Chapter 101: Another Attempt (3)
"Just cover your ears," his father whispered, even covering them for him with his hands. Unlike Arren’s already trembling hand, the Duke remained steady and composed. However, if one looked at his expression, he had also become much paler.
With this kind of dangerous situation, even those who have a lot of experience in the field would still undoubtedly feel some nervousness in their guts.
Arren nodded his head and put his hands in his ears; they were now on top of the Duke’s hand, which was still covering his ears.
"It’s okay, dad. I-I’m okay..." Even with his shaky voice, he didn’t forget to reassure his father, and yet he almost couldn’t finish it as he almost wanted to yell from fright.
Even with the covers in his ears, the battle outside could still clearly be seen. The piercing bullets that were hitting the cars and even some explosions that would happen from time to time—he even managed to see a car trampled upside down by the explosion.
He averted his gaze, and he didn’t peer outside to see what was happening anymore.
"What do you mean? Another batch? How can this be?" A furious shout of disbelief rang inside the car. Both he and Duke Evan lifted their heads and looked at the captain, who was clearly in a panicked state at this moment.
Arren’s heart pounded with anxiety; it seemed as time passed, their situation was turning for the worse. Based on the conversation, he could vaguely comprehend that there was a batch of enemies coming to reinforce their enemies.
What the fuck! This was not the time for jokes, but Arren almost laughed hopelessly at how insane the turning of events was. He never even imagined that something like this was going to happen today. He only thought of the event on the Capital Square. How come the situation has deviated to this point?
Even he was surprised by this plot twist. Damn, Arren was already crying mad inside, this was making him insane!
"At the back? What do you mean? They are already fighting there?" Every word he uttered had a kind of disbelief in it: "No, I’ll tell... I’ll tell His Majesty." He paused, and a helpless sighed that completely resonated with Arren followed. "We can barely hold on, another batch is coming in front."
Arren fell silent and could only pray for Spade to arrive faster. Their situation was truly in a hopeless state. It wasn’t to say the royal guards with him were incompetent; it was more like no one had anticipated the forces that the organization mobilized for Arren, which were truly astonishing. It made one think that the situation in the Capital Square was only a decoy to what they really were planning to do.
Wait... Arren’s eyes widened as it dawned on him. Was it really possible that this was the case? They made use of the preparation they had for what would happen in the Capital Square while also hiding the real motives and main forces they had behind them.
Fuck, this was so terrifying if that was really the case. It was because Arren himself didn’t anticipate this. He couldn’t help but sigh; the plot he knew had really become unreliable more and more.
What really had gone wrong...
His thoughts fell short as he almost yelled again before covering his mouth, then bowing again, shrinking himself in fear. The sound of the bullets was much nearer now in their car. That could only mean their defenses had become weaker.
No explosions resounded anymore since they didn’t know where Arren’s car was. Their enemies had become cautious about using explosives, fearing that they might bombard the car that he was in. He didn’t even know if he could call himself lucky or extremely unlucky for everyone to show importance to him.
"His Majesty... Yes." After saying that with a solemn tone and ending the short talk with Spade, he turned to look at them in the back seat.
"His Majesty and our reinforcements were blocked by the enemies while rushing here, but the situation has been stabilized on their end, and we can only wait." He said before nodding at them, "Your Grace, Young Master, please don’t leave the car." He gave instructions solemnly before he even got off the car and joined the group. Even the one in the driver’s seat had long fought outside.
Every manpower was needed, as they needed to hold on until the Emperor and his reinforcements arrived. It was only Arren and his father inside, still silent. He was already covering his mouth, and as time passed, his ears got used to the sound of gunfire.
Since their car was fairly soundproofed, it helped minimize the sounds from outside. Arren couldn’t calm down, and he was calling for Spade in his mind. While he knew the alpha must be doing his best to arrive in their position, Arren was beginning to lose hope.
The other side was clearly prepared, but the amount of force mobilized caught them off guard. And the fact that they had a few groups scattered to ensure that Arren was locked in one position made him terrified of the possibility of being kidnapped this time.
"Son... nothing’s going to happen. His Majesty... will arrive in time." His father’s almost hoarse voice sounded as he stroked his back.
Unbeknownst to Arren, he was already visibly shaken and trembling all over. His face had gone so pale that even Duke Evan couldn’t stand seeing him like this. The anger that he was feeling had increased but was immediately suppressed by the current condition of his son.
Arren was strong-willed, and few setbacks could make him entirely hopeless; however, this was a situation that even in his first life he had not experienced. The danger and even the thought of being abducted made Arren afraid for his future.
He stared at his father, took a deep breath to force himself to calm down, and then tried to smile, although the smile was a bit stiff.
"Yes, Spade will arrive on time. I trust him," he mumbled in response to his father.
He did trust Spade so much, and yet he also knew that the situation was not in their control. He would never blame Spade if he didn’t manage to arrive before their defenses completely crumbled and the organization’s plan succeeded.
Arren only hoped it was the same for Spade and wouldn’t blame himself if the worst really did happen.
With each passing second, he sensed that they were really in a hopeless situation. As their car was surrounded by guards outside, Arren could see that they were still protecting it with all their lives, and the organization had already pinpointed which car he was in.
He shut his eyes, it was unknown if he was praying for Spade’s arrival or despairing about what was about to happen. His father’s arms around his shoulders tightened considerably.
Was he really going to be captured?
This thought had just crossed his mind as he suddenly opened his eyes. Another round of intense gunfire resounded, but it wasn’t coming from them or aimed at them but from... a newcomer!
His heart pounded, and he couldn’t help but peer outside, amidst the men that were covering the car. He also noticed that their expressions had loosened and that they were getting ready for another round.
"Dad... Spade is here. He arrived!" He exclaimed too excited to even tone down his voice, and the hope in his eyes came back.
