Chapter 25: A white crow

Close to the castle’s secret gateway, Kai slowed Viva. This little human was distressed, and it could unleash the storm inside her at any moment. But he couldn’t deny that King Benkin had known something about his elder niece and had sent her here, forging an alliance with him. There was no rush to find out what was on his mind, as they would soon reunite on the battlefield. Kai couldn’t wait to see his face when he realized his wife could tame dragons and griffins simultaneously, meaning she possessed the power of fire and water at the same time—two strong, essential elements of life.

"Speak to me. I can already hear your chaotic, disarranged thoughts."

Ren snapped out of her daze to find him bent close to her ear, his warm breath brushing against her skin, tickling her.

"He didn’t say that he would teach me how to control my power, let alone use it."

"Hmm, I understand your worries. But he didn’t leave because he didn’t want to teach you. He had to check the library in Rezgaith, the capital of the Fae realm. You are an exception, and teaching you the wrong way might hurt you. He had to educate himself first. I’m certain he will come back soon."

Ren clenched her skirt, pursing her lips. "Is my magic good or bad? He didn’t say a word."

Kai let out a frustrated sigh, stopped Viva near a spring, and dismounted. Stretching his arms, he grabbed her by the waist and put her down.

"Come on, let’s sit there until you calm down." He led her to a flat stone, and she sat while he leaned against a tree trunk in front of her, folding his arms against his chest, looking at the moon’s reflection in the spring’s puddle of clean water. Ren brushed her delicate fingers on the surface and smiled as the moon’s reflection rippled.

"Thank you for the emotional support. It feels good." She spoke after a long silence.

Kai chuckled. "What is that?"

Ren arched a brow at him. "You don’t know what emotional support is?"

He shrugged. "No, I’ve never received any. If you don’t mean bedding someone is included in this emotional support."

Ren was baffled to hear that. Was it serious? By the way, the last part stung! She was jealous of the women he took to his bed and kissed. Of course, that lucky ass, Elaika!

She gaped, "Oh, can you please not make it sexual!"

"Okay, go ahead. Tell me more about what is going on in your little head, Doe-eye." He peered into her beautiful, glowing blue eyes that shimmered like the twinkling stars above.

"I keep worrying after the attack. They called me a witch. It’s embarrassing, offensive!" Her voice grew a bit louder as she pouted. Kai wondered if she had ever been angry or shouted. Even in this unstable condition, her expression remained calm yet vulnerable, making him want to hug her. He had never felt like this, not for decades.

"It’s a fact that this world is made of light and darkness that are competing to win and take over everything. But can you tell me who decides what is good or bad?"

Ren shrugged. "We do!"

He tilted his head. "You know the answer, then. I can see the light within you, but do you know what controls chaos?"

Ren gave it some thought. All she had ever wanted was balance—a life that had different shades waiting for her to explore.

"Balance! But I feel like my life is on the edge. I feel so unhinged, breakable."

"That’s normal, Princess! If you weren’t scared, I would have said you were insane, or it would have frightened me to leave you here and go for the war. But you think about saving others, not taking their lives. As for taming dragons and griffins—did you know that those who tame dragons have the power of fire, while those who tame griffins have the power of water? You possess both, which means you have the potential to cause a storm."

Ren felt a chill creeping down her spine, "You mean in the Fae realm the one who tames dragons can’t tame Griffins?"

He nodded in approval.

’With great power comes great responsibility,’ she thought, and Kai smiled.

"Exactly!"

"You heard me!" She grimaced. "How long have you been in my head, intruding on my privacy?" she objected.

"Hmm, I’m not going to say. That’s my secret. I have my powers." He teased her, his tone casual.

"Block it, please!" She begged.

"I can’t! That’s the mark’s impact. You should learn to block it, but I want you to control it instead because I need to sense you when you’re in danger. With powers, there will be more people aiming at you."

She sighed, shaking her head. "How am I supposed to control it when I don’t even know what it is?"

He dropped his arms to his sides and walked toward her. Standing close, he lifted her chin, his mesmerizing eyes pointing toward Viva. "I’ll teach you later. You must be hungry; we didn’t have lunch. Are you feeling better now?"

Ren nodded, and he dropped his hand. She stood up, and they strode to the mare.

"I haven’t given you a wedding gift," he mentioned.

"You don’t have to. Either way, this isn’t a real marriage. You remember?"

Kai lifted her onto the saddle. "I can gift you whenever I want, Princess!" He gave her a sinfully attractive smirk as he jumped up.

Arriving at the castle, Ren noticed the heated resort in the courtyard. They were preparing for the feast.

"Was this necessary?" She growled.

"Don’t be mad at me, Princess, but you have to meet the clans’ elders. Yes, this feast is necessary for political subjects."

"Even if I scare people with my strong magic, I still have a weak body. No one will count on me or take me seriously." She glanced at the strong, curvy figures of the females in his pack.

"Ah, well, I guess I can help with that as long as I’m here." Kai rode to the stable, seeing Rail and Axe standing there.

"What is it?" he asked as he dismounted.

Axe brought up a small scroll in his hand. "We have a message from the front line. The white crow has arrived now." His eyes flicked to Reneira as though it was a confidential matter she shouldn’t hear.

"I’ll see you inside. Thank you for escorting us, Gamma Axe, Rail." Ren grasped the point quickly and walked off before they could reply so they could talk freely.

"Your Highness, our informant found the vampire’s name." Axe’s voice was agitated.

Kai narrowed his eyes. "The one calling himself the Vampire King?"

"Yes. See for yourself. You’ll be shocked."

Kai grabbed the scroll and unrolled it. His eyes flared with an outraged fire. "Luther!" he gritted through his teeth.

"He’s alive!" Rail noted, concern clouding his face.
