Chapter 34: How can I watch you die?
"No! Yoon Seoyul, you can’t fight that thing. It’s not possible! ...With that size..."
Cheon Areum glanced at the mangled mess, half-shocked by its size and half disgusted by its hideousness. Taking on a mountain with bare hands? Is that possible? Of course not!
"Stay down! Where do you think you’re going??"
"Enough. I’m not listening to you anymore. Go to the gate, or wait here if you can’t walk by yourself."
Shaking off the burning grip that had tried to stop him, Yoon Seoyul stood tall, his gaze locked onto the towering abomination. His fingers grazed the side of his neck where sharp nails and teeth had just nicked him—blood smeared across his fingertips. He glanced at it, confirming it was blood.
Without hesitation, he bolted forward—a flash of raw, berserker force. The air cracked with pressure as he charged, tearing apart the bodies that had stuck together to form the contorted figure. His fists and feet shredded flesh from bone, his movements like blades through rotting silk. Arms were flung aside, spines split apart, and tangled torsos unraveled as he carved a bloody path toward the core buried within.
He was trying to get to the core and stop the transformation of the boss at the same time. For monsters of this type of structure, they all had a core buried deep inside. One could only eliminate the boss by getting through its thick-bodied layers and destroying the core. Yoon Seoyul had done it before in the book, but he still felt uneasy. Seeing it happen in front of his eyes was completely different from reading. There was no way Yoon Seoyul could get through that thing and crush the core by himself.
Damn it. I didn’t bite you so you could go ahead and use Blood Rage against the boss monster! It was to help you get away from me as fast as possible!
Besides Unstoppable Charge, there were two other skills Yoon Seoyul had. One of them was Blood Rage, which he could only activate after bleeding. The more blood he shed, the fiercer he became during its activation. It was a ruthless and terrifying skill that could easily cost one their life if they kept going, ignoring the blood loss.
"Yoon Seoyul!"
The monster, despite being in its development period, recognized the danger to its life and was teething all around Yoon Seoyul’s frame. Cheon Areum promptly shouted again, but he didn’t turn, and the bodies one by one covered Yoon Seoyul with teeth and all, hiding or gobbling him whole.
"Yoon Seoyul?!"
"Yoon Seoyul!"
"Hey! Come back, Yoon Seoyul!"
Cheon Areum became anxious with each second of not being able to see Yoon Seoyul. Not even a speck of his being remained outside. What if it could digest him? What if it had already taken Yoon Seoyul and he had become a part of the monster?
The monster didn’t attack him nor did it come close to him, but the rotating skin of bodies on its surface bothered him. It was as if it was continuously crushing and rolling on Yoon Seoyul inside.
No... I have to get up...
Get up! Move your legs!
One last time, Cheon Areum. Please, just once more—get up!
Cheon Areum punched his legs, which refused to work, desperately. His body had completely given up. It wouldn’t stir no matter how many times he tried.
Please... just once...
Cheon Areum pleaded with himself, watching the monster with concern. That’s when he saw a dark red liquid seeping out from under the monstrous giant, dyeing the ground black.
"Yoon Seoyul! Yoon Seoyul..."
His faint breath hitched seeing the blood. He felt like he was losing his mind.
No... MOVE! MOVE! MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!
"Cheon Areum, fucking move already!!"
He yelled, an anguished cry ripped straight from his throat. Every fiber in his body trembled violently, nerves on fire, muscles twitching out of control. Yet, he moved. With sheer willpower alone, he punched his hands against the ground, lifting himself despite the unsteadiness. His legs jittered beneath him, barely holding up his weight with a slouched posture.
But his eyes—bloodshot and unwavering—were fixed ahead.
On the only thing that remained clear in his blurred world.
The boss monster, where Yoon Seoyul was.
He staggered forward, one shaky step at a time, dragging his body through the graveyard of blood and ashes. Reaching for the mound of flesh, he plunged his hands into the gooey, warm mass like a madman possessed. His fingernails tore against sinew, skin, and bone as he dug through the squirming pile, his breath ragged, his mind blank—no thoughts, only fear.
