Chapter 84: Chapter 83 - The Chosen One
Caliste was no longer paying attention to anything surrounding him.
In his field of vision, he could only see Canna in front of him, and there was only a single thought in his mind. He was no longer thinking rationally; he was losing himself as the Death Mana continued to become stronger and stronger.
"CALISTE!"
Liana was trying to wake him up, but she couldn’t. She could only hear his thoughts repeating inside his mind over and over again.
’Kill... kill... kill...’
It was honestly quite disappointing to see Caliste acting this way. Liana had seen through his memories since his childhood in this new life, and she knew the hatred and how he had acted at first. He wanted to take revenge on everyone who had wronged him.
"I’LL KILL YOU!" he screamed at the top of his lungs, the hatred seeping through. His voice was on the verge of breaking because of it.
Liana, who was inside, could hear his thoughts, and she could also see through his very eyes what was happening, and that’s when she noticed a distant figure flying in the air, heading straight in their direction.
She had long red hair and pearly red eyes.
Liana looked at her and frowned as she tried to remember some of Caliste’s memories, as the image of this very person had often appeared.
’Who is she again?’
And that’s when it hit her.
’That’s Ava. His mother in this life.’
Liana regained her composure since she knew that Caliste cared a lot about his mother and sister. She had no idea why she was here at this time, but she thought it was very good timing. Otherwise, she had no idea how she would bring Caliste back from this strange phase.
He continued to punch and attack everything he could.
Excalibur was able to resist the Death Mana, the blade not being corrupted because of how pure it was. However, the same couldn’t be said about Canna, who was being affected with every passing second.
"YOU TWO! STOP RIGHT AWAY!" Ava shouted instantly as she finally got into range to shout at the two of them.
She was frowning, clearly mad.
Caliste froze for a second as he heard a voice he recognized almost instantly.
The voice of his mother, Ava.
’What is she doing here?’ he thought with a frown as his gaze immediately went in her direction.
The same could be said about Canna, who snapped his head around and saw his mother approaching them at a very fast pace.
With a single shout, she had been able to calm both youths in record time. However, even then, the Death Mana surrounding Caliste wasn’t disappearing just yet. It was still going strong even now.
They had stopped fighting, but Caliste hadn’t forgotten his goal, which was to recuperate the sword in his hands.
"Are you two trying to kill each other or something?" Ava asked with a frown as she looked into the eyes of both of her sons, disappointed in each of them. "What were you thinking?!"
Ava locked eyes with Caliste as she had seen just how aggressive he had been. Even now, she could feel the hatred in his gaze as he looked in her direction. She had never seen her son act this way, which made her think that something had definitely happened between him and Canna.
’Just what could he have said to make him so angry?’ Ava thought. She had always seen Caliste as very calm and collected. The only time she had seen him angry was back at Ciel for his 18th birthday.
For the rest of the time, he was always happy and easygoing.
"I just want him to give me that sword," Caliste muttered with a frown.
Ava frowned as she glanced at the sword in Canna’s hands, her eyes widening almost instantly. "Who gave you that?"
"Father. He thought I deserved it."
Ava was even more surprised.
Caliste knew that she recognized this sword from the look on her face. Even Canna noticed the change in behavior coming from his mother. The gaze in her eyes was now one of pure confusion.
"What’s so special about this sword anyway? Why are the two of you so shocked that I have it?" Canna asked with a frown.
He had never asked his father about where this sword came from. The only thing he had been told when he received it was to take care of it and not to lose it.
He found it strange that the two of them had such strong reactions because of it.
"That sword is not a random sword, son."
Ava wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to talk about it with Canna. She knew how he was... telling him where this sword came from might make him even more boastful in general. Still, she thought that it would be a great opportunity to tell him.
"The sword that your father gave you is the sword of one of the heroes, Alek. It’s the most powerful sword in this entire world. It is said that it can even cut through mana as long as you are accepted by the sword."
’Cut through mana?’ Canna frowned as he hadn’t been able to cut through that Death Mana at all. It kept pushing him back more than anything.
"It can’t cut through mana. I’ve already tried plenty of times."
Caliste scoffed right in his face because of how stupid Canna was.
"What are you scoffing at?!" Canna asked his brother with a frown on his face.
"Your stupidity. The only reason why the sword can’t cut through mana is that it doesn’t recognize you as the owner. You are not meant for this sword; you never were."
Caliste was mad and very angry to see this sword in the hands of a demon. Nevertheless, he had also noticed that since earlier, the sword in Canna’s hands wasn’t listening to him. It was very small, but he could sometimes see Canna’s wrist slightly moving with the sword in his hands. It was as if the sword wanted to escape his grasp.
Ava was surprised to see Caliste knowing about Excalibur, but she also knew that it was not the time to ask such questions about why he knew such things. All she knew for sure was that Caliste was definitely right about all this.
"It doesn’t recognize me as the owner?!" Canna shook his head. "That’s fucking stupid. A sword is a tool that’s made to be used by someone else. I don’t need it to accept me. I just need it to listen to me, and I’ll force it if I have to."
Caliste shook his head. That might work with other swords, but Excalibur was different. Caliste had experienced it a very long time ago when he had first held it right after it was crafted by Thorin.
Canna was trying to argue until a voice echoed in his mind.
"Give the sword to Caliste."
Canna didn’t even have to ask who the owner of the voice was. There was only one person whose voice could enter his mind. It was the Demon King talking to him from far away, watching the situation unfold.
"But father, I’m the rightful owner of the sword. I can’t give it to him!" Canna said out loud, Caliste and Ava frowning as they saw him speak to himself.
’Is he insane? Why is he acting like he’s talking to the Demon King right now?’ Caliste thought with a frown.
"B-But—"
He clicked his tongue.
"Fine." He handed the sword to Caliste with a frown on his face. "Here you go... father wanted you to have it."
Caliste frowned at those words.
The Demon King wanted him to have the sword.
’Why would he want me to have the sword when he knows that I do not like him? He also knows that Liana was the one responsible for the tunnel filled with mana runes.’
’The Demon King must be doubtful of who I am. He must already be thinking that there is something strange about me.’
Caliste was trying to make sense of that choice. However, if Canna was giving this sword without anything in exchange, Caliste had no choice but to grab it and take it. Such an opportunity wouldn’t come back again.
Caliste grabbed it from his hands, and instantly... the golden glow of the sword exuded energy that Canna had never seen before. Ever since he had used the sword, he had never seen such a strong golden glow.
’I-Is that what it means to be accepted as the owner of the sword?’ Canna thought with a slight frown.
He could only watch as Caliste smirked, the Death Mana surrounding him slowly being dismissed as a result.
Instead of being Death Mana, a strong light began emitting from his body.
Life Mana.
His entire demeanor changed within seconds, and everyone nearby was shocked by this new sight as Caliste began to float in the air, holding onto the sword as if he were the chosen one.
