Chapter 38: The Female Knight Commander

Stormholt Manor

Alaric kept pacing back and forth, waiting for the physician to finish examining Eve. She got a few bruises after she was thrown out of the carriage.

"She almost died! I ordered you to keep her safe! What were you doing out there?" Alaric’s stern cold voice sent shivers down their spines.

The four knights who escorted them were kneeling before Alaric, trying to reflect on their mistakes. Alaric reprimanded them for not being able to protect Eve during the attack of dire wolves.

"Forgive us, our Lord," they uttered in unison.

"Don’t let this happen again in the future!" Alaric said through gritted teeth, staring down at them with his seething gray eyes.

"We shall see to it, our Lord! We won’t make the same mistake."

Alaric rubbed the space in his eyebrows before signaling the four knights to stand up.

"About the thing you’ve witnessed in Willowshade Forest, I ask that you keep it to yourselves. No one must know about what happened. Don’t ever mention the possibility of my wife being a Beast Tamer to anyone. Do you understand?" Alaric commanded his knights.

"Understood, our Lord. We shall speak of this to no one," they responded in unison, reassuring Alaric.

Alaric wanted to keep Eve safe. If the royal family and the other kingdoms discovered Eve’s rare talent for taming beasts, they might take advantage of her and might be forced to go to a battle against her will.

During times of war, the various kingdoms sought out beast tamers because their rare talents were invaluable to the kingdom’s military forces.

Beast tamers could command and deploy various tamed beasts, using them as strong weapons and alternative military forces, therefore reducing the need to send human warriors into the battlefield against enemy forces.

"You may leave now." Alaric dismissed the four knights.

At that moment, the physician stepped out of Eve’s chamber. Alaric hastily approached him.

"How’s my wife?" he asked, his deep concern evident.

"General Stormholt, she only had minor wounds and bruises. Fortunately, she didn’t get any broken bones. Overall, she is fine. Just let her rest and sleep to replenish her energy. I’ll prescribe her some tonics. Just ensure she will drink it after her meal once she wakes up." The town physician instructed Alaric.

"I understand."

When the old physician left, Alaric entered the chamber. His heart felt at ease after seeing Eve not seriously injured. He was scared to death when he thought he couldn’t save her.

Alaric quietly sat down on the edge of her bed. His cold expression softened at the sight of her sleeping figure. His hand instinctively reached out, gently caressing her face.

"Princess Eve, whenever you are in danger, I always come too late. But fortunately, you have some unique luck," Alaric softly mumbled, smiling bitterly at that thought.

"My Lord," the servant called out to him outside the chamber. "Your knight commanders are here to see you."

"Tell them to wait for me in the Drawing Room," Alaric responded.

Alaric stared at Eve’s face for one last time before he stood up, leaving the chamber. He quickly proceeded to the drawing room to meet his knight commanders.

Upon entering the room, the two knight commanders knelt and bowed to pay their respects. Alaric acknowledged their gesture with a wave of his hand, signaling them to rise.

Caleb was his right-hand commander while the woman standing next to him was Sera, Alaric’s left-hand commander. Sera was the only female knight in the 5th Battalion. Sera and Alaric grew up together in the slums before becoming full-fledged warriors.

"My lord, is everything alright? We heard that you were attacked by a pack of dire wolves while you were on your way here," Sera asked Alaric with concern.

"Yes. Everything is fine," he plainly responded. "I summon you here because I have an important task for both of you," Alaric spoke with frankness as he didn’t beat around the bush.

Caleb and Sera exchanged glances with one another. They could sense the seriousness of this matter.

"What do we need to do, general?" Caleb asked him politely.

Alaric shifted his gaze to him. "Caleb, I want you to form a team. You have to catch those bandits who tried to kill my wife. They tried to frame me, making my wife believe that I sent them. I need to find out who is the mastermind behind them. You must bring them to me at all costs."

Meeting Alaric’s sharp gaze, Caleb could only bob his head. He could tell that the young general was furious.

"We will do our best to capture them, my Lord," Sera chimed in.

"Sera, you have a different task from Caleb," Alaric said matter-of-factly, correcting her wrong assumption.

Caleb pursed his lips, trying to hold his laughter while Sera glared at Caleb in return.

"What is my special task, my lord?" Sera asked him expectantly.

"I ask you to stay here in Stormholt Manor," Alaric said, making Sera’s eyes lit up with excitement.

’I would love to stay here with you, my lord,’ she thought to herself.

Caleb glanced at Sera meaningfully, sensing her joy and excitement. ’Hmm. She is too obvious. She only acts femininely in front of our general. I knew it. She definitely likes him.’

However, Sera’s happiness was cut short when she heard Alaric’s next words.

"I’d like you to accompany my wife and pretend to be her personal maid. Your task is to keep an eye on her all the time and protect her. But don’t let her know that you are my knight commander. I want you to befriend her."

Sera was at a loss for words. She didn’t expect to receive that kind of task from Alaric.

’What?! A knight commander turning into a female servant! No way! And what did he say? I have to befriend his wife?!’ Sera subconsciously clenched her fists. But her expression remained neutral, concealing her displeasure.

"Will you take this task?" Alaric’s voice snapped her out of her deep thoughts.

"Y-Yes, my Lord! I’m accepting this task. I’ll never disobey you," she replied.

Caleb scratched his face as he watched Sera helplessly. ’Haha! I know she hates the task, but she couldn’t refuse our general’s request.’
