The Dragon Prince's Bride
Chapter 74. Another letter.

Chapter 74: 74. Another letter.

Slowly, the days crawled by and Neriah was plagued with boredom. Of course not because there were no things to entertain her, no... In fact, the people on the boat, maids and crewmen alike, often had games upon the ship. The king allowed it. As long as the sea was calm and their sail smooth, then they were allowed to partake in various games.

But Neriah would never join them. Even when Aria had tried to encourage her by telling her it would help her familiarize herself with the people, and that even Barak partook in the games, she had refused to join. Not because the games they engaged in were not to her liking, but mainly because of the people who played the games.

She could not imagine herself stooping so low as to play foolish games with the lowest of the barbarians! With maids and smelly and sweaty crewmen who had been under the sun for only the goddess knew how long. She even wondered if they ever washed themselves.

She was never going to be pushed so low. Being married to a barbarian was already a low point. Now she was supposed to interact with lowlife barbarians! Never!

So even when the chants and roars from the excitement of the games they played echoed throughout the ship and caused a tiny part of her to want to be curious, she would deny it and remain inside the room.

As the universe would have it, there were some books inside the cabin and although most of them were written in Tragish which was the Tragonian language, she managed to find some that were written in languages she could understand. And so she spent her time in her room, reading.

That was until one day she decided to go out and get some fresh air and all of a sudden everyone except Aria was speaking Tragish! It was like someone had switched their tongues. For the first time in her married life, she sought Barak and even he spoke Tragish to her. She could not understand a word!

Frustrated and annoyed at the sudden change of language, also wondering if everyone on the ship had been out under a certain spell, Neriah had decided to retreat back into her room, but the Barak had spoken in the language she understood and told her that he had given orders to Tragonian on the ship to speak nothing but Tragish, much to her annoyance.

When she asked why, he had told her, "I told you I would aid your hate for me. This is me aiding you. Keep hating me Neriah, hate me more." Were the words he told her.

He was petty!!! The most petty man she had ever met in her life! She could not believe he’d do something like that! How could he order everyone to speak Tragish! Not like she was interacting with them anyways, but still, how was he so wicked! It irked her that he would be so petty!

But that was only the beginning of his pettiness, Neriah soon realized. As the days prolonged, he showed more and more low he could go to, "aid her hate".

From causing strange noises on deck at night to disrupt her sleep, to actually faking a snore, all for the same purpose! What kind of normal person faked snoring!

If he at least let her sleep in the morning, she would have been grateful but for some reason, he was always in the cabin, fixing things that were not broken inside it! He’d been fixing thru very perfect door for three days straight. So she could not catch any sleep in the night nor could she sleep in the morning either!

It was like he was out to make her days and nights miserable.

He said he would aid her hate for him and, by the goddess, if there was a measuring cup for her irritation and annoyance then it had overflowed.

Just like that, it had been almost two weeks since they embarked on their very long journey. And for the first time in a long time, she was alone, sipping warm tea, listening to nothing but the waves going back and forth. No annoying sound was being produced by an equally annoying husband. She was all alone by the window side, with a book in her hand and dear goddess, did she love the peace.

She just turned another page when a certain bright light reflected on her face, causing her to turn her head and she saw a lovely white dove on the window. And she recognized it. Instantly her heart leapt with joy as she saw a little note attached to its leg.

She stared at the door, quickly rose to her feet, bolting it before returning to the window side. Gently she loosened the note from the birds leg and she prayed that it was what she was expecting.

"My dear beloved," She read and her heart wept for joy. She stared at the bed and she wished to kiss it.

"Oh you beautiful creature. You beautiful, beautiful creature." She stroked the bed gently with tears in her eyes, "you bearer of good news. What shall I bestow upon you as a show of my appreciation for being a link between me and my beloved?" She whispered to the bed. And as if to reply to her question, it cooed and turned it’s head toward the hardtacks that were in a plate next to her cup of tea.

"Oh you want that. I shall give it to you. It is nothing for a soul so lovely like you." She quickly carried the hardtacks, crushed some and placed them on the window for the bird and it instantly began to devour.

"Eat, eat to your heart’s content." She said and even set her cup of tea next to it so it could drink.

After taking care of the birds needs, she turned her attention back to her letter.

"How have you been? I have seen you, and I can tell you have been suffering. But hold on my love. Just a little longer, we shall be to gather soon. I will have you know that I write this letter from a very difficult place. As I write this letter, I am aboard one of the escorts ships that has been sent by your father the king," Neriah gasped in shock.

She could not believe it. She knew her father had sent escorts ships to carry the gifts he had presented to the barbarians. She had even seen them when she went out. There were two of them. And to think that Lyle was so close to her all this while and she did not know it. To think he had been in one of the all this while, it made her heart flutter with happiness.

When he said he was with her in his last letter, she had not thought that he meant it literally. But he was really with her. She loved him so much.

"Oh, Lyle."

"I have not been able to contact you since due to the tight security. I will have you know that I have made plans. We can only escape once we get to Trago. By that time their guards would have been lossened around you. By then they would believe you no longer have a means of escape so they would no longer be wary of you. That is when we shall make our escape. So just hold on a little longer my love. I know how hard it is to dwell in a place that you know no one, but wee will be together soon. I promise you this my love, we will be together soon. I love you now and forever. From the one who is eternally thinking of you, Lyle."

He was planning to rescue her! Lyle was planning to rescue her. She was so happy. Her hellish life would soon be over! She could not contain her joy. She kissed the letter over and over again.

"Oh dear bird, would you help me deliver a letter to my love?" She asked the bird that was eating to its fill and the creature seemed to understand her words as it nodded its head.

"Oh thank you! Thank you so much. May the goddess forever bless you." She prayed.

Quickly, she picked a piece of paper and took the quill pen and she wrote,

"My dear Lyle, I hope this letter gets to you in good health. I miss you beyond words. I cannot say how much I have suffered in this hellish place. Only the thought of you has kept me from doing anything dreadful to myself. But I wish to see you again and be held in your arms, so I shall remain strong and wait for you. I want to let you know that I love you and no one else. My love for you shall never wither away. It waxes stronger the more I am tormented here. I live to see you again so until then, remain healthy for me and come rescue me, my dear knight in shining armor. From your faithful love, NC."
