup of ale and at that moment I envied him.
What a relief it must be to be able to drown your frustration in ale! I thought warily before I turned to face the group of angry people in the room.
Lars yanked out a chair and set it in front of me the opposite way, he then lowered himself down on the seat. "Okay princess," He drawled out, "You’ve exactly a minute to give me a valid reason why I shouldn’t toss you back into the night."
A valid reason, weren’t this people listening to what I was saying? "It’s like I said in the woods, I need your help."
"Yes you did princess." Hansel said leaning forward, "But you also mentioned something about the black knight?"
Few murmurs went round the room at that and they were all casting me curious looks, seems I now have their attention now!
"Yes, I did." I affirmed, "The black knight needs your help!"
The murmur even grew louder at my words and I could see the people share glances among each other, a skeptical look on their faces wondering if they should believe what I say or not.
"And we are supposed to believe that you know the black knight?" Lars asked me.
I shrugged at him in disbelief. "I know him, some might even call us partners!"
"She lies!" Someone yelled from the back and a murmur of agreement went around.
Lars turned to look at the person who had spoken before he turned to look back at me. "Yeah, you see they don’t believe."
Smiling at him, I cocked my head at him in response. I could see the surprise in Lars face though he tried to hide it but it was there. I leaned back in my seat and crossed my legs as I relaxed against the chair feeling more like a princess than a captive.
"I know you don’t believe me, rightfully so." I said still smiling before I leaned forward, "After all I do know what you are thinking. You all are probably wondering what the black knight is doing with the likes of me? She is a royal, the black knight shouldn’t be working with the likes of her, he should have killed her when he had the chance. I’m sure you are all thinking that."
"I know I definitely thought about the last part."
I shot Dwayne a glare but I didn’t say anything. Turning back to look back at Lars, I arched a brow up at him. "But you see, the question you should all be asking is who sponsors the black knight’s resoursces?"
"You?" Hansel asked me.
I flicked my hair to the side. "The horses, the carriages, weapons, how did you think he got them? And also how is it he manages to infiltrates high security areas without being caught? The black knight isn’t just some rebel operating on scraps, he is quite smart and manages his operation very well, so how do you think he does that?"
"Because you are his benefactor." Lars stated simply, realization dawning on his face.
I shrugged at him in response. "That’s what I just said. Now are you going to help me?"
There was a stunned silence for a minute. The Lars cleared his throat before he stood up from the chair. "You see that is a very good one princess. Your story is great and all but as for that help we won’t be offering it?"
Now that caught me by surprise. Frowning I gazed up at Lars not understanding his refusal. After everything I had said, he was still going to refuse me. "Why?" I couldn’t help but ask him.
"There might be some truth in what you say, hells there might be some people who believe you but you do know we are going to need to see some proof if you want our help."
"Proof? What proof?"
"The black knight!" Nick deadpanned, "If you want our help, you are going to need to bring the black knight here!"