"Where... where is he—"
He muttered, but the words got lost in his throat. Somewhere in the depths of this foul amalgamation, Yoon Seoyul might still be alive.
Then, something shifted.
Through the tangle of limbs and viscera, he caught a glimpse—a narrow opening, just enough space for three people to crouch together. Inside, bathed in blood and encased in the quivering walls of the monster’s inner body, was Yoon Seoyul.
He was alive.
Soaked in red. His hand, drenched and fierce, was reaching upwards—towards the pulsating core embedded in the ceiling of the fleshy chamber.
"Yoon Seoyul!"
He shoved his way inside, ignoring the sickening squelch beneath his knees, and seized Yoon Seoyul by the back of his blood-soaked shirt. Yoon Seoyul thrashed, trying to resist, his hand still straining toward the core—but it was pointless.
A bloodied S-Class was no match for a distraught S+ Class.
Cheon Areum, furious and without a shred of mercy, yanked him back, muscles straining, and dragged him out of the hellish cavity. No amount of resistance mattered. The moment his grip tightened, it was over. With a snarl of effort, he flung him out—threw him like a ragdoll—away from the monster. Yoon Seoyul hit the grass outside the graveyard monster’s radius, tumbling hard before skidding to a halt.
"System... can I use Energy Explosive?"
Cheon Areum said in a weak voice, staggering as he got down from the boss monster. His limbs trembled, his breath uneven, but his eyes were still burning with focus. Behind him, the hole he had crawled into—the one he had pulled Yoon Seoyul from—began sealing itself rapidly. The monster’s bloated body pulsed like a living tumor, regenerating the damage with sickening ease. The moment it finished healing, it would retaliate.
He didn’t have time.
[The remaining energy is insufficient. It is dangerous to proceed with the skill Energy Explosive.]
"Is that the case for all the skills?"
[Yes.]
"Do it then. Energy Explosive."
[Warning! Using skills on such low level of energy can even result in death!]
[It is recommended to not use any skills currently.]
"System, Energy Explosive."
Cheon Areum placed his hand on the sturdy stature to steady himself as he spoke in a grim tone.
[Asking for confirmation. Should I proceed with the skill Energy Explosive?]
"Yes."
In just a few seconds, the monster had completed repairing itself. But Cheon Areum was faster. At the same moment its body knit itself back together, he pressed his palm into its surface and activated Energy Explosive. A black blast surged outward like a devouring tide, engulfing both the monster and Cheon Areum’s arm still ingrained in its flesh—blackening his vision and knocking him out.
*
"Hwan. Give me all the energy boosters you have right now!"
Panting and panicking, a voice traveled into his ears. A small slit of his eyes opened. His left arm was touched, making him shudder and crawl into the warmth of the person holding him.
"Master...."
"Give it to me. I’ll do it."
All he could hide was his right arm. The left arm still outside was grabbed again, making him wince faintly.
"Hurts..."
"Hurts? Cheon Areum, are you awake? Open your eyes and talk to me."
"Where does it hurt?"
"Does this arm hurt too?"
Cheon Areum couldn’t respond. He just listened. He couldn’t even see anything, so he just closed his eyes, unresponsive.
"He’s not saying anything now, Master... You can inject it in the ankle too. Let me do it."
"Hwan! When did Ryung pass out? He’s also not opening his eyes! He’s barely breathing for god’s sake!"
"Shouldn’t we exit the gate now? What are we waiting here for?"
"The pheromones are making me dizzy again..."
"Just wait until he gets an energy booster... it won’t take long."
Kim Ryung was unconscious? Who said that? Cheon Areum tried to make sense of the voices as a needle was injected into his ankle. He felt a fresh batch of energy surging from that direction into his veins. Only after that did he manage to see again.
Yoon Seoyul’s face came first into view. His face was on top of him, looking at his ankle as he nervously wiped the blood and sweat from his face. He was the one holding him tightly, sitting on the road. He turned his head. The gate was just within reach. Kim Ryung was also laid down on the road. He was really unconscious. Inho was hurriedly taking off his shoes and socks, trying to reduce his temperature.
