The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride -
Chapter 26: An idea
Chapter 26: An idea
During dinner, Ren kept her attention on Kai. He was stern and deep in thought while his pack members debated about the vampire king. Neither of them could eat well, and she completely forgot her concerns.
"Who is Luther?" she asked, and the uproar ceased. A deafening silence swept through the air.
Eyes turned to the Alpha King, who seemed furious and out of this world, but to her surprise, he answered her question.
"He is one of my brothers! Your uncle and I made sure to send him back to hell many years ago, doe-eye, but somehow he sneaked out."
Ren strengthened her shoulders and blinked in puzzlement. He had fought alongside her uncle?
"Or someone released him," Beta Coran summed up.
Kai nodded, unable to disagree. Ren felt bad that she couldn’t help him or offer emotional support as he had been doing for her since she first saw him, even though he didn’t know what he was even doing.
Many questions pierced through her mind, but she dared not ask them now. Instead, she searched her memories for one of her studies in the last couple of months. "Sunlight can kill vampires, right?"
"Yes. Do you have something in mind that can help us?" Rail asked excitedly.
Ren hesitated, not fully trusting everyone here. ’We must talk alone! I’m going to the library. Are you coming with me?’
She hoped he heard her, and his smile made her breathe easily.
"No, Gamma Rail! I’m just worried that there is no sun in Iceland’s realms."
What she mentioned soured more expressions. But they had no clue that Reneira was going to find a better solution for this, a suitable replacement to keep her husband safe from turning into a vampire. However, she was also going to bombard him with tons of questions about how his brother had become a vampire, but later.
Leaving the table first, she asked Gloria to take her to the library, and the girl was eager to spend time with her lady.
"Gloria, can you read?" She asked as they walked through the hall to enter the corridor.
The blush on Gloria’s cheeks faded, and sadness took its place.
"No, my lady. Lady Elaika didn’t allow me to learn."
Ren halted, and the silence of the corridor stretched as she frowned. Her right to learn had been taken away? This girl had dreams too! A pain mixed with resentment swelled in her heart. Elaika had been in charge here, and instead of making the place thrive, she had focused on unleashing her anger on this poor girl or others.
"I’ll teach you. From now on, you’ll be my hand, Gloria. Whatever I tell you or teach you is between us, okay?"
Gloria gestured as though zipping her lips, excitement making her let out a silent scream.
"You are the best, Luna Reneira."
Ren gave her a gentle smile. She didn’t care how strong her magic was, but she cared about the strength of knowledge in the court she lived in. Information was the greatest weapon in all the worlds that existed.
However, she couldn’t deny that a strong physique could help a good brain, which she didn’t have.
’I should exercise and stop being a vulnerable piece of shit!’
Realizing she had just scolded herself loudly in her thoughts, she flushed. Her husband had certainly heard her cussing.
At the end of the first-floor corridor leading to the eastern wing of the castle, they stopped in front of a small door.
"Healer Rigo and his apprentices are the only ones interested in this place. Humans are not allowed."
Ren folded her arms across her chest, arching a brow. "I’m human, and we are both going inside!"
With that, she opened the door and grabbed Gloria’s hand, pulling her inside.
Rigo raised a brow at seeing a servant in the library, but Ren was already frowning.
"So many books in wretched condition!" she uttered, though she was not happy that all these precious books were scattered around. The shelves were filled, and where there was no space, they were stuffed into corners. Her heart ached at the sight before her.
"Sorry, we didn’t know you were coming," Rigo said, his voice trembling.
"Yeah, I see! Starting tomorrow, call your apprentices. We have to clean this place."
Ren was disappointed, and her face hardened.
"Wife, you are bookish!"
Kai was leaning against the wall, in the shadow of a bookshelf, holding a thick book in his hand. He closed it and dropped it into Rigo’s arms. "Take it back to its place."
Rigo nodded and left them alone.
"I thought we were going to talk alone." Kai didn’t even look at Gloria, but Ren could feel she was frightened.
"I’m so sorry, Your Highness. I’ll leave."
Ren looked at her. "Did I say you could leave?"
Gloria froze, her shoulders tensed. "No!"
"You stay. I need your help here." Her voice was calm and sweet as she smiled at her.
Gloria wasn’t sure how she could help, given that she couldn’t read.
"Alright, she’ll stay!" Kai drawled, liking how commanding his wife was. He had never seen a female pay attention to such a place. They preferred the fighting arena rather than the library. A sideways grin stretched across his lips.
"You asked me here. I guess you have an idea about how we can make vampires weak."
Ren nodded as she started walking among the shelves, reading the topics on each one.
"Are you looking for a certain book, Wife?"
Kai bent toward her from behind, and when she turned to look at him, their lips almost collided. His eyes fell on her lips.
Ren blushed and looked away immediately. "Ah... Ye-yes," she stammered.
"Before going to Jaigara, I was in the alchemy lab with my master, who was studying vampire blood to find a strong substance that could kill vampires."
Kai tilted his head, intrigued by this revelation.
"Did he find anything?"
"Not him! Before I could tell him what I found, my father came over and said that we should leave. And after that, I was condemned to..." She swallowed the rest, peeking at Kai, who was waiting to hear more.
"And you kept it with you!"
"I completely forgot about it. I thought they were going to burn me."
That thought was repulsive to her and left a deep wound in her being. Remembering Araben and her stepmother’s cruel smirk, she knew they had wanted her dead and had likely bet on watching it happen. The only one she missed was Aunt Eve. She must be so worried by now. Ren would send her a bird as soon as she got the chance.
"Do you have a book that explains the nature of metals?"
Kai mused and nodded. "You’re searching in the wrong place. Follow me."
