Chapter 161: New Information (4)
Curt swallowed a few more saliva despite his parched throat.
"I’m sorry, Your Majesty." His voice almost cracked before he managed to stabilize his emotion and thought for the answer: "It’s hard to ask around about His Excellency, his whereabouts were always unknown, and he rarely showed up. Even with my team leader, he only saw him twice despite working for the organization for years."
No one interrupted him, so he could go on and express everything in his mind.
"I’m also someone who isn’t allowed to know the headquarters, much less be exposed to confidential matters." A rare, mocking smile appeared on his lips. "My ability is highly regarded as I’m assigned in the capital, but it also makes me a dangerous individual to the organization since there’s still a high chance of being discovered. Aside from missions that are related to the capital, I don’t know a lot."
It was vague and yet also clear; he didn’t know a lot, especially about the leader. However, his value was still high because, as a liaison in the capital, which was probably the most important place for their plans in the empire, he knew a lot about their plans.
Once more, Spade wasn’t surprised. However, he still stared at him to see if he was telling the truth. Actually, even if he knew something, he had a way to make him spit it out for a few days. In Curt’s intellect, he must have had a hunch about this, so there was no reason to make it harder for himself.
Spade nodded, deciding to stop the questions about the leader for now. If he could simply get information about the leader from a liaison, then he would be even more suspicious. They had not met yet, but he had already treated this leader as the most cunning he would encounter in his rule.
"One thing I want to know..." Spade’s eyes became sharp, and even the people inside, as well as Arren, who wasn’t affected by the pressurizing pheromones from Spade, could sense this change.
He furrowed his brows and looked at the alpha, wondering if he was about to ask, for him to react like this.
"Why was the organization targeting Arren?" Spade continued, the emotions in his words were hardly contained, and when it came to his omega, his self-control was always within the boundaries of what he could suppress.
Arren’s eyes widened slightly, and his heart couldn’t help but skip a beat as he realized why the alpha was acting like that earlier. So, it was a question about him.
He knew that at some point in this organization, Spade would ask for information about why he was being targeted, but he wasn’t expecting that it would be this early.
Arren seemed to still underestimate the weight of his existence to Spade; if he could, Spade had already asked it as his first question, which was his main priority. However, he still had to know if Curt knew about the leader, so he wouldn’t waste any time asking about it later on.
For him, knowing the identity of the leader was not even more important than knowing why the organization could do anything to capture him. Spade read something about a key, but for its significance, he didn’t have a clue.
Curt’s mouth parted, but he didn’t respond, or it was accurate to say that he had to think of the answer to this question in his mind. He then glanced at the blue-haired omega at the side of Spade in front of him.
He wasn’t unfamiliar with Arren; he could even recognize him from a whole crowd even if his hair weren’t blue. The omega suddenly became the focus of their plans last year.
It was so sudden that a lot of agents, even Curt, were surprised why His Excellency became interested in him. However, all they could do was comply with the orders without asking questions.
He frowned, and as Curt glanced at Spade, who was looking at him with much darker eyes and a furrowed brow, Curt only realized that he had already been looking at Arren for a few seconds, and the monarch obviously didn’t like it.
Curt abruptly averted his gaze and cleared his throat.
Arren leaned toward Spade, and although he wasn’t clinging to him too much because of where they were, it was at least a sign that he was there for Spade in the same way that he wanted support from the alpha.
He could sense that Spade’s mood became gloomy at once the moment he uttered his question, and Arren was only preparing that his mood and feelings could also be disturbed by things that he was about to find out, or his memories could be triggered as well.
Nonetheless, the moment that he scooted closer to Spade, the alpha cast him a glance. The crease in between his brows smoothed in an instant as Spade’s eyes became softer. He then held Arren’s hand, not minding the people that were there beside them.
Spade squeezed his hand. It was a clear message: he was there for Arren. That was enough for Arren to breathe a sigh of relief. The alpha then shifted and returned his gaze to Curt, who was now ready to answer, or at least he tried to be.
Arren also focused on the alpha; he was ready to know what it was that made him the primary target of this organization. He had a lot of guesses in his mind for possible reasons. He could be someone to be used to threaten his father, become their member, and betray the Empire, which he often read as a plot twist before.
But after finding out the real reason and identity of his mother, Arren had a vague guess that it had something to do with her and her time with the organization. However, that was not so stretched either. He hadn’t met his mother; he didn’t even remember her before the traumatic incident happened. What could be his connection to her other than his blood?
It was really confusing that Arren could only guess without knowing what was right. However, the man involved was already in front of them, so they could finally get some clues.
"The matter with Young Master Arren..." Curt started, and his voice seemed unconfident for some reason. "We were also notified about the mission sometime last year, and the team leader didn’t say anything else other than capturing him. I didn’t know any information at that time, and I could only guess. Perhaps it’s a way to get Duke Katz on our side."
His guess was the same as everyone else’s at the beginning.
"It’s possible. It’s not a secret how the Duke doted on Young Master Arren." Everyone seemed to agree, as he added, "But... after we failed," Curt paused and clasped his hand; his eyes seemed to become lost. "I only found the real reason... Young Master Arren held the key."
