The Dragon Prince's Bride -
Chapter 194. His fall.
Chapter 194: 194. His fall.
Neriah heard the scream that echoed throughout the place and she knew, "Barak." She muttered his name as she paused and listened, he was in pain. She could feel it from the sound of his voice.
She had prayed he would not show, but then again she knew he would and he did, and had fallen for their tricks.
Again, she moved her feet and continued running toward where they were gathered. The faster she ran the further the place seemed.
The words ’if only’ kept ringing in her head. She had so many, many things she was sorry for. So many things she wished she had and had not done, but this was no time to feel bad about anything. What was done was done, now she needed to find him.
Faster, she moved her feet, tearing through the trees, barely catching her breath as she ran.
"You shall not escape me!!" She heard a voice scream with anger. It was Lyle. She was close.
"After him! Do not let him get away!!! He is heading for the walls!!" Lyle yelled orders and Neriah, who had gotten to the garden of dahlia which was not a garden of bodies, stared at the man with horror in her eyes.
She looked to the direction he was pointing and heading towards, and in the distance, she could see the faint silhouette of what seemed to be a giant bird with white wings. The bird was not flying in a straight pattern. It seemed wounded as it was flying away in a spiral manner. It almost seemed as though its wings were too heavy for it to flap but it was doing so anyway. In fact it almost seemed as though it was the wind actually moving the giant bird and not the birds wings.
It took her some seconds to realize that it the giant ird was actually Barak and he was trying to escape. Her heart ached as she watched him fly, she needed no shaman to predict that he was wounded... Badly.
And Lyle was still going after him.
"LY—!!" She wanted to scream but she choked on her breath, "Lyle stop!" She managed to let out the scream this time around and the man turned around and stared at her. He looked angry, but his anger could not match hers at the moment.
"How did you get out?!" Lyle hissed, briskly making his way to her "Well you are too late to save your prince, but you came just in time to watch his final moment. You will—" his words were cut. He had not expected it, he could not believe it, but the reechoing sound was enough to tell him that indeed, she had slapped him.
"Y_You are wicked!" Neriah said with her blood red eyes on him. At the same time, she shifted her gaze to see how far that giant bird had flown. Please make it, you can make it. I beg you, you must survive. She prayed in her head.
Lyle’s sudden laughter resounded in the forest, forcing her attention to be upon him. Harshly, his hand grabbed hers and he pulled her closer to himself. "Indeed you have lost your mind." He said, and Neriah could never have believed that he could have such a look in his eyes. He was a totally different man. He was not the man she had wanted to spend her life with. This person before her was a monster. One she had brought to destroy her husband, and only now was she seeing this.
"Shoot him down!!" He yelled out the order while staring into her eyes, and it was then Neriah noticed the men with bows and arrows at the top of the tall trees and their aim was, Barak.
"No!" She screamed and yanked her hand out of Lyle’s hold. "Barak! Barak!!" She screamed as she ran past Lyle, running toward the direction her husband had headed.
"No, you go nowhere!" He pulled her by her hair and dragged her back to his side. "Scream as much as you want, from this distance he won’t hear you, you fool!" He whispered into her ear and it vexed her greatly. With all her might, she sent her elbow into his side, causing him to release her as he cried out in pain.
With no time to waste, Neriah ran from the madman behind her and trying to keep her focus, she channeled her energy to everything around her, trying to be one with the plants all around her.
Her eyes closed and she spread her hands wide. She had never done this before. She had never tried to connect with plants on such a large scale, but she had to try. It was the only way she could fish out all the men aiming for her husband.
Every root, every tree, every vine and every single leaf she connected to and when she could feel every single thing and when her eyes opened again, the green in them sparkled like green fire, and her fingertips glowed a brilliant green.
Her first mission was to get rid of the men on the trees and with a single flick of her wrist, every tree that had a person on it coughed up the person, sending them crashing into the ground... It was instant death for them.
"Neriah!" Lyle roared angrily but she was not stopping.
The men on their feet running after Barak, she caused roots and vines from every angle to drag them back. With an angry heart that only thought of helping her wounded husband escape, she made the roots drag the men into the earth, burying them alive in the sand.
"Neriah!!" He moved close to her to stop her from destroying the ng any more of his men but she sent her vines toward him. He was quick enough to fend them off with his sword. He tried to touch her yet again and vines held him back.
He battled with the vines, while Neriah, being one with the forest Searched for the men wherever they were hiding, destroying every single one of them until her body could no longer take the amount of energy she was letting out. A sharp ache in her heart forced her to the ground. Her fingers stopped glowing and her eyes returned to their normal calmness.
"You are foolish." Lyle said as the vines that had been fighting him fell to the ground and he made his way to her side. "Now you will watch and see him die." He said.
And as he placed his hand upon her shoulder, Neriah’s pupils darkened and it seemed as though she was forcefully being pulled into some kind of trance. "Now watch..."
His voice sounded as though he was inside her head and as he said those words, and then she could suddenly see him... "Barak—" She whispered his name. She felt so close to him and yet so faraway. She could only see him she could not touch him.
He was wounded. He was badly wounded...
"Can you see him? Your dear husband... He is fighting so hard but he is bound to die." Again, Kyle’s voice sounded inside her head. Tears stung her eyes as she watched him struggle to make it to the top of the walls. He was almost there.
Just a bit more, Barak... Just a little bit more. You can make it. You have to make it for the sake of our child, you have to make it.
She prayed to the goddess in her heart, and as she watched him fly higher and higher, she thanked the goddess for answering her prayers. "You cannot touch him now. He is far beyond your reach now. No arrow can reach that height." She said.
"Oh you should not be that happy yet." She heard Lyle’s voice yet again in her head and fear gripped every part of her body at his words. There was nothing he could do anymore. The height which Barak had reached, no arrow could reach him now, so there was nothing to fear. He was only bluffing.
So she wanted to believe, but then she saw arrows clouded in dark shadows. They looked familiar... And it only took her a second to realize why.
She was reminded of the shadow creature that had almost taken her life in the dungeon... And she panicked.
"No! Barak! Barak watch out! Barak!!!" She screamed and screamed and screamed, but she could not hear her voice. All she could do was watch the arrows riding on shadows, heading directly to him.
Dear goddess please, I beg you this once, hear my cry, save him! Please you cannot take him from me. Please!! He does not deserve this!! Please let him make it!
Almost there, he was almost over the wall.
Just one more flap.
She watched for it was all she could do and when he reached the top of the walls, she smiled. However her smile quickly twisted as the arrows reached him and she opened her mouth to scream and stop them if she could.
She could do neither.
She could not scream and she could not stop them... She could only watch as the arrows hit his back and her mouth opened to scream yet again but the sounds did not come out.
She wanted to stop him from falling, but all she could do was watch him fall.
And the moment she was pulled out of the trance, the world spun around her, her head ached and her heart felt like it had been punctured. She could not take it...
So she gave in... To the cold dark arms of darkness. Peaceful blackout
