Chapter 35: Fire and Ice

"Hwan... give it to him..."

Cheon Areum pointed with his eyes in Kim Ryung’s direction.

"Ah... I did! I gave him all the temperature reducers... they’re not working anymore..."

A little frown formed between Cheon Areum’s eyebrows as he listened. He pushed himself up a bit from the ground with a groan and Yoon Seoyul’s help, but he didn’t let him walk and wordlessly picked him up as if he weighed nothing. Arms under his knees and back, he held him closely and securely.

"....?"

"Inho, we’re leaving. Ryung came to the location with Lee Haeun. Go to the third car and get him."

Yoon Seoyul spoke nonchalantly, but Cheon Areum could clearly sense it—he was angry but holding it back. He also refused to look at him or talk with him again. Cheon Areum tried to get down, but Yoon Seoyul’s hold was firm. Hwan and the others carried Kim Ryung as Inho ran out the gate at Yoon Seoyul’s order.

"Yoon Seoyul... I can walk now."

Cheon Areum whispered, just loud enough for him to hear as they walked out the gate, but as he expected, no response came. He quietly pressed his head against his chest. To be honest he still felt uneasy, as if he could pass out at any moment, but at least he could register his surroundings.

Also, why was Yoon Seoyul’s heart beating so fast? He’s not about to have a heart attack, is he?

Cheon Areum worriedly glanced up at him as the sky changed colors from night to day.

"Oh my! Are you okay, Yoon Seoyul? It was a difficult gate—I knew it! Jihyeon just had to be absent today..."

"Call the air ambulance. They’re both in critical condition. And get me an omega suppressor."

"Oh? Um, yeah..."

The woman adjusted her glasses before walking away. In the distance, Cheon Areum saw Inho talking with Haeun, who was sitting inside the car through the rolled-down window. After listening to him, Haeun hurriedly stepped out of the car and came their way, Inho following behind him.

It was Cheon Areum’s first time seeing such a soft yet frozen expression on someone’s face. He clenched the blood-soaked clothes as Haeun approached. Wrinkles appeared on Haeun’s forehead sniffing the omega pheromones in the air but his eyes never left Kim Ryung.

"Wait, Haeun, don’t directly touch him. His skin is too hot..."

Hwan warned as Haeun sat on the grass beside him. Carefully, Hwan held Kim Ryung’s upper body upright, making sure to only touch the outer layer of his clothes. Meanwhile, Haeun cupped Kim Ryung’s flushed face without hesitation and leaned in, pressing their foreheads together. A faint sizzling sounded from the connection—the result of clashing temperatures.

The sweat that soaked Kim Ryung’s skin began to crystallize, turning into fragile droplets of ice. The transformation wasn’t smooth—the moisture trembled, struggling to hold its form. But Haeun didn’t waver. He kept insistently using his abilities, persistently forcing the searing heat to cool, coaxing each drop into solid frost.

"Wouldn’t it be better to touch skin-to-skin, since Haeun can turn his body temperature freezingly low?..."

Inho suggested, standing behind Hwan.

"You think they can do that here?"

"Ack—shit! He’s crying again! What are you going to do now, Kim Ryung?"

Haeun’s eyes welled up with unshed tears as he stared warmly at Kim Ryung’s face.

"Open your eyes... Ryu..."

He closed his eyes, and the tears threatening to fall froze on his cheeks. Haeun was turning his body temperature as low as possible, but Kim Ryung still didn’t open his eyes nor speak. He was barely breathing.

"You! Are you seriously using your abilities right now? You’re not even a hunter..."

The woman urgently walked toward them.

"I haven’t deactivated my Blood Rage, either."

In a chilling tone, Yoon Seoyul spoke and blocked the woman from getting any closer. She flinched, startled, and backed away a few steps.

"The omega suppressor... I’ve called for the air ambulance. They’ll arrive in a few minutes."

The woman spoke in a low voice, handing the suppressor to him. Yoon Seoyul stared at the suppressor, unsure how to inject it himself. He couldn’t call Hwan to do it since he was the one holding Kim Ryung.

