Chapter 86: Chapter 85 - Controlled Mind
Caliste glanced at everyone around him with pure disdain in his eyes. He could not believe that his own mother and sister would ever turn their backs on him.
He gritted his teeth as he continued to look them in the eyes, struggling to resist the growing envy of putting that sword right inside their chests. He wasn’t sure why he was thinking such things, but before he could even ask himself, the thoughts disappeared from his mind altogether.
"Quick, form a circle around him," Ava said to the others.
Everyone listened, as they could clearly tell that something was weird about this whole situation.
Caliste was acting way too differently than before.
Liana, who was currently inside Caliste’s mind, was also realizing that something was definitely wrong about all this. She wasn’t sure why, but she could feel that the purity entering Caliste’s mind was not all that positive; it seemed to corrupt him in a way.
But that’s when Liana remembered how that sword was created.
Excalibur was not a normal sword, but that was known by everyone. It was made to slay demons; everyone knew that, too. But that’s not what was most interesting. What made the sword one of a king was not only Thorin’s skills; it was also the way in which it was created.
Excalibur had been created by Thorin and the heavens themselves, who had decided to help the small group of heroes a long time ago, saying that they would need a sword to kill the Demon King; otherwise, they would never achieve their goal.
That’s what this sword was.
A creation of the heavens more than anything else.
And it seemed that now that Caliste had taken hold of that sword once more, the heavens were trying to control him from a distance, telling him to kill those around him. Liana had seen how he had killed Canna with a swift movement of his sword. There had not been the slightest hesitation.
But even then, she let it go since she knew that Caliste himself hated Canna.
What came afterward was not the same, however.
Liana had clearly seen just how much Caliste loved his new family, even if they were demons. However, with this sword in his hands, thoughts of killing them kept surging inside his mind simply because they were demons—nothing else. It was as if all the time he had spent with them had disappeared from his mind.
’Caliste! Wake up! The sword is controlling you!’ Liana shouted. But the sound of her voice never truly reached Caliste because the sword blocked all the noises coming from her.
"Caliste, think carefully about what you’re doing," Aleia said with a frown on her face. She couldn’t believe that her little brother was now pointing his weapon toward them.
"You think carefully about what you’re doing. I just removed an evil from the world, and you mourn him as if he were ever important. He was just a nasty demon. He deserved death. All demons in this world deserve death. They are the ones who created problems for the entire world."
Caliste’s mouth opened on its own, making everyone confused about what he was even spouting since it made no sense given his new identity.
"Come at me if you dare. But be warned that I will kill you if I wish to do so."
Caliste stood still in the middle of the circle as he tightened his hold on Excalibur, a sword that he would never let go of now that he had it in his grasp.
Ava looked at Aleia and Rachel, trying to send them a small signal, and with a quick nod of her head, they all moved at the same time, attacking him simultaneously. However, they weren’t trying to kill him; they just wanted to remove Excalibur from his hands. They were all sure that was the reason for this whole situation.
There had to be a reason why the Demon King asked his son to take hold of the sword.
Ava was the one who had this thought in the back of her mind. She knew that her husband never had good intentions. All he wanted was to have chaos in the world; peace was never something that interested him at all.
As soon as the signal was launched, Rachel formed an ice crystal over her head with one of her hands, and with the other, she formed ice around Caliste’s legs, making it impossible for him to move.
But the ice at his feet didn’t last long, as Caliste just broke out of it with sheer force.
"Hmpf. Nice try."
Aleia and Ava, on the other hand, dashed forward with frowns on their faces, their eyes on the sword.
The icicle that Rachel had formed also headed toward him at the same time.
Three simultaneous attacks.
And Rachel had managed to strengthen the ice at his feet during the time that the icicle traveled.
Caliste couldn’t even move as he was about to receive three attacks. If it were anyone apart from the Demon King, then this would be a defeat every single time.
But Caliste only smirked at the attempt as he closed his eyes, swinging his sword to the right, blocking the icicle with his blade before giving his attention to Ava, his mother.
"I told you that I would kill you if you got too close."
His sword was then swung down as Ava’s eyes widened, dodging the strike by moving backward.
There was now only Aleia, who Caliste needed to worry about, but she had already managed to get within arm’s reach of his body.
Instead of trying to take the sword from his hands, which was basically a mission impossible, Aleia decided to act upon another strategy; she wound up her fist and aimed straight at the back of his head. Before Caliste could even turn around, he was hit in the back of his head and fell unconscious right away.
Even Caliste hadn’t been able to resist three attacks coming at him simultaneously.
If he had been able to move, he could have done it. But with the ice at his feet, turning his body had been almost impossible, giving Aleia enough time and space to attack him.
Right as he fell unconscious, the sword slipped out of his hand, and Ava was the one who grabbed it right away without a second thought.
The same shine as earlier vanished almost instantly, and the sword seemed to return to normal. However, even as Ava held it, she could feel the sword trying to return to the hands of Caliste.
"J-Just what kind of sword is this? Why did it control the mind of my son?" She asked herself as the king’s adviser immediately came out of his hiding.
"We should lock up your son until we make sure that he’s returned to normal."
Ava looked at the king’s adviser and was originally mad at the suggestion, but she agreed since it only made sense to do so. After all, maybe the sword’s influence was still present and affecting him. They needed to make sure that it was gone before doing anything else.
"Fine. But be careful how you handle him."
More than a day passed since Caliste had lost consciousness. Ava and Aleia hadn’t left him for a second as they watched him sleep inside the cell, barely able to keep their eyes open.
"Just how hard did you hit him?" Ava asked with a frown.
Aleia just looked down, as this wasn’t the first time that her mother had asked the question. However, Aleia had just acted in the moment to save her brother; she hadn’t really thought about how hard she was supposed to hit her little brother.
But then, small movements could be seen as Caliste began slightly moving on his bed.
"Argh..."
He touched the back of his head as he slowly looked around.
"W-Wait... where am I?" Caliste frowned. "Are those the elven dungeons? Wasn’t I inside the Dwarven Territory?"
He was talking to himself as he turned around and was met with the faces of his mother and his sister.
Caliste’s gaze widened as a result.
"What are you two doing here?" he asked with a frown.
"You don’t remember what happened?" Ava asked with a slight frown as she could finally recognize the gaze of her son. It was loving and not hateful...
Caliste frowned. "I remember fighting against Canna... my brother, but then, not everything is clear. There’s like a part of my memories that is missing."
Ava slowly nodded. "Do you remember this sword?"
Ava revealed Excalibur to the eyes of her son.
"Yes... how do you have that? Did we manage to beat Canna?"
Ava clenched her jaw. "Not exactly. You killed him with this sword."
Caliste was getting more and more confused by the second. "I killed him? How?"
"With this very sword."
Ava took a few seconds and began explaining everything that happened.
