Chapter 186: Sick
Chapter 186: Sick
There was nothing wrong with their relationship. Arren had never been happier to be with Spade. The moment he accepted that things would not be the same as they used to be, he never regretted it.
However, no one had given him any clue that... The fault was him all along. All this time, was he harboring this inferiority disguised in his vocal confidence?
Ahh, Arren hates to admit it, but he had countless issues that he hoped Spade would never discover. And yet, here he was, revealing all of them. He was the worst.
Spade immediately shook his head, wrapping his trembling arms around Arren. "You’re not crazy. Don’t say that," he reprimanded, his words almost trembling as he uttered them. His heart pounded, becoming scared of Arren’s words and how he acted, ignoring the painful throb in his head.
Arren wanted to pull away from the embrace; his hand was pushing Spade away from him. "Don’t try to convince me!" he shouted, much louder this time. He was getting frustrated that his tears had already streamed down his cheeks. Spade panicked even more because of this and tried to wipe his tears, but Arren avoided his touch.
"We both know that I am! Something truly happened on that island, but I forgot about it, yet it started that night. You are so careful with me; do you think I can’t notice it?" he went on, his eyes filled with tears, staring straight at the alpha. "Yes, I’m used to acting oblivious, but that doesn’t mean I love it! How much I hate that I’m always so lost on what I should do in front of you... of everyone! Even I’m losing myself!" Arren didn’t hold back; tears soaked his cheek.
He was just too exhausted. It was suffocating to walk on a tightrope when he ignored the issues for whatever fucking reason there was a right time for it. Perhaps, there was! But when that time came, everything would already be in ruins, which he couldn’t afford.
In fact, rather than losing himself, he was more afraid to lose Spade. Because as long as he had Spade, he wouldn’t lose himself too much.
Pain flashed across Spade’s eyes; he didn’t let go of Arren, no matter how much he wanted to get away from him.
"I didn’t mean to make you feel that way." Taking a deep and difficult breath, Spade enveloped Arren with his arms. "I just... it’s hard for me too." He also couldn’t resist it; what happened in that time was still like a nightmare that continued to haunt his dreams. Spade didn’t want it to be triggered again, so he tried to be careful with his words, not knowing when it would be triggered again.
With a painful expression, he continued. Even with how much his head was throbbing, it couldn’t be compared to the pain of seeing his beloved like this. Seeing Arren’s tears was torture that constantly pierced his heart in unimaginable torment.
"If I can hide any sufferings so that you won’t be in pain, I would!" Spade’s lips twitched, and a defeated look surfaced in his eyes. "But I can’t. So as long as you didn’t acknowledge it, I won’t. I’ll protect you from all of it, Arren, that’s how much I love you. Please, don’t hate me for it."
Arren’s tears freely fell, as he was already sobbing. His heart was so much in pain, he couldn’t think rationally. Spade leaned his head against Arren’s shoulders, whispering his words.
It was he who opened this Pandora’s box, and now that it couldn’t be stopped, facing it was the best option. The biggest problem was, he didn’t know how to start.
His hunch told him he wasn’t ready to know what happened on that island, no matter how unreconciled he was. His emotions mostly calmed down after he let himself out and cried his heart out.
And yet, he was still feeling tired. He couldn’t find himself to be flirty and easygoing at this time.
"Why don’t you want me to listen earlier?" he muttered in a hoarse voice. His tears had stopped, but the corners of his eyes and cheeks were still damp.
Upon hearing him, Spade raised his head from Arren’s shoulders, his brows were knitted, and he looked pale. "I’m afraid," he answered in two words. That was the sincerest and most honest thing he could utter at this time.
What happened on that island had something to do with the leader, and Spade couldn’t afford to have something similar happen again to Arren.
Arren froze with his answer, but even more so with Spade’s pale face! Yes, he was angry and had a mess of emotions, but this was different. The alpha looked so pale, as though he were sick.
It was like cold water was poured on him, his heated emotions became cold in an instant. He could be as unreasonable as he could be, but in the face of the sick-looking Spade, all of this was thrown to the side. Worry filled his eyes as he touched Arren’s forehead; his eyes widened.
"Spade, you’re burning up!" he exclaimed with panic in his voice; his lips trembled after he thought that he was the worst. He fought with his lover, who was sick.
Before he continued with his self-guilt thoughts, a warm hand touched and caressed his cheeks. "Stop that, I know what you’re thinking. It’s not your fault."
"But..." Arren still wanted to argue.
"There are no buts. I also don’t even notice I have a fever," Spade casually stated. Even though he tried to be calm, his head was throbbing painfully as though it were being hammered. He was also getting dizzy, he experienced it a few times yesterday, but he ignored it.
Spade smiled, "I understand where you’re coming from. I’ll also try to not make you uncomfortable with my overprotectiveness."
Arren swallowed the words in his throat. His outburst earlier seemed out of the blue but was necessary. Now, he could breathe easily without the suffocation of always thinking of how he should act and hiding his thoughts.
Now, that his case is done... at least for now. He had to take care of his alpha next. As compensation, at least for lashing out and giving him an even more headache, even though it wasn’t entirely his fault.
"Lie down first," he ordered but in a soft tone. Arren’s emotions really came and went, but his outbursts were really something.
Spade didn’t try to fight it and laid down on Arren’s bed. The familiar pheromones that were already engraved on the mattress at this point invaded his nose, easily calming him.
It had been a long time since he became sick, but Spade thought... It wasn’t bad this time.
