Chapter 91: Moonlight Festival (3)
Arren approached his father to ask for permission to visit the palace. It would be much harder, but he was determined to let his father know that this matter was urgent.
"What’s the matter?" His father looked at him and asked, and the servant consciously left them to focus on what they were supposed to do.
He moved a little closer to his father and said, "Dad, I wanted to visit Spade in the palace."
Duke Evan raised his brow; he knew he was about to refuse, and Arren continued moving a little closer to his father to whisper something to him. He wanted to talk with Spade, and he was certain his father could understand why he wanted to see his alpha.
"Dad, it’s really urgent," he whispered, tone solemn, and whispered something else that was only audible to his father since even though the servants were someone they could trust, the matter was sensitive.
His father was taken aback and then widened his eyes slightly and stared at him with a questioning gaze. Arren could only nod his head with firm eyes.
After confirming it, although he didn’t quite believe it at first, the Duke trusted his son that he wouldn’t pull a prank on something like this. He sighed but didn’t say anything else before he permitted the Arren.
Arren also didn’t say anything else, and then, with another goodbye, he set off with the bodyguards to the palace. However, because of the upcoming Moonlight Festival, there was a lot of traffic, and Arren didn’t want to use the official road even if he wanted to arrive quickly in the palace, as obviously, he wasn’t part of a royal family even if he was the Emperor’s lover.
However, they soon arrived at the palace without any further delay than the traffic, and their car entered through the entrance he usually uses. Arren got out of the car with the escorts of his bodyguards; the entrance was still deserted, and he quietly made his way to the reception room that was always prepared for him.
Arren sat on the couch, and without hearing the greeting and pleasantries of the attendant that was there to serve him, he cut through the chase and immediately said his intention.
"Please inform His Majesty that I’m here to see him," he commanded with a rather stoic tone that he didn’t often use, in fact, he never used it at all.
The royal attendant appeared surprised before nodding, sensing the urgency of the situation, she excused herself to comply with his order. Arren glanced at her and nodded his head before pursing his lips.
He was aware that even without saying to Spade that he was here for a very important matter, he would immediately guess it, as Arren never sought him out first when he visited and only waited for Spade in the reception room to finish his affairs.
However, with only this minor difference, Spade, no matter how busy he was, Arren was confident that the alpha would attend to him first. While waiting for Spade to come, Arren forced himself to calm down and clasped both of his hands on his knees.
As expected, not long after, the alpha had already come. The door was opened hurriedly, and as Arren lifted his head, he noticed that Spade appeared relieved after seeing him. It seemed his unannounced visit had made the alpha worried.
Arren only realized how rash he was and could only smile at Spade to let him know he was fine.
"Spade," he called out, Arren had grown accustomed to calling the alpha like this when they met or in their calls.
Spade seemed to become fully relieved seeing him fine and approached him on the couch and softly spoke, "You’re here."
The alpha sat beside him and immediately wrapped his right arm around Arren, pressing their bodies closely. His amber eyes met Arren’s as Spade observed him before kneading his waist comfortingly.
"Is something the matter?" The alpha’s deep but affectionate voice brushed in his ears, easily dispelling some of Arren’s worries and calming him down. It was as if, now that he was already in Spade’s secure arms, everything would be resolved.
Arren also leaned his weight against the alpha’s body, letting the other’s warmth assure him and make him relax. Though he still had a sense of urgency, it somehow became controlled.
"It’s about the Moonlight Festival," Arren started, his eyes not leaving Spade’s face so he could notice every minute change in his expression.
Sure enough, he still wasn’t elaborating, and the alpha’s face became solemn as they stared at each other. Without letting Spade speak, Arren continued.
"The organization might be plotting something—no, they are plotting something. I’m sure of it," Arren held Spade’s hand tightly and firmly clasped it with his own. "Spade, this scheme is a disaster for the Empire, we have to stop it." He continued with his voice, firm and serious, totally different from the playful, sweet tone his voice usually carried.
Arren might have been always playful and someone who often went with the flow, but he was still ultimately someone with a conscience after all. Aside from the fact it was related to Spade and that organization, Arren was certain his conscience would haunt him if he didn’t do anything, even though he could do something, not to the extent of stopping or preventing it from happening but more of minimizing its effect on the whole.
He was aware that this man-made disaster would happen in the end, but at least they still had something to do with how big or small the damage could be. However, it was inevitable that a lot of people would still be affected.
Thinking about this, Arren couldn’t help but slightly blame himself, saying that if only he had informed Spade earlier he hadn’t have taken the situation lightly. Perhaps, they still had a chance to prevent the disaster from happening. However, it was already too late.
As his thoughts were being scattered and his mood was becoming tainted with depressive air, Spade lifted his chin slightly and made him look at the alpha in his eyes.
"Arren, you can continue. What should we do?" Spade spoke, and his words were gentler than the first few. He might not know what he was thinking, but the self-blame that was taking root inside of him meant that the alpha could sense his mood and emotions.
The moment Spade asked him about that, Arren already knew that the alpha wanted to divert his attention somewhere else and not to his current depressive thoughts.
He pursed his lips and swallowed, becoming grateful to the alpha once more.
"Spade, do you trust me?" Arren asked in a hushed and somewhat unconfident voice. Even his eyes darted around, afraid to see Spade’s expression.
He was always confident that even if Spade found him suspicious, he was aware that he wouldn’t deeply interrogate him. In the talks of trust, however, for some reason, he was afraid to know the alpha’s answer.
Arren was convinced Spade loved him so much, but he didn’t know if that was enough for the alpha to trust his words without asking any questions.
"Arren," Spade softly called his name as he touched his jaw, placing him so they could lock their gazes. "...my omega, please look at me," he then called him with his affectionate ensign.
Arren didn’t have any choice but to do so; the alpha’s gentle gaze lingered on him as their eyes met.
"I trust you, please always remember that."
