The Dragon Prince's Bride -
Chapter 97. Why Neriah?
Chapter 97: 97. Why Neriah?
At some point in his life, he had realized it... That she had feelings for him. Feelings that were more than friendship and it had hurt him for he knew he was hurting her because as much as he loved her—and by the gods he did love her dearly—he just could not love her in that light.
He also did not know why. He truly wished he could. In fact at some point he had tried to, but his heart just did not race that way. He did not find himself staring at her the way his father stared at his mother. There was something missing and he knew it.
A good friend would set her free from his side, but Barak could not bring himself to break away from his childhood friend. Even though he was hurting her by his side, he wanted to remain friends with her. For a very long time.
He was selfish, he knew but that was just how he was.
If there was ever a woman whom he could call his soulmate, then it was his dear Reg. She was everything a man could ask for. Everything... and he had always wanted to get married for love, but then he had also known that if he could not find that kind of love then he would gladly spend the rest of his life with the woman beside him.
Because she was his friend, his teacher, his sister, his soulmate...
But then that proposal had come, and he had thought to marry for the sake of his people.
That was before he saw the red-haired devil that night... for the first time. Her long red hair cascading down her shoulders like an endless red waterfall and the sight entranced him, her big green eyes were so mesmerizing that they pulled him in. Her voice was a symphony to his ears.
And for the first time, for the very first time in all his life, that tug at his chest, that rapid heartbeat, that loss of breath, that rush of blood... All the things he had wished he could feel toward Reg, he felt for that girl.
What was it about her that kept pulling and pulling him? As much as he hated her, something kept him glued to her. He could never resist the urge to touch her, to run his fingers into the lush of her hair.
What was it about her that kept him wanting more of her?
Was it her beauty? No that was not it, because Reg was also beautiful, that was an undeniable fact, although he never told her.
So was it her rough way of speaking? The way she sometimes cursed like a drunk pirate? No, if that was it then his heart should have been beating for Reg because she too was a cursing puppet. She cursed as much as she breathed when she wanted to.
So that was not it either...
Both women were similar in many ways, apart from Neriah’s tendency to tell very wicked lies, he felt they would be very good friends if they got to know each other better.
But if they were so similar, how come he never felt the kind of urges he felt whenever he was around Neriah, how come he never felt such urges toward Reg? The urge to touch, and kiss and caress...
What was it then? What about Neriah drove him to the point of mad desire?! She was a woman who’s lies never ended. So why would someone like that entrance him?
"Bar, you seem to have blanked out." She shook his arm, pulling him out of his thoughts.
"Reg," He suddenly called.
"Yes?"
"How does one please a wife that never wanted to be married and hates me for taking her away from her loved ones?" He shamelessly asked. He knew it was selfish to ask these sorts of things from her based on her feelings for him, but she was a woman too. So maybe she could point him in the right direction. And she was his only friend.
He didn’t want to talk to his father or mother about it... Rakima his sister babbled too much to confide in, and the only other person he could talk to was sailing the seas looking for only the gods know what!!
So he was left with her as his only option. "Tell me Reg, what do I have to do?"
...
After selling her lies to Aria and Riri, Neriah was exhausted, but she felt fulfilled. She felt as though she had won a sort of battle. But that aside, she still had to go see Lyle. Neriah was yet to mention it to Aria even though she had suggested that they escaped the place.
Her plan was to meet with Lyle first and then she would know what to do next.
So as to not seem suspicious, she went about her daily routine naturally. She took her bath with the help of no one else but Aria, then she helped her dress too. Again, it was one of her Avelian gowns. She still refused to wear a Tragonian dress and Aria was in no mood to even touch it, more or less give it to her mistress to wear.
She had breakfast alone, for her husband was nowhere to be found... Thank the goddess for that bit.
Now all that was left was for her to find her dear husband and ask him for permission to go out. Not that she really wanted to ask, nor did she believe she needed to but for all to seem normal and less suspicious, she was going to ask.
If he found out she had gone out without his knowledge, he might get suspicious and that would not be nice at all.
"So... where are you, my dear husband?" she muttered and smirked.