"Haa..."

Sighing feebly, Cheon Areum took the suppressor from him. He remembered reading somewhere on the internet that injecting suppressors in the neck was most effective for omegas, but he also stared at the injection in his right hand mindlessly. He couldn’t move his left arm or hand at all.

"...."

*

A boring white ceiling and a strong scent of disinfectant.

"Ugh..."

His whole body ached as he slowly pushed himself up from the hospital bed. The stiffness in his muscles and the dull throb in his head confirmed what he already suspected—he had blacked out again. A thick cast brace wrapped tightly around his left arm, held in place with straps and bandages. He flexed his fingers slightly, testing their mobility. At least they worked now.

Swinging his legs off the bed and wincing at the soreness that greeted him like an old enemy, he saw Inho standing against the wall with his arms crossed, looking at him silently.

"Go on. Where were you going?"

"What about Kim Ryung? How’s he doing now?"

"He’s staying in the next room, but... he’s in a coma right now."

Inho spoke hesitantly, in a pensive manner. Cheon Areum glanced down at the floor, making up his mind.

"Can I go and see him?"

"Haeun is with him in the room... are you sure?"

He nodded at Inho.

"Alright, sure, I guess... I just hope Master doesn’t rebuke me later."

"Thank you."

Inho uncrossed his arms and opened the door for him.

"Do you need help walking?"

"No, it’s okay. My body is just a bit numb."

Cheon Areum declined, shaking his head as he sluggishly stepped over to the door.

"That might be from the suppressor. You don’t have to worry about your pheromones for now—you also have a clear patch on your nape to stop any pheromones from leaking."

He checked his neck with his right hand. There was a thin, skin-like sticky patch covering the entirety of his nape. He should have searched more and bought this at least beforehand...

Cheon Areum stood before the door, his hand frozen mid-air. He inhaled deeply, calming the knot of unease in his chest, before knocking twice and turning the handle.

The room was dim and quiet, filled with the sterile scent of medicine and the gentle beep of machines. On the hospital bed lay Kim Ryung, eyes closed, but his complexion had returned to its usual tone. Beside him, Haeun sat hunched forward on a chair, both hands wrapped around Kim Ryung’s as if afraid to let go.

At the sound of the door, Haeun looked up, his expression faint but drained, eyes swollen and dull with exhaustion. Cheon Areum didn’t speak right away. He stepped inside silently and walked to the foot of the bed. Then, he knelt on the floor, head bowed, shoulders curved.

"This might be useless... but I want to apologize since it was entirely my fault. I’m truly sorry. I hadn’t intended for this to happen... but I sincerely apologize for my fault."

"I have been with Kim Ryung for a long time now. I can tell you how he will behave once he wakes up. He won’t hold you accountable for anything. He’ll laugh it off like it was nothing."

Lee Haeun spoke bleakly. He wasn’t just holding on to hope—he was certain Kim Ryung would wake up soon. Cheon Areum trusted him. If it was the person closest to Kim Ryung, he would believe it.

"But if he doesn’t wake up... I won’t forgive you. I won’t ever forgive you."

"I understand."

"If you’re done, leave. It would be best if I don’t see you until Ryu is awake."

Complying with his wishes, Cheon Areum left the room and returned to his own while taking his phone out of the inventory and calling Yoon Seoyul. He held the door open, about to enter, when the call was declined.

Is he still angry at me?

"Inho, can you tell Aera to drop off Rian back at my apartment? Also, I want to be discharged."

"Do you want me to be guildless? I can’t discharge you. You don’t even know anything..."

"What is it?"

Cheon Areum tilted his head and asked as he sat on the one-seater couch next to the door.

"It was terrifying—that’s what it was! Do you know how hard it is to separate an S-Class Alpha from someone? It was as if he became possessed! Yoon Seoyul wouldn’t let you go no matter what! We tried to forcibly take you away from him, but no one succeeded. I was positive that he would also go into a rut..."

"Why are you glaring at me like that?!"

"Why is he not picking up my call, then? Where even is he?... You’re not making this up, are you?"
