Chapter 94: Moonlight Festival (6)
Their drive didn’t take too long, and they arrived in the Capital Square, however, they had to walk to reach the center, where the stage was located, as cars couldn’t get in anymore because of the already crowded area.
With bodyguards escorting them, Arren and the Duke walked casually together. In the middle of it, Duke Evan walked in front while Arren maintained his pace as he swept his eyes around the surroundings.
The sun had only set, and it was still bright even without the lights that were decorating the whole Capital Square. Actually, it was his first time attending the opening of the Moonlight Festival in the Capital Square.
It was an important occasion, but the majority of the younger nobles weren’t required to attend, and only the old nobles did out of respect for the tradition and the Emperor. However, after the speech, some old nobles would also go home immediately and wouldn’t watch the performances afterward. The opening was broadcasted on television and online, so no one actually missed out.
There was a space delegated for the nobles at the foot of the stage with rows of chairs, and at a slight distance, there was a boundary where the normal citizens or tourists could stand to watch and listen to the speech of the Emperor and the performances that followed.
Arren’s gaze landed on the crowd, and he couldn’t help but inwardly gape at this sight. It was already lively, and he could barely tell the magnitude and how many people were there in the capital square at the moment from his position.
It was already this much after announcing the attendance area that could only be occupied, then if it was like any other year, how many people would attend? Suddenly, the pressure on him increased again.
He pursed his lips and took a deep breath before slightly shaking his head, Arren stop with his thoughts and pressuring himself. He already did what he had to do, he was only one person. That was right; he had to instill in himself right there and then that a person, no matter how many things he knew about the future, could never perfectly change the outcome of things as he was only a human in the end.
Changing his mindset, and as the words of his father rang in his ears, the burden on Arren’s shoulders had greatly lessened. Everything would happen, if it was fate.
Arren averted his gaze from the buzzing crowd and continued with his steps casually, even though the coldness and slight sweat on his palms were still there. His mood was better.
He silently followed his father and maintained being behind by a few steps. As they reached the center, there were some nobles present there. His father greeted Duke Ellis, as he was the only one qualified to be greeted by the Duke first.
As Duke Ellis’ gaze landed on Arren, he was slightly taken aback at first to see him and knowingly smile.
"The young Arren came with you?" He said to Duke Evan said before shifting his attention to Arren with a grin on his face, "It seems I can finally see you at more events in the future." Duke Ellis gave a light laugh and joked, making them laugh. He didn’t deliberately say it, but the indication was more or less understood by those in the know.
Arren only laughed and didn’t say anything. They didn’t go on with that topic after all; that was still secret information at present, and Duke Evan smoothly diverted their topic.
They sat in the chair prepared for them in the front while conversing with each other. This was a formal occasion, unlike the banquet, where Arren had to be with his father and greet the nobles to be introduced to him.
Arren sat at this seat by one of the royal guard’s guides; Levin had already parted from them earlier, although he knew that he was still in the area coordinating the guards around. The alpha was too conspicuous as the chief of the royal guards; if he was on Arren’s side, they almost paraded his relationship with Spade.
And the other was that there was pressure on Levin as well, since he had to maintain the security of Arren and also coordinate with the guards around the square.
One thing they could only do was keep the damage to a minimum while also chasing the suspicious people around when the chaos began. It was really hard for everyone involved in guarding the capital square.
It was a poison they chose, like choosing the lesser of two evils. They chose to sacrifice for now to pinpoint and capture some members. It was an inevitable path they had to take, and similar situations would definitely occur in the future in their fight with this organization.
Arren was still in the front row, a bit away from the Dukes, and in his vicinity were some of the younger nobles with whom he was unfamiliar. He was the odd one out.
Usually, he was one of those social butterflies but with the impending chaos that was about to happen, Arren didn’t have the mood to make friends or talk too much.
He silently sat in his seat while waiting for the event to start, it was already dark and the capital square was completely lit up with lights and lanterns; it was such a wonderful sight, and the crowd became more lively with each passing minute.
Duke Merphen and Duke Arkin also arrived, and the seats of the nobles were almost completely filled. As expected, not a lot of younger nobles participated, and it was even more so that there was a limit this time around.
After the clock hit almost seven, the royal family arrived. Spade and Mother Empress Liviera walked casually under the respectful and admiration gazes of everyone to the stage. There were seats there for them, and instantly everyone stood and saluted them.
Arren also smiled and stood, admiring Spade, and when his gaze happened to land to the side, his smile faded. In fact, it was even more instinctive than him naturally fading his smile; he seemed to even pale, and his knees trembled as if scared that he sat faster than the others because of his lost strength.
Fortunately, it was also almost when the others returned to their seats that no one noticed him. Arren couldn’t understand as he knit his brows and clasped his trembling hands together.
He pursed his lips and lowered his head, calming his emotions. It was slightly less than last time, and after taking a few deep breaths, he became normal again. Although a few drops of sweat formed on his forehead, his back was almost drenched with cold sweat.
Arren lifted his head and swallowed before slowly and still nervously shifting his gaze to the stage where the royal family stood, aside from the Emperor and Mother Empress. Some of the royal descendants were with them, and there, sitting beside Mother Empress Liviera, was... Princess Noreen.
The moment he looked at her, the trembling of his lips started as he bit them hard to prevent it from being noticed that the corner of his lips twitched in a painful manner.
Why... was he afraid of her?
