The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride -
Chapter 174: Stupid boy!
Chapter 174: Stupid boy!
"Did Araben... cut her hand off at the wrist?" The King asked, his voice betraying a mixture of disbelief and anger. He had never tolerated nobles who abused their power in such a horrific way.
Ren nodded grimly. "There are things you must know."
Turning to Madame Helene, Ren asked her to elucidate everything from the beginning. The woman didn’t miss a single detail. The sorrow of losing her girls in those flames was so heavy.
By the time she finished, the King was silent for a moment, absorbing the weight of the revelations. Then he turned to Ren. "And those assassins... did you find anything unusual about them?"
Ren’s expression was as hard as a rock. "Yes. We kept one alive for interrogation, but he swallowed a poisoned tooth and died before we could learn anything useful. I was busy healing lady Helene and couldn’t buy time."
The King’s fierce eyes darted to Kai, who remained unfazed. Killing themselves with poison! How familiar! He couldn’t say they were loyal but certainly died for gold coins. Not any purpose was behind it.
"I guess we now know that House Kalia is after more than just defeating the vampires," Aunt Eve spoke up, her voice was weary but firm.
The King sighed, guilt evident on his face. "My brother told me about the engagement. I agreed, but I had no idea what was really going on." His tone shifted, filled with self-reproach. "I blame myself for letting everything go unnoticed. I was so proud that neither realm dared to challenge the Ruby Throne."
Kai’s voice cut through the tension. "How many people died?"
"More than fifty," Aunt Eve answered, her voice breaking with the weight of the loss. "The auditor was lucky. He was outside arguing with a customer when the building exploded."
"I’ll make her pay, Lady Helene, Araben will pay for this," the King vowed, his voice steely with resolve.
The woman shook her head, her hands trembling slightly. "Please... save Josa. She’s been through enough already. She doesn’t know her family was murdered. I couldn’t bear to tell her. She thinks they abandoned her after she was sold to that brothel."
Kai’s gaze shifted to Ren, waiting for her plan. Ah, so his wife was trying to save that maiden. "Where is the maiden now?"
"She’s in the castle," Aunt Eve answered. "Lora has seen her. She’ll help us. All we need is to get Ren out of this fortress for a few hours."
Ren’s voice was calm but decisive. "How about gathering all the noble ladies in the garden gazebo? They’re all curious about my marriage. They won’t refuse."
The plan was set. Everyone agreed with Ren’s idea. However, Kai’s lips twitched slightly. He didn’t like the idea, but he couldn’t bring himself to oppose it. Look how hard she was attempting to save the girl.
"Then what happens?" The King asked, clearly enjoying the game, a mean grin spreading across his face as he looked at Kai.
Ren’s eyes sparkled with mischief. "I’ll tell the truth to those ladies. I’ll say I’m so in love with my evil husband that I would die without him. And the rest? It’s a secret. They must think Kaisun holds a harem!"
Kai snorted in disgust, rolling his eyes. "I do not have a harem. A male like me can only be pleased by his mate’s scent."
Even Shadow seemed to loathe the idea. That girl better get lucky if she wasn’t killed in the process. Shadow would rather stay by his mate’s side, not deal with a terrified, flinching woman, even if it was part of a trap.
Ren’s tone grew cold, her confidence unwavering. "I know you don’t. Araben would try to kill me with her own hands. This is my only chance to cast her out."
"If she touches you, I’ll burn House Kalia to the ground," Kai growled through clenched teeth.
The King cleared his throat, realizing the two had momentarily forgotten their manners. Still, he couldn’t help but feel a surge of satisfaction. His daughter truly loved Kaisun. Perhaps Anarya had been right after all, a sane woman could fall for him, especially if his darker side was tempered and tamed. Only Ren could do that. This demon, in the end, had found his freedom. His patience had paid off. All men should envy him for having a wife like Ren.

Later...
Kai talked to the King about letting Gloria inherit the Throne and the King surprisingly agreed without argument. Kai could guess why but didn’t ask. This King had made a deal with The Fae King. That man wouldn’t want his granddaughter to be involved in human politics and die like his daughter.
The King of Alvonia invited Prince Dankin and his father, Lord Alekin, to a private dining room for breakfast. He found Ren’s plan to be too soft. While she had been tempted to cast Araben out, the King couldn’t afford to take that risk. He wouldn’t let Araben breathe the air and turn it into another death plot against his daughter.
On the other hand, Dankin was the epitome of pride and luxury in front of others, but in the King’s presence, he turned into a meek, pliable figure, a humble cotton. Trying to attract his favor.
"How have you been, son?" The King’s voice was smooth, almost mocking.
Dankin basked in the title, loving to hear himself called "son" by the King, though he knew better than to be misled by the mockery.
"I’ve been very busy studying and training to become what this court deserves," he replied, his voice laced with self-importance.
The King casually picked up his juice goblet, sipping from it before playfully swirling it in his hand, his eyes following its movement as if reading something in the liquid. "Who told you that this court ever needed you?" he asked, his tone shaded with quiet contempt.
Lord Alekin, caught off guard, choked on his food, unable to hide his discomfort.
"Please... forgive this naïve son of mine, brother," Lord Alekin stuttered, his voice strained.
Dankin paled, immediately regretting his words. He knew the King despised flattery, but what he’d just said wasn’t even that, it was a blatant misstep. Maybe he didn’t want Dan to have a political position. Hell, no!
