Chapter 24: Three shades of magic

Chapter 24: Three shades of magic

Despite everything that had transpired recently, Ren couldn’t deny the sense of security her husband radiated. It was a dominating presence, one she trusted instinctively, even before fully understanding when it had begun.

As their feet hit the last step, Ren exhaled sharply. The air was cold, but the sight before her was breathtaking. The temple yard was veiled under a delicate blanket of snow. Carved stone pillars flanked the path ahead, leading to the grand building. But it was the statues of gods that made her stop in her tracks. Ancient and imposing, they were the old Fae gods, beings from an age far before human history. Her eyes were drawn to the one with dragon wings, and she stood frozen, mesmerized.

Kai’s voice broke through her trance, his brows furrowed. "We should go inside, and stop staring at these cursed statues."

She barely registered his words, still staring at the statue. It had a strange, powerful allure. But when she noticed the change in his expression, she nodded, snapping herself back to the present. She hurried to catch up with his long strides.

They neared the massive wooden door, and suddenly Kai’s voice boomed, irritated. "Open the damn door, Agara. It’s freezing out here for her."

The door groaned, its sound echoing like a warning through the cold air.

Ren shot Kai a warning glance. "Be nice to him. I’m fine." She hid the small shiver in her hands, trying not to let him pick a fight with the only one who could help her.

"I am being nice," Kai growled under his breath, though the sound sent a tremor down her spine. Was that really his version of ’nice’?

The door creaked open, releasing a rush of warmth that instantly shrouded her. Ren let out a quiet sigh, her body finally easing into the comfort she’d longed for.

From the shadows, an old man emerged, his robes flowing with a quiet authority. His presence was steady, and measured, but as his gaze landed on Ren, her breath caught in her throat. His eye, a deep, unsettling red, bore through her like a blade.

"Long time no see, Your Highness!" His voice was warm, but something about the way his eyes flickered at Ren made her skin crawl. A sly smirk tugged at the corners of his mouth. What was he?

"Princess Reneira," he continued, his gaze heavy, "You are blessed with a prosperous power."

Ren swallowed, the words sending a cold chill through her. It was as if he could see straight into her soul.

"Thank you," she managed, forcing her voice to remain steady.

Kai stepped forward, clearly eager to move things along. "Wife, this is Saint Saga, he is the owl of Veil Valley and the monk of this temple."

Ren forced a smile and nodded. "It’s a pleasure to meet you, Saint Saga."

"The pleasure is mine, Princess," he replied smoothly, leading them into the heart of the temple. "Please follow me."

They walked through an enormous hall that stretched endlessly. The only thing in the center was a circular platform. Ren’s eyes scanned the room, but what stood out the most was the light; it wasn’t coming from the candles as expected, but from a magical white globe that hovered near Agara. The energy radiating from it was almost palpable. How far did Agara’s magic reach?

Agara’s voice broke the train of her thoughts. "I appreciate your help. Now, you may leave." His tone was polite but firm.

As the monk disappeared into the shadows, Ren glanced at Kai, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Was he going to transform into an owl?"

Kai’s expression remained impassive. "Yes, a white owl." He said it like it was the most normal thing in the world, leaving Ren to feel a bit... out of place. But she said nothing, instead turning her attention back to Agara.

"Sit down," Agara instructed, pointing to the circular platform. It was a tight fit, with only enough space for two. Ren sat, crossing her legs as Agara took his place opposite her, settling into a meditative posture.

"Place your right palm in front of me," he said, his voice firm.

Ren obeyed, her palm trembling slightly as she extended it.

"Now, your left hand on your left knee. Forearm up. Extend your forefinger and middle finger, and then rest your thumb on your little finger."

Ren followed, but Agara’s sharp gaze corrected her movements, making her self-conscious.

Then, a voice rang in her head. Don’t be afraid. I’m right here to support you. It was Kai’s voice, warm and grounding, and it eased the tension in her chest.

"Close your eyes," Agara instructed. "And follow my voice. No distractions."

Kai raised his hands in mock surrender, stepping back. "I won’t interrupt."

Agara’s voice lowered to a near whisper. "All magical forces have a core within the beares. When they stir, they will call to the master. If we resist, it will drive us insane. It will claw at you until you lose control." His voice darkened. "If your mind is unstable, the magic will unleash itself, and cause chaos."

Ren’s heart was hammering hard against her ribcage. She had been feeling that ever since the power first surfaced, an overwhelming force pushing against her will. A force that knew her fears, thrived on them. But she fought it every day, building walls to keep it contained.

"Do you feel it?" Agara’s voice broke through her thoughts.

"I do," she whispered, her heart racing as the heat inside her surged.

"Good. The core is not agitated. Now, slowly open the pores in the barrier you’ve built. Accept it. Embrace it. It is a part of you, not your enemy. It wants to protect you."

The warmth in her veins intensified, and Ren clenched her jaw against the sharp pain that poured through her. The magic fought her, struggling to break free. She gasped, her body trembling as she slowly created the first pore in the barrier.

"Keep your mind clear," Agara continued. "Don’t let fear feed it."

Sweat beaded on Ren’s brow as the magic roared within her. The energy was wild, chaotic, nefarious, and furious. But Ren held firm. She had fought too hard to lose control now. Slowly, the power began to quiet, like a storm forced to heel.

"Good. You learn quickly," Agara said. "Now, open your eyes."

Ren blinked, her vision hazy at first. But when the world came into focus, she gasped. Three rays of light burst from her body, cutting through the air. The first two were bright—pure white and soft green, but the third... it was dark. Nearly black. A shiver ran down her spine as she stared at the dark ray, a heavy weight pressing into her chest.

Agara’s frown deepened. He leaned closer, his eyes narrowing. "The white ray is for healers," he muttered, his voice tight. "Have you ever tamed a wild animal?"

Ren blinked in confusion. "Yes... only Viva. Is that bad?"

Agara’s frown eased, but only slightly. "The green ray belongs to those who tame animals."

Ren’s mind raced. She had never thought of herself as someone who could tame an animal, umm, except for Viva. But then her eyes fell on the third ray again, and a knot of dread twisted in her stomach. "What about the dark one?"

Agara’s gaze softened, though there was a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. "Princess, are you certain you don’t have Fae blood?"

Ren’s throat tightened. "Yes... my parents were human."

A slow realization seemed to dawn on Agara, but he said nothing. He only whispered, "I know of only one person with a black ray of magic." A hint of sorrow painted his face.

Ren’s pulse quickened. "Is that... bad?"

Before Agara could answer, Kai’s voice cut through the tension. "It depends on how you use it." His eyes softened as he regarded her. "The black ray is for taming dragons and griffins."

Dragons? Griffins? Ren’s heart skipped a beat. She couldn’t help herself, laughter burst from her, loud and uncontrollable. The rays flickered out, disappearing into the air.

Kai’s voice was quiet but certain. "No one has ever possessed three rays of magic. It means you have three unique abilities; abilities that will be wasted if you let fear control you or block it."

Ren’s laughter died in her throat as the weight of his words settled over her. Three abilities. Three powers. And they were all hers to control, or to lose. She was screwed. How was she going to control them without losing the reign of her power? A Thousand questions swirled in her mind, pulling at her harshly.

"Are you going to teach me how to keep them in control without losing my mind?"

She was very nervous, and couldn’t wait to hear his answer when Kai’s fingers squeezed her shoulder gently, "Relax, doe-eye! He needs time to figure out a solution for this. Just don’t panic. It seems we all underestimated you." A heartbreaking smile appeared on his lips, making Ren just peer at his lips.
