Chapter 162: Key
Chapter 162: Key
As soon as he said this reason, Arren frowned as he furrowed his brows. He held the key? What key? He couldn’t understand, and he never remembered that he held a key for something.
Other than him, everyone more or less had a clue about it, even Spade, who wasn’t surprised by this answer and yet was still clueless about what it meant.
Arren lifted his gaze and met Spade’s eyes almost instantly as the alpha also looked at him. They both looked at each other, gripping the other’s hand, seemingly to assure each other.
They returned their attention to Curt; they didn’t need to say anything more as the alpha had already started to speak once more.
"When we failed on..." he paused before glancing at Arren for a split second before he continued, "... capturing the Young Master, I still didn’t see the big deal since we can have a chance again or abandon the idea. But... the team leader called me..." Curt swallowed, having difficulty putting his mind to words again.
"He was delirious!" he exclaimed, still frightened by the memory. "I’ve never encountered him like that; his voice wasn’t clear at first before he kept on whispering..." Curt paused again, lifted his gaze, and looked directly at Arren.
He seemed to become immersed in his memory and forget his surroundings or even the situation that he was in. "His Excellency wants him. We need to capture him or I’m dead—no, all of us. Then I ask, why? He said... His Excellency shouted, Arren held the key!" Curt even shouted the last words as though they really left a big impression on him.
"What is this key? For what purpose?" Arren couldn’t help but ask; all this tension began to build inside of him, as he even began to squeeze his hand hard and subconsciously.
Every word that he heard from the almost delusional Curt made his heart pound nervously, and he started to have goosebumps all over his body. He didn’t know what this key was, but it was probably too important for the leader to give it up.
Curt was still staring at Arren, and the moment he asked, the alpha’s focus was solely on him. He was still not waking up from this state. In fact, his expression was really creepy, as though he had been possessed by something.
"Arielle hands you the key. The key to the perfection of the drug. His Excellency is so sure that you have it." He responded, well, it was more like he was recounting the memories and what his team leader answered to him.
"Drug?" Arren inquired again; they needed to take advantage of the fact that Curt was in a trance state to gain a lot of unreserved information from him.
In fact, Arren knew why Curt was like this. It might not look like it, but he had been injected with truth serum by Levin earlier. It only took a long time to take effect on him, as even with higher doses, agents like him were possibly immune to truth serums, but this immunity wasn’t absolute. With enough pressure and acceptance to reveal his mind and even the trigger memory, it would still be effective.
As for who was Arielle, obviously, it was Arren’s belated mother.
Curt blinked, before he yelled maliciously, "It’s a drug to put the capital—no, the whole world—into a living hell! Every alpha will be berserk and only know how to mate; any omegas will fall into heat, and even betas will undergo changes. It’s a forbidden drug that brings chaos, but he called it... the evolution of a new world."
Arren’s mouth parted in shock. This... was lunacy! That leader was a lunatic! No, every one of them was. He couldn’t believe that his mother was involved and seemed to be part of the core research team for the invention of the drug. He thought of what happened in Capital Square... it seemed that was only one of the earlier versions and wasn’t perfected yet.
"W-What is the key that I had... I don’t know anything about that." Arren was already leaning on Spade by his side, he was beginning to be scared by all the information that he was hearing from Curt. However, he wanted to steel his heart and keep on listening; these were all the answers to all the questions that he had in his mind.
Spade was already frowning heavily, and he glanced at Arren. He felt urged to stop the omega from asking further questions; he had a bad feeling about this. However, he also didn’t want to forbid Arren from knowing the truth, as that was his right.
Not knowing what to do, Spade could only listen and let the conversation proceed; he would just stop it if something happened.
Curt seemed to pause, processing the answer to this question, his face almost twisted as though he was sobering up from the influence of the truth serum. This drug had considerable side effects on the brain, which normal people couldn’t really handle.
However, it was only for a moment, as this state persisted and his mind was still hollow. He finally answered Arren.
"The key... is you."
"What do you mean?" Arren was slowly and gradually getting creeped out by this, his instincts told him to stop listening and let Spade handle it, yet he wanted to be determined and know the truth.
"Arren is the key," he answered, but more like speaking to himself, his voice weak and low, the side effect of the serum was slowly surfacing. "His Excellency said... to perfect the drug... to open Arielle’s lock... marking you is inevitable."
The moment that the last words were uttered, a suffocating and dark pressure fell heavily on the room, and even Arren felt it. Curt couldn’t even maintain himself and almost fell to the ground, if only not for Levin and Ace, who held him, although they were also subjected to this pressure.
Arren couldn’t even calm himself, so how could he calm Spade? At this moment, his mind seemed to blank out; he was having difficulty processing this truth.
He wasn’t shaking as much as he thought, but it was even worse as he fell into some kind of darkness. His mind was pulled out by a tight embrace, and Spade’s soothing voice rang beside his ears, caressing the back of his hand as well as brushing his hair.
"It’s fine. You’re fine, I’m here. Breathe... Yes, like that, breathe." He instructed, and Arren did as he said.
So, at some point, he stopped breathing and was shocked. His face paled before he blinked and somehow recovered. Still, he began to tremble.
"S-Spade..." he called out; it was like the fear that he had for this organization surfaced. And to hear something like that, he was now horrified!
"No, he won’t succeed. I’ll protect you." Spade’s voice was still soothing, but it held a certain emotion he was barely suppressing.
Looking closely at Spade, which Arren couldn’t see, his eyes were exceptionally deep; the rage within couldn’t be hidden.
