The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride -
Chapter 173: Casting her out.
Chapter 173: Casting her out.
The night stretched on, the quiet punctuated only by their checks on Helene. Slowly, her fever began to break, and Ren, exhausted, finally went to her chambers for some much-needed rest.
When morning came, the rain pattered softly against the window. Kai entered the room to find Ren already awake, her eyes sharp and alert despite the exhaustion lingering in her features.
"Morning, wife!" Kai greeted, tilting his head when he noticed her grim expression. Was she upset with him?
"Good morning. Please, come here and sit down. I need you to do something." Ren’s tone was commanding and serious.
Kai nodded, stepping closer. He dragged a chair out and sat, tapping his lap with a mischievous grin. "You here?"
Ren gave a bitter smile, then sat on his lap, reaching up to smooth his messy hair.
"Wife, now I hear you. What made my woman so upset?"
He picked up the glass of water and took one sip.
"You must act like a nasty husband and bed a girl."
Water spurted out of his mouth, almost choked on it, coughing violently. Ren gently tapped his back to help him catch his breath. She couldn’t be serious, testing him?
"What are you saying? There is no way I can do that!" His face turned red with anger and shock.
"Gods, I just need you to pretend!" she said with exasperation.
Kai took a deep breath, sighing as he wiped his mouth. "Wife, you’re scarier than demon concubines. Why are you suddenly asking for this?"
Ren pursed her lips, her gaze sharp. "Do you have any?"
Kai rolled his eyes with a dramatic flourish. "Of course I don’t. You’re enough. Having a smart wife is already too much for my heart. Answer me. Why do you ask?"
Ren’s eyes darkened with sorrow. "She murdered countless people last night, just so you’d be with a whore."
"Who?"
"Araben."
Kai frowned, his expression mixed with confusion and concern. "Is that really so terrible? Why didn’t you ask Azrael to take her soul? He’d gladly do it for my father. Araben’s soul is dark and can feed hellhounds."
Ren shook her head, her voice sounding in pain but resolute. "I want her to suffer. I want her to feel the pain she’s caused, ten times worse. And Shadow is the only one who can help me make that happen."
Kai paused, considering it. Then he nodded slowly. "You want her to believe she’s won, that her plan has succeeded, then crush her beneath the weight of her own victory. Clever. A true daughter of King Benkin. But, why don’t you tell the King to punish her?"
"I will tell him." Ren’s gaze hardened. "And you, Kai, will help me make Gloria the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. We already have a throne to rule. Thegara needs us and merging it with human territories means letting them dotting around its wealth."
Kai’s mouth dropped open, surprise flooding his features. His heart swelled with unexpected relief and joy. The thought of ruling humans had never appealed to him, but now... now there was no struggle. He was already a King in his own right, an heir to his father’s throne. Alvonia, however, would bring nothing but chaos. This... this was a future worth fighting for.
"Tell me everything. I’ll do everything I can."
Ren let out a long, measured sigh. "We need to go to Gloria’s chamber. I need you to bring the King there. Convince him to accept my offer or even force him if you have to."
Kai didn’t question her. He trusted Ren’s certainty, she always knew what she was doing.
"I’ll see you there." He planted a gentle kiss on her lips, then stood and stepped into the shadows, vanishing from sight.
Appearing in the King’s chamber without permission was a bold move, but Kai didn’t care, he was used to it. The King would understand, or he wouldn’t.
"Gods, why are you barging into my room like this?" the King’s voice cut through the air, laced with irritation. "You’re tearing down my privacy!"
The King stood half-naked, just having stepped out of the bath, water still dripping from his hair.
"Get dressed," Kai ordered, not a hint of politeness in his tone. "I need to take you somewhere, secretly."
"Why?"
"My Queen’s order!"
The King was amazed at how Reneira could tame his demon! He liked it, to be honest. His daughter was formidable beneath her soft skin.
The King rubbed the bridge of his nose, clearly annoyed, then ran a hand through his damp hair. "Anything from the docks? Did you catch any pirates?"
Kai shook his head, his expression grim. "We caught a few pirates visiting smugglers. They killed themselves. Poison in their teeth."
The King’s frown deepened, his mind clearly racing. He hurriedly donned a golden robe, the fine fabric shimmering in the light. "This confirms it. The sorcerers are interfering in this war. They’re breaching the treaty."
"No, they’re not," Kai corrected, his voice flat. "They’ve traded with your people, with criminals, but they’ve never crossed into your territory, or at least, you haven’t caught them doing so. But now... your niece is causing trouble. She killed many people last night."
Without waiting for a response, Kai shaped a portal from the shadows of the room. The King, his shock evident but his resolve firming up followed without hesitation. Araben was a true snake, no doubt! But why would she kill so many people?
Moments later, they stood in the middle of the living room of Gloria’s chamber. Aunt Eve had cried so much that her eyes were swollen, a deep red.
"Eve, why are you crying?" The King asked gently, extending his arm and wiping her tears away with his thumb. He pulled her into a comforting embrace. "Oh, my little sister. What happened?"
The lump in Eve’s throat was too large for her to speak, her grief choking her words.
From the bedroom, Ren emerged, helping Madame Helene out.
The King’s gaze immediately fixed on the woman. He knew her. His eyes fell to her wrist, where the brutal wound was still fresh. He let go of his sister.
"Your Highness! Sorry, if I could not come on my own." Madame Helene started. It was a shame that the King was brought up to hear her.
