Chapter 89: Don’t turn away the blessings
Chapter 89: Don’t turn away the blessings
Another day later...
"Hi, Fil."
"Hey, Fil."
"Fil."
Receiving greetings and attention in the company was something Fil came to terms with. Although the attention slightly decreased after a few days since her ’glow up,’ people would still greet her. But today was different.
It felt like she went back to the first time she came to work after her makeover. Everyone would just greet her and they weren’t even being discreet about it. Especially, male employees would strike up casual conversations with her.
Fil had a suspicion, though.
"Good morning, Fil!" Elise greeted, turning to the desk beside her with a smile. "How’s the —"
Elise almost bit her tongue as soon as she saw the suspicious look from Fil. "Uh... why are you looking at me like that, Fil?"
"It was you, right?" Fil hummed, crossing her arms under her chest. "You told everyone that I’m single."
"What?!" Elise gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. She wanted to deny it, but Fil squinted her eyes more. "Ahem!"
"Elise."
"Well, I think I kinda mentioned it to Liv." Elise scratched the side of her neck.
"You mentioned it to Liv?" Fil arched a brow. "Are you saying Liv told someone else?"
"No?" Elise cleared her throat once again as she carefully continued. "I told her about it in the elevator and on our way out yesterday. I just realized I might’ve spoken quite loudly."
She pouted. "Sorry?"
"You’re not sorry." Fil shook her head as she sat down. "Why did you do it?"
Elise fiddled with her fingers, peeking at Fil just to see if Fil truly wanted to know the reason. When Fil’s expression didn’t change, she let out a deep exhale.
"Fine." Elise threw her hands in the air. "I purposely let others hear it, knowing gossip in this place spread faster than a plague."
"Why?"
"Because... I feel like I should do something." She frowned, sporting her puppy eyes. "The rumor, the breakup... they frustrate me."
Fil raised her brows, watching Elise sigh for the second time as she continued.
"You said you’re fine, but that’s impossible. Twenty years of devotion... isn’t a joke. That’s twenty years of your life, Fil," Elise clarified. "Even if you’re the one who dumped him, I know you have a very deep reason for it."
"So, your solution is to advertise my current status for everyone to hear?"
"Everyone here is bound by the company contract. The best they could do is carry your stuff with you or maybe leave some flowers or chocolates or letters on your desk." Elise shrugged. "They won’t harass you because, by that, they would be breaching the company rules."
"Oh, Elise." Fil leaned back and sighed.
"I’m sorry." Elise pouted. "It’s a mistake. I was too emotional that I wasn’t thinking straight."
Fil sighed for the second time while shaking her head.
"But, Fil, I know you just got out of a long-term relationship. I swear I’m not trying to offend you or anything, but you’re almost in your 30s," Elise awkwardly broached, observing Fil’s reaction to her first statement. "You know, I’m just thinking. There’s no harm if you start dating again."
"Dating and being in a relationship are two different things. It’s never too late to..."
"To?" Fil tilted her head to the side. "To what, Elise?"
"To experiment?" Elise blinked innocently. "Who knows, right? You might like someone in the company. If you don’t like anyone here, then that’s okay. You’re single and free! Might as well enjoy it!"
Fil shook her head while staring at the enthusiastic Elise. She wanted to scold the latter but didn’t.
"I know you did it with good intentions," said Fil with another deep sigh. "But keep in mind that I tell you some things because I trust you, Elise. Not everything I say is meant for other people’s ears to hear."
"Sorry." Elise pressed her lips into a thin line, feeling a little guilty. "I won’t do it again."
"I know you won’t." Fil smiled, nodding. "Don’t worry about it. I’ll let this pass."
"Fil." Elise moved closer. "I’m really sorry."
"I know."
"I’ll buy you lunch!"
"No need." Fil looked Elise dead in the eyes. "What’s the point of letting everyone know I’m single when we can’t enjoy it?"
"Huh?"
Fil grinned from ear to ear. "A certain master told me don’t turn away the blessings. Now, back to work. We have another meeting with the Solana representatives at ten."
Elise squinted her eyes, confused at Fil’s remarks. However, she didn’t dwell on it, as they had spent the first ten minutes of their office hours chatting. Only after the busy morning did Elise realize what Fil meant by not turning away the blessing.
Because the moment Fil reached the cafeteria, several male employees approached them. Some offered to get her lunch, others already got her lunch for her. There were a few who gave her some take-outs. Before they knew it, Fil and Elise were already having a feast!

"This is delicious." Elise enjoyed the box of egg tarts while working on the design, giggling happily. "Fil, want some?"
Fil didn’t respond, making Elise turn her head in Fil’s cubicle. When she saw Fil cleaning up her desk, she furrowed her brows.
"You’re leaving?" asked Elise. "Isn’t it too early?"
"Early?" Fil furrowed her brows, jerking her chin for Elise to check the time. The second Elise saw the time, she nearly choked on the egg tart she was eating.
"What?!"
FIl chuckled. "I’m leaving now. Make sure to clean your desk before you go."
With that being said, Fil walked away from her cubicle. As she did so, she couldn’t help but shake her head mildly. Elise enjoyed the snacks while working, to the point she didn’t even notice it was time to go home.
On her way to the lobby, Fil intuitively checked her message logs. She clicked her message log with Anton, which was short without any opening for conversations.
[From: Anton
Hi, Fil! Remember that offer I told you about during Marcus’s party? I know you’ll be busy, but I just want to ask if you can still do it. You don’t have to if you really can’t. Just testing my luck. Who knows, right? xD]
[To: Anton
Sure.]
[From: Anton
Great!]
That was all the exchange they had. Fil squinted her eyes, treading carefully in the lobby with her attention on her phone.
’Should I send him a message?’ she wondered. ’But I don’t want him to think he’s doing me a favor instead.’
"Never mind." She shook her head and put her phone back into her purse, only to realize some employees flocking outside the building. "What’s going on?"
When Fil squeezed herself out of the crowd and out of the building, the first thing she was a flashy orange sports car and a handsome man leaning against it.
