The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride
Chapter 133: Expecting unbearable looks.

Chapter 133: Expecting unbearable looks.

"Neither of them hurt me," she declared, her voice sure but soft. "If anything... It brought me peace. Knowing my mother was aware of the truth, and that my father hadn’t kept it from her, it quieted something inside me. Despite his dark, cruel nature... she loved him. And she changed him more than anyone else ever could. Their reasons for hiding me were rooted in protection. That much, I understand. But, he didn’t even bother to demand a meeting after revealing the truth to you. He could’ve at least explained..."

Her eyes dimmed slightly, the peace-giving way to a flicker of pain. "But there’s still something that weighs on me..."

Kai instinctively wrapped his arms tighter around her, pressing her head gently to his chest. His chin rested on her crown, "Tell me," he urged, his voice low and protective.

"My cousin," she whispered. "The girl who was born that same night... is she truly dead? No one searched for her. No one cared what became of her. They sacrificed her, because of me. And I... I can’t stop feeling guilty."

"You can ask Azrael to find her," Kai said gently. "A drop of your uncle’s blood would be enough. He can track her, among both the living and the dead."

Ren’s eyes widened. "He’s that powerful?"

Kai nodded, his gaze thoughtful. "He chose to become a Saint rather than serve as my father’s reaper. That decision alone speaks volumes. He holds enough power to rival the King of the underworld himself."

A chill traced her spine. Azrael... born of two saints, brother to the Fae crown prince. One brother had chosen the material realm of the Fae, and Azrael had chosen to ascend. Could he one day become a god? A god of death?

Her thoughts spiraled until Kai’s voice sliced through them like a blade.

"Reneira." He said her name with quiet gravity, and her heart tripped in response.

"Yes?" she blinked, startled.

"I want to read your mother’s letter. But without your permission, the words won’t appear for me. That’s the law of secret runes."

Ren’s lips parted. So it was the same as Nimoieth’s diary... only visible to the one it was meant for.

"I allow you to read my mother’s letter," she said quietly.

Kai gave her a soft smile before reaching for the scroll. He read in silence, and when he finally lowered them, his jaw clenched, a shadow of sorrow flickering across his features. He didn’t let it spill. He swallowed it, for her.

"After the war," he murmured, "I’ll take you to my uncle. But... the Fae realm isn’t exactly welcoming to hybrids."

He didn’t elaborate further. And Ren understood some truths were best discovered in their own time.

"All right," Ren said, lifting her brow, "but before we go to breakfast, promise me you won’t poison Shadow again!"

"Yes, you reckless bastard!" Shadow snarled from within, his voice laced with indignation. "Promise her! You drained a massive chunk of my dragon power with that damn poison. Now I can’t even face Lutherieth at full strength."

Shadow was still seething. He had every intention of devouring Luther and dragging his cursed soul straight to his father’s court, and now, thanks to Kai, he felt unarmed.

Kai snorted. "Fine. I promise." He leaned forward, brushing a kiss against her chin.

"Azrael told you, didn’t he?"

Ren nodded, her lips twitching. "He said I’m tormenting you."

Kai threw his head back in laughter. Loud, unrestrained. Gods, he couldn’t even argue, Azrael’s blunt mouth always had a way of hitting the mark.

Ren pouted, "Why are you laughing?"

"You little wife! Was it the reason you let me claim you?"

Ren rolled her eyes, blushing, "No..." she paused, weighing her words to see if it was good to say it or not.

"No?!" He purred, seemingly too entertained to hear the rest.

"I asked you because I wanted to!" She was burning again. And this time, it was certainly his fault.

Pressing his lips on hers, Kai devoured her again until a knock on the door hurled him out of the joy.

"Yes, Siamon?" Kai was cursing under his breath.

"Your Highness, everyone is waiting for you and our Luna. Shall we expect you to come?"

Kai cleared his throat. Since when was his butler mean? Expecting him to come? What was it?

Ren stood up and steadied herself, stretching her arm and waiting for him to stand up. He might get horny at any moment and refuse to go. Her husband was unpredictable and needed a little push.

He sighed and got to his feet, Ren’s expression was already saying that she was eager to go right now, and he couldn’t object to that. They could wait a little longer and kiss but...

Holding her hand, they sauntered out of the chamber, and he shot a grave glare at Siamon.

"Have I ever told you that I wouldn’t attend so you decided to come and make sure of it?" Kai questioned.

Siamon faintly smirked, sheepishly, "Well, considering last night..."

Kai interrupted him with a cough, signaling to him, he better shut his mouth. Ren’s grip around his hand tightened, she was being shy.

"Let us join the others and stop saying nonsense."

Ren bit her lower lip, the nightmare would begin soon. The elders were shameless enough to indicate what they had done last night so everyone expected an heir soon.

Even the thought made her back sweat! At the end of the corridor, she searched to see Arkilla, but she was nowhere to be found. Her company was essential in the dining hall where she needed to link her mind with her, seeking help from her.

Instead, Gloria appeared gracefully with a wide smile as Ren imagined and bowed before them, then walked behind them.

"Are the generals in the hall?" Kai asked Siamon.

"Yes, all of them." Kai felt a bit uncomfortable. Why would this occur exactly when everyone was in the castle, and they were mourning? He was not embarrassed of taking his wife which was his natural right but despising those expecting looks he would soon encounter, that might lead the crucial conversation into another path.
