Chapter 304: Chapter 304- I Don’t Think So
Sol stood rooted to the spot and watched the black smoke rising into the air with a dark expression on his face. With the black smoke leaving residue on his face, this statement became both figurative and literal for Sol.
"Damn it."
Sol said annoyed as he wiped off his face. However, he quickly calmed himself down and went to clean out the black sludge from the cauldron.
Abdu who was cleaning himself after that ordeal with intense flames, glanced at Sol before asking.
"What happened."
Slightly frustrated with himself, Sol said.
"You said I wouldn’t be able to control the runes as easily as I would be able to with my Soul Energy. But even when you gave me a clear warning, I completely ignored it. The timing for putting in the fourth herbs was off because I couldn’t increase the flames to the required temperature. As a result, the herb took too long to dissolve and threw the mixture inside off balance, thus causing the batch of pills to be ruined."
When Abdu heard that, he nodded.
"As long as you can find you went wrong you can make sure you don’t do it again."
"Hm, I won’t."
Sol said with a nod as he reheated the cauldron and started the concocting process all over again. This time he took his delay of changing the temperature into account and made sure he didn’t make any errors for the fifth and sixth ingredients.
With all of the ingredients successfully melting, now came the three other important steps.
First was mixture, second was formation, and third was release.
Sol had memorized the method of mixture for this pill, but now that he made a mistake despite that in the first three steps, he didn’t dare be negligent.
His hand stretched over the cauldron and his wood Aether Energy from his acupoints flowed from his body into it.
Using his Wood Aether Energy, Sol mixed the melted ingredients inside three times clockwise and six times counterclockwise.
During this process he allowed his Wood Aether Energy to permeate the mixture and stimulate the ingredients. By doing this it ensured that the ingredients didn’t lose most of their properties.
Sol also did this during the formation process of the pill.
During this process, Sol covered the cauldron with the lid while his Wood Aether Energy repeated the mixture steps.
If Sol was successful, then six medicinal pills should be forming right now.
Sol made sure to inject more of his Wood Aether Energy inside.
This was why alchemists with Wood Aether Energy are usually more successful in Alchemy. No matter what plant it is, even if it contains other elements, one would be able to use their Wood Aether Energy to increase the purity of a medicinal pill.
Well, aside from medicinal plants containing Fire Aether Energy properties.
For each Tier of medicinal pills, the pills were separated into four grades based on their purity.
A pill with a purity below 20% was a Low-Grade pill. A pill with a purity above 20% but below 60% was a Medium-Grade pill, and a pill with a purity above 60% and below 90% was a High-Grade pill.
As for a Forth-Grade pill, this was a pill that exceeded 90% purity. Though refining a medicinal pill with this level of purity was considered to be extremely hard.
After a few minutes of mixing, Sol timed the pill formula exactly and executed the final step, the release.
With one swift motion, Sol lifted the cover of the cauldron, and the six pills immediately flew into the air.
In truth, this part of the process was only for theatrics.
Sol leapt up and with his Internal Wood Aether Energy circulating in his palm he caught three pills in each hand.
They were about the size of a newborn baby’s fist.
After Sol landed, he looked at the pills and sighed dejectedly.
Even though he was successful in refining all six pills like the instructions said, four of these were only slightly above 20% in purity with two below that.
Sol scratched his head and spoke.
"Is this what my skills amount to? If I didn’t have my Wood Aether Energy to supplement the mixture and formation process, these pills might not even be a Low-Grade Tier 3 pill.
"Where did you go wrong?"
Abdu asked as he walked over.
Sol turned to look at him and shook his head.
"Honestly, Little Abdu, I don’t know."
Abdu shook his head and then said.
"Stop treating Alchemy as Martial Arts. You can improve your Martial Arts by seeking stronger obstacles, but Alchemy is not the same."
Sol hearing this forced a smile and nodded in understanding.
"So, you’re saying I shouldn’t have started with trying to concoct Tier 3 medicinal pills."
Sol looked down at the six pills in his hands before he opened his mouth and casually swallowed them all. Though before the pills could enter his stomach his Innate Dharma swayed and extracted the pure Wood Aether Energy from them. This energy assimilated with Sol’s Internal Aether Energy, but the rest of the pill’s ingredients, which were the most important part of the pill, was completely discarded along with their slight impurity.
With a burp the impurities escaped Sol’s mouth in a cloud of white fog. After whipping his mouth, he said.
"Alright, let’s start from the beginning and work my way up to Tier 3 pills."
As Sol was moving back to the cauldron, Abdu asked a question that had been plaguing his mind.
"Brat, let me ask you something. If one can only cultivate one element in this era, how can an alchemist with a Fire Innate Dharma thingy concoct a Wood-type pill like what you’re concocting?"
Sol paused and then said.
"Little Abdu, our Alchemy is specialized. Someone with a Wood-type Innate Dharma like me will never try and concoct Aether Gathering pills for a cultivator cultivating Fire Aether Energy, and vice-versa."
When Abdu heard that, he looked at Sol as if he had just grown two heads and four arms.
After a moment, Abdu shook his head and said.
"How preposterous, I can’t even imagine how Alchemy can make any improvements if this is the case. Back in my day, there were no Innate Dharma thingies so alchemists weren’t regulated to one element. They could connect any pill they wanted. The same went for cultivators, they could cultivate whatever element they want or all six if they had the talent."
"Really? Then the Alchemy techniques back must have been completely different from ours."
Abdu scoffed.
"Not only were they different, but they were far superior to this Era’s."
Sol paused before shaking his head.
"I don’t think so."
"You don’t? Is it not obvious if an alchemist is regulated to one element the overall Alchemy World would suffer greatly?"
