Chapter 93: Moonlight Festival (5)
Arren didn’t have any chance to further talk with Spade after their meeting, as he also understood the alpha had become even busier. Now that the pressure on the scheme of the organization had also added to the already busy schedule of Spade during the Moonlight Festival as the Emperor.
He also obediently went home and only communicated with Rave about the progress of their plan. Arren understood his own capabilities, and planning wasn’t one of his strengths. And he knew that if he wanted to involve himself too much, he might instead become a burden to Spade.
It was already enough that he divulged some details that he knew from the plot. However, as he claimed, it could only be treated as a reference at this point.
"Son, are you ready?" The Duke’s voice rang from outside of Arren’s room.
Arren took a deep breath and responded to his father, "Yes, Dad."
With one look at his reflection in the mirror, he turned and exited his room. Duke Evan was already there, waiting for him. Unlike his formal dark suit, his father wore a suit of a lighter color. Even Arren wore a white and blue suit that emphasized his delicate appearance.
It was already the opening of the Moonlight Festival, and it had become customary to wear white or lighter colors when attending the opening. White or even some lighter colors were a symbol of purity and prosperity and were said to most closely resemble the moonlight.
Wearing lighter colors or even carrying white lanterns may bring a pure and prosperous year. Although Arren didn’t actually believe in it, as he grew up in this world, he was more or less influenced by the customs.
"Dad, I’m ready," Arren repeated after he got closer to his father and smiled at him.
The Duke looked at him, he seemed to have something to say but, in the end, didn’t say it and returned a smile.
"My son is really grown up now," Duke Evan spoke with the same gentle voice he always used, looking at his son as though he were slightly caught up in his nostalgia.
Arren smiled and didn’t respond to his father with words, but he hugged the Duke for a second before pulling away and giggling like the spoiled child he always was.
He actually sensed the reservations that his father had, even though he didn’t say them; how could Arren not know? In fact, he was also quite anxious to see what would happen later at the Capital Square. One thing was for sure: a fight was inevitable.
However, he had to attend. Arren was never a coward, and he was even more against the vile organization.
It seemed that the light of conviction in his eyes was so strong that even the Duke, who had apprehensive thoughts about letting his son attend the opening, had to shut his mouth.
After having a tacit agreement with their eyes, the father and son climbed down the stairs together, their arms hooked around each other.
When they went out of their mansion, their bodyguards—royal guards—were already there waiting for them. Arren was also not surprised to see Levin standing in front of a car and waiting for their arrival.
As chief of the royal guards, it was common sense for him to be on the side of the emperor. However, as he was also one of the most trusted subordinates of Spade, he was entrusted to make sure of Arren’s safety.
They already talked about it, and Arren had long been briefed by Spade on the security arrangements for him.
"Your Grace, Young Master Arren," Levin greeted and saluted as soon as they approached the car. Arren and Levin might be familiar with each other, but they were still in a formal setting, and they needed to abide by the rules.
Arren only smiled at him and nodded, while his father, responded with some polite words to Levin. The alpha’s identity was in no way inferior to Duke Evan’s status. After all, he had royal blood in him.
After going through some formalities and pleasantries, Arren and Duke Evan get in the car, with Levin politely opening the door for them. Levin then got in the car and sat in the passenger seat before giving some instructions to everyone. Not long after, their envoy left the Katz Mansion.
It was silent inside the car, and the tension in the air lingered, making everyone unconsciously become quiet. Arren, who was usually talkative, maintained his silence and let the atmosphere envelop them. Since he didn’t want to deceive himself and think that everyone and everything was fine. He was carefree at times, but certainly not foolish.
He kept silent and busied himself by watching the streets outside of the car. In contrast to the mood of someone who knew of the impending battle that was about to happen, the streets still gave off the ambiance of festivity.
The white lanterns decorated most of the streets and the lively crowd that he saw as they passed by from the official road. The traffic had increased, and the road that was reserved for the royal family and dignitaries was used for the nobles.
Arren pursed his lips as he averted his gaze from the scenery outside. He clasped both of his hands, and he only discovered that his palm had become cold. He swallowed and leaned back in his seat; he wanted to calm down and not think of any negative thoughts.
He always believed himself to be a rather carefree and simple person, so this should still be something he could easily handle. But once he had already thought of the chaos that was about to happen and all the innocents that would be implicated by the scheme of these lunatics, Arren still found himself feeling cold all over.
The self-blame in his gut was barely contained and was being awakened by his negative thoughts.
Arren had just closed his eyes when someone held his hand, and this action made him open his eyes and instantly meet the gentle gaze of his father.
"Dad," he said in a whisper.
His father gently squeezed his hand and smiled at him. Arren suddenly couldn’t take his gaze away. Even without his father talking, he had already guessed his intention.
"Everything will happen if it is meant to happen. We all want to change some things, but sometimes it will not necessarily go our way. That’s just how things are, my son." The Duke’s hushed voice, which only Arren could clearly hear, reached his ears; it was soft and seemed to have an inexplicable calming effect on him.
Arren’s lips trembled slightly before he nodded, and the corner of his eyes easily heated up. The Duke patted his hand before pulling him closer and giving him a hug, then stroking his back as though calming his crying child.
What his father said resonated the most with him. Arren realized that he truly didn’t need to feel guilty too much. It was certainly possible that even if he managed to inform Spade earlier on, the earlier plan of the organization could be foiled. However, the chaos wouldn’t necessarily be stopped either.
He was still anxious and apprehensive about everyone that would be implicated, but he was beginning to stop his mind from feeling guilty and blaming himself. His father was right; the organization’s plan to introduce itself to the world at the Moonlight Festival wouldn’t change no matter what they did.
Everyone was a victim. This time, his emotions were amplified other than his anxiety, and that was anger.
