The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride -
Chapter 27: Looting her privacy
Chapter 27: Looting her privacy
Kai brought a big book out of a chest and placed it on the table. The thickness and weathered leather showcased how old it was, but thankfully, it wasn’t dusty like the rest of the books.
"Here is what you are looking for."
"That’s good!" Ren stood next to him, opened the book, and searched through the contents page. Her eyes tracked every word carefully before stopping at the word Silver.
She grinned with satisfaction, bringing the page up to him. "This can help us when the sun is sealed up behind the clouds."
Kai tilted his head and looked at the topic. "Study of Silver!" He read it out loud.
She nodded and continued while her eyes carefully observed the words. "That day in the lab, we received vampire blood vials from the front line to inspect. My master tried everything you can imagine, but all the results went awry. We thought we had failed. He went out for a while, and I couldn’t accept that the six-month attempt to collect strong elements to defeat the vampire had been futile." She paused as her fingers stopped on one line.
"Their blood is filthy, and silver is sacred."
"How did you find out?"
Ren took out her necklace—a ruby gem between two silver wings. It was small, but big enough for Kai to read the rune on each wing. He narrowed his eyes. "Where did you get this?" He extended his hand and caressed the surface. The lines on his forehead deepened.
"My uncle gave it to me when I was seven. Anyway, as a habit, I used to play with it to calm my nerves and focus. When the chain broke, and as clumsy as I am, the vial slipped from my hand and broke. My necklace fell into that bloody mess, and boom, the blood burned and turned to ash. Can you believe that?"
Kai’s eyes widened. This necklace was made of Fae’s pure silver, and to kill vampires, they didn’t have this much silver. And holy hell, that was expensive and rare!
"How much silver do humans have? Does their silver work?" Kai asked.
"About ten mines in different realms under my uncle’s rule. But what do you mean by ’human silver’?"
Kai ran a hand through his hair. "You don’t know?"
"What?"
Gloria pursed her lips. Even though she knew that necklace didn’t belong to their realms, how could her lady not know? It was common knowledge.
"My lady, only the Fae jewels have runes on them."
Ren tilted her head, trying to understand what she had just said.
"Runes?"
She brought the necklace up and looked at it. It was just carvings.
"These are runes—the Fae’s old language," Kai told her.
Ren’s eyes widened in shock. "So the purity of the silver was another aspect I didn’t see."
"Hmm, but what you gave us is far more valuable. We have smiths and good forges. We can make weapons. I’m quite good at forging; I learned it from my father."
"I’ll study here to help you increase the purity of your weapons."
Ren smiled, trying to shake off the thought of why her uncle had given her such a rare jewel and where he had gotten it when he hated the Fae so much.
"But we need to test it."
Ren was bothered to say that, but it was the truth. She couldn’t just give them hope and pray it would work. The best way to avoid any lethal outcome was to test it after making the weapons.
"So you mean we need a vampire?"
Ren swallowed and nodded. "Just a pesky one who can’t turn others. Also, you must make sure no one gets bitten. In our studies, we realized the soldiers who got dangerously bitten then died of fever or infection. The hallucinations were the painful part, as though they were burning in hell and could see things we couldn’t."
Ren explained it. For now, she just trusted him—the only person who had seen her intentions and saved her instead of attempting to kill her or throw her out when his lover didn’t appreciate having her around.
"Alright, Doe-eye! I’ll bring you one. But we need Agara here. I’ll have to get him to help me."
Ren smiled. "Please stay for the feast."
"I’ll leave after that."
That meant he was going to the Iceland realm in the coming nights. She would be alone here.
She continued reading the Chapter and didn’t realize he was just peering at her the entire time, praising her talent. She was indeed intelligent and hard to forget.
As she finished, he pointed to the messy library. "Do you think you can fix this horrible mess?"
"Yes, I can. You have a lot more books than our library back in Zillgaira. I wish I had so much time to read them all."
They began to leave when she saw a wooden tag above one of the shelves: "The Fae History!"
You’ve got to be kidding! She couldn’t believe her eyes. These precious books could give her a lot of information about her husband’s bloodline and answer tons of questions that she didn’t want to ask him, assuming it would be rude to cross the limits.
"Alright then, this is your first task as the Lady of Vine Castle."
Ren blushed. "I won’t disappoint you."
Kai chuckled. "No, you won’t."
Gloria followed them out, but as soon as they reached the door, she said, "My lady, it is late already. Can I leave?"
"Yes, Gloria. I’ll accompany my wife!" Kai answered instead and dismissed her.
"Good night, Gloria. I’ll teach you the alphabet tomorrow. Get ready."
With a wide smile, Gloria spun on her heel and left.
"I can’t believe you," he noted as he held his arm out for her to grab.
Ren eagerly clasped his arm and walked with him. "Having uneducated servants is far more dangerous than having educated ones, Your Majesty."
"You are reasonable. I like that."

When Ren changed her dress and walked to the bedroom, Kai was already on the bed, the same as last night—shirtless.
She held her courage in her palm, resisting the urge to steal glances, and kept forgetting that he could hear her raw thoughts, ready to tease her with them.
"I am your husband. I never said you can’t look at me. We just can’t have babies. I can even release you if you’re aroused."
He spoke so revealingly, annoyingly, and nastily! Her shoulders tensed while standing by the bed, and her legs lost sensation. Her face was entirely red.
"What are you talking about?"
He moved his arm away from his forehead and chuckled. "I know what’s been happening to your body since I marked you!"
Oh, a good point. She was ready to confront him about that matter since everyone was talking about the mark’s impact. Yet, she knew so little about it and had just discovered that he could wander in her mind and loot her privacy. How nice and considerate of him!
She lifted her forefinger at him, "Tell me, what are the impacts of the mark?" Then pointed at the hollow of her neck where he had bitten, her face dangerously, yet sweetly to him, angry.
