Chapter 95: Moonlight Festival (7)
Arren didn’t remember meeting her before. The only thing he knew about Princess Noreen was mostly superficial, and as far as he could remember, she didn’t have any involvement with the plot.
She was Levin’s mother and even Spade’s aunt. The relationship between her and Spade was good, even with Mother Empress Liviera. She was only told to be someone who was always there for Spade before, and like his omega father, Spade also thought highly of Princess Noreen and held her dear as almost his second mother.
With his trembling lips, Arren stared at the princess. He wanted to know if he could get any clues as to why he was scared of her—even some memories in the book regarding her. He ignored the fear that stemmed from his heart and used his strong will to bravely look at her face.
She didn’t resemble Levin at all; her appearance was delicate, and with the smile on her face, she was someone that could easily give off a kind of impression and an approachable vibe. However, instead of feeling closer to her, Arren’s instincts only told him to run away from her.
He clenched his jaw and leaned on his seat while clasping his hands tightly. Fortunately, it seemed that even with his fear, it wasn’t to the point that he would faint like what he experienced last time at the banquet. It was far weaker.
As he thought about that event, Arren also recalled that after his gaze landed on them, he fainted. Perhaps the stimulation at the time calmed down his emotions about seeing her again.
Was she really the trigger of his trauma? But what trauma? Arren couldn’t understand. It didn’t make sense. However, the fear that he was feeling was real.
Arren swallowed, and after a few minutes, his condition slightly improved, and he could breathe normally. He glanced at his side and heaved a sigh of relief as he made sure no one noticed his abnormality.
It was also the time for Spade to make his speech, and with his dazzling figure, everyone’s gazes were drawn to him. Arren temporarily shelved delving into the matter of his fear for Princess Noreen; otherwise, this would burden him later, and that was something he couldn’t afford to happen.
He focused on the event, and Spade easily distracted him. His alpha was too eye-catching and captured his entire attention every time. Arren’s mood improved, his pale complexion gradually turned normal, and the trembling of his lips receded.
Spade stood at the center, basking in admiration and cheers, and started his first speech of the year to the citizens of his empire. As the symbol and the respected Emperor, his status was extremely high, something that only one could look up to.
"The citizens of the Empire," he started; even with his speech, Spade was still reserved and yet far too intimidating. Instantly, it was almost on cue, and the noise considerably decreased because Spade was the only one speaking.
It gave an inexplicable awe from the bottom of everyone’s hearts. For everyone, he was Spade Remmington, the Emperor of the Present Empire. And for Arren, he was Spade, his alpha.
He easily calmed down and fixed his attention on the stage where Spade stood, and even with that, he didn’t forget that this speech would only be a short one. He knew that there was nothing particularly important about Spade’s speech this time as it was only something they had to do, unlike the previous years.
"Another year has passed once more, and I’m here to greet everyone a happy new year and celebrate the Moonlight Festival with all of you," he continued. It had a solemn tone with it that greatly encouraged everyone’s ears to listen wherever they were, and as he said that, some cheers also erupted from the crowd.
The monarchy and the Emperor’s position were highly respected and unmatched in the Empire and among its people. It was something that couldn’t be shaken, and while he knew that it was the case, Arren was somehow surprised to witness it before his eyes.
Knowing it and witnessing it was an entirely different matter, and the crowd erupted in cheers, with most of them shouting the line ’Long Live the Emperor’. Arren actually thought that this line was slightly cringy at first, but as he heard the crowd of thousands of people shouting it at the same time, he couldn’t help but get some goosebumps. This... influence made one greatly shocked and yet marvel at it at the same time.
At that time, Arren realized something. Why had the organization, even with its terrifying power behind the shadows, still been cautious in dealing with the Empire and didn’t rashly infiltrate it? Why they had to take it slowly and even take years to finally decide to show themselves? It was this kind of fervor that stopped them and its leader.
In the Empire... the Emperor was the dazzling sun, and if they didn’t want to be burned without them knowing, they had to tread carefully and hide in the shade of the night.
Spade’s speech went along, mostly recounting some of the important events of the last year. His speech was precise, and it never delved too much into one topic before going on another, as if he really only recounted every piece of an event.
He paused slightly and swept his gaze over the crowd. It was also seen on the huge screen at the side. Arren knew it had something to do with what was about to happen, but he didn’t know if the start of the chaos was still similar to that in the novel, and it was still in the middle of his speech.
However, from someone who was informed of what was about to happen, as Spade was already ending his short speech, there seemed to be some movement from their end because they were preparing.
Aside from uniformed guards, a lot of military personnel and members of black intel were mixed with the civilians, and all other perimeters were made sure to be part of the area to contain the chaos.
The tension rose, and Arren pursed his lips as anxiety welled up inside of him once more. The organization was waiting, and they were also waiting. In this chaos, it was unknown who was the real hunter and who was the real prey.
"With this year, may the empire be as prosperous as the previous year. And..." Spade didn’t pause by himself, and before he could finish with his words, confused gasps began from the crowd until they became horrified screams. Even the nobles in his row couldn’t help but turn to look at the commotion that dared to interrupt the Emperor in the middle of his speech.
Arren’s eyes darkened, and instead of panic, he found himself more focused and calm. Perhaps it also helped that he already anticipated it.
He also turned to look at his back and the commotion. And the moment he did, this happened to coincide with the moment when the guards hidden in the crowd showed themselves and began to control the situation.
Despite this, the surrounding crowd was frightened. He also noticed one that was already about to rampage, and both his face and eyes turned considerably crimson, and the alpha became restless. One omega in his vicinity also had signs of going into unexpected heat.
The alpha saw the omega, and before he got a hold of him, a man immediately twisted his arms to the back and pressed him to the side while someone escorted the omega in heat out of the crowd.
Arren stood in his place as if frozen as he watched similar situations that happened in the crowd. He fell into a daze for a moment; this was really the beginning of the war.
