Chapter 100: Another Attempt (2)

And as Arren was thinking about this, of course, his father had also pondered it. The Duke held Arren’s hand tightly; his brows had long since become furrowed, and he had a dark expression. Unlike Spade, who was still suppressing his emotions outside, the Duke never intended to hide his anger from the organization, and it was even more intense now that his son was being targeted again!

Arren woke up from his thoughts and felt the tight hold of his father in his hand. He turned to look at his father, and as their eyes met, Arren immediately noticed the furious expression on his dad’s face.

He was aware that not only he was worried for his safety, but that there were also other people who loved him. Arren grasped his father’s hand and nodded at him. He wanted to say something to reassure his father, however, that wouldn’t help the situation or the tense atmosphere.

Arren was also anxious like everyone else’s, as this was already the second time his safety was being threatened. While he did get the message from Ashton, no amount of preparation could possibly compare to what was already before him.

As their envoy smoothly arrived on the official road, Arren also sensed that the pressure in the air had increased. They couldn’t possibly use the normal road as the high traffic that came from the leaving cars from the Capital Square would prevent them from quickly leaving, even though it might be a good cover as if someone really was waiting to capture Arren, they would be at a disadvantage as well.

However, it was only temporary, and it might give their enemies another opportunity if they prolonged the situation. They had to take risks and actively respond to the plan of the enemy.

"Coordinate with us, we’re halfway to the intersection," the captain’s voice resounded in the car. Their car sped up, and as Arren looked outside, another car was already beside theirs.

He turned to look at the other side; sure enough, their car or even the envoy was surrounded side by side, as they probably occupied the whole highway by themselves.

Arren nodded at the tight security, although even with so many escorts, he still didn’t let himself be relaxed and relieved. However, he became more or less reassured that with so much security around them, the chances of the one targeting him succeeding in capturing him had significantly decreased to almost zero.

"Dad, nothing will happen," he faced his father and whispered. Since earlier, the expression of the Duke was so extremely tense that he was only fixing his attention outside and seemingly lost in thought while not letting go of Arren’s hand.

The Duke turned and shifted his gaze from outside to him, staring at him for a few seconds before sighing. Even though he didn’t look or feel relieved, at least the tension in his expression had loosened.

"I hope so, son... I also trust His Majesty," he mumbled in response. He didn’t say anything else after that and then fell silent once more.

No one had the mood to talk in this tense atmosphere; even Arren himself was so nervous. He could really only hope that nothing happened and that the number of escorts with them had scared them enough to give up their plans.

A few minutes later, as the surroundings darkened after they entered the underpass, As it was evening, it was even darker; only the lights installed at the side were barely illuminating the way.

With this environment, Arren pursed his lips as their car slowed down, he also noticed that the Captain and the driver had become alert. The captain prepared the rifle in his hand.

He tensed up; his heart was already beating loudly. The actions of the royal guards had also made him more nervous than before. Their cars drove through the dark underground way in silence. It wasn’t a long way, and with only a few minutes left, they were about to exit the road.

"Everyone be on alert, be careful of any ambushes." The captain said and ordered; however, not even a second had passed when a sudden explosion resounded.

Even though it was a little far from their car, the impact almost made the ground quake, and their car trembled with it. Arren shut his eyes and even bowed slightly with his hand, instantly covering his ears. If not, he had the impression that his eardrums would burst.

"Fuck! Cover! Protect His Grace and Young Master!" shouted the captain as the cars in front and to the side moved, speeding up slightly.

Arren opened his eyes, the corners of his eyes heating up with tears on them. This was his first time in this kind of situation! He had experienced the same thing in the club before, but it was not this intense.

"D-Dad," he called as his father’s arms wrapped around his shoulders as they bowed as though there was some gunfire in their vicinity.

"It’s going to be fine, it is." The Duke reassured both of them.

"Your Grace, Young Master, are you okay?" The captain turned and asked them; it was mostly to make sure about it, as they only felt the impact and the ones really affected by the explosion were those in front of them.

Thinking of this, Arren frowned; he was certain someone really died in that span of a few minutes. He only realized the danger that they were in after a hurtful slap of reality.

He remained silent; he couldn’t say anything at this point. He didn’t want to burden them, and even his anxiety was already creeping up his spine.

Even with the explosion in front, they still had to continue exiting the underpass, as it wasn’t beneficial to stay. The closed space would limit their every movement, and what if the lunatics exploded one of the cars inside? It was extremely dangerous.

Although the chances were slim as they seemed to want to capture Arren alive, no one wanted to take the risk and responsibility if something really grave happened.

"Your Grace, Young Master, please, under no circumstances are you to open the door and the window." The captain solemnly instructed them before the surroundings somehow brightened, although it was still dark.

Arren didn’t even have enough time to ponder or even peek outside as their car stopped and the sounds of gunfire reached his ears. It seemed these responses had been going on since the explosion earlier.

"Everyone hold on, His Majesty, and the reinforcements will come," the captain said.

Spade...

Arren’s gaze became clouded, as he really was hoping for Spade to come faster. In the situation, he vaguely understood that it seemed like the forces that the organization mobilized to capture him were far from what he expected.

From ambushing them with that explosion, Arren got the idea that his escorts, even with so many of them, were at a disadvantage! Arren couldn’t help but be shocked by it. How could that happen? How did a force large enough to contend with the royal guards and ambush them manage to enter the Empire?

With these apprehensive thoughts, Arren suddenly became fearful of the organization once again. What kind of importance did the leader have for him for them to come in full force in attempting to capture him?

This didn’t make sense.
